The 2015 season starts sadly with the loss of our Golf Professional of 8
years, Greg Mason. He and his family are pursuing an opportunity that
he could not turn down. We thank him for his years of service and wish
him luck in the future. We have gained Jordan David to manage the Pro
Shop for 2015. Jordan was Greg’s “right hand man” and comes to the
position with lots of energy. Give Jordan a “Waverly Welcome” when
you see him in the Pro Shop. Greenskeepers Dennis Jones and Eric
Schares are continuing the fantastic effort on the course..
Other news:
--We have again scheduled a pond rehabilitation project for the 5 north
ponds. We received additional funding during the City Budget Process
so we are hopeful that a quality project can be completed. The main part
of the project is to excavate the ponds to deepen and remove the silt
and other materials. The excess material will be placed at strategic
locations on the course so costs for hauling will be minimal. This will
start with dewatering the ponds in August with the work done over the
fall of 2015. There will be some grow in and cleanup in 2016.
--If funding remains, we want to purchase new devices to introduce
oxygen into the pond water, keeping the water less turbid. And if grant
funding can be obtained, a Denitrification Bioreactor is planned to be
installed on the west side of the railroad tracks to naturally remove the
nitrogen and solids coming from the runoff water from the west and
south.
--You may notice the hill on #1 front tee has been filled in. We lowered
and reshaped a mound in the Park System and placed the spoils in the
hollow of the hill. We wanted to reduce the slope of the hill for safer
sledding. Staff will seed it with rye and prairie this spring. It will be a
while before it is established again as a no mow but it will be easier to
find your golf balls.
--Keep on checking the website. It is very interactive and there are
videos from the maintenance staff as well as “how to” instructional
videos from the Greg. I really like the self-assessment tools and tips
available.
--Foot Golf is still in the works. The game will be put on hold this year
and targeted for 2016.
--Tri-Golf instructional program has been used this past year and will be
offered as an additional activity with Pool Parties or by itself. We will
have Pro Shop Staff set it up and supervise it next to the pool. The Pool
Parties can play Tri-Golf while they are waiting for the pool to close for
their event. We think it will be a great way to introduce golf and teach
basics to the new golfing generation.
--This year we increased selected season pass fees.
To conclude, every year is a new chapter at the Waverly Golf Course. I
anticipate the course conditions and the golfer experience to continue to
be outstanding.
News from the Staff:
First of all, Eric and I would like to congratulate Dr. Bill Withers as our 2014 Volunteer
Award winner. Bill is a Professor at Wartburg and has been working with staff and the
two boards, Country Club and Golf Commission, to develop a new Mission Statement:
“Waverly Golf Course and Country Club commits to provide scenic golf and social
experiences of exceptional value, embracing our historic past and our progressive
future, in the Greater Cedar Valley”. This statement will better reflect our new united
vision of working as a team to promote the Waverly Golf Course as a first class golf
destination.
The projects with some challenges that we will be facing this golf season include:
-Getting together our specs for the pond project we will be doing this fall. We had only
one bid and it came in over budget last fall. We were able to acquire more funds and
we are hopeful we will get more bids by sending them out this Spring.
-The Emerald Ash Borer was discovered in Bremer County. This is a highly
destructive pest that will kill Ash Trees. Fortunately there are only 57 Ash Trees on the
Course. We have developed a plan that includes, selectively cutting down trees and
replacing them with different varieties. We will also be continuing our present Scotch
pine replacement plan as well. This will also include replacing the two Arborvitaes and
the two Elms we planted last summer that may have already died. Thanks to all those
that have donated money toward re-treeing the golf course. Your donations have
been greatly appreciated.
-Another project will be removing the pine tree and the railroad tie walls in the
landscape planter at the Pro Shop and Country Club entrances. This project will
consist of removing the existing railroad tie walls and replacing them with the
landscape block we salvaged from a City flood buyout lot. This is the same block we
used on the # 3 Tee project. The project will greatly improve the aesthetics of the
areas and make a greater first impression of our facilities. This project is being
sponsored by the Country Club, JR Iverson family, and Josh Young family to honor
those that have passed.
-Eric and I have enjoyed our three years at the helm. We have appreciated all your
support you have given us over those years. As we start our fourth season let us
remind you that our door is always open, we encourage you to share your thoughts
and ideas. It is through team work that great things happen. Let us continue what we
have started and make the Waverly Golf Course “More than just a golf course” but a
truly enjoyable experience.

The Country Club did a great job on their facelift in 2014 and did some more
renovating on the banquet side of things also. They have opened up the
banquet area to tie in with the patio seating area. Should bring in more
weddings and functions
Thanks for everything last season. Lots of lessons and club-fittings and you
all played golf when you could.
Finally, Jordan David will take my place as Pro Shop Manager as I pursue a
“Can’t Pass Up” opportunity for my professional career and family. He has
been with us for the past 4 years and has the desire to eventually be a PGA
Golf Professional.

VETERANS APPRECIATION GOLF TOURNAMENT – was a huge
hit. Led by Em and Big Dog, this September event raised over $3,000 to the
GIVE Foundation (Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere). This is a
partnership between the Iowa City VA, Riverside Casino and Golf Resort and
the Iowa Section of the PGA. Our lead instructor is SGM Jim Dickerson,
PGA. Last year “Sarge” received the National PGA of America Patriot Award.
A great honor. We hope to raise even more money for this worthy Foundation
– come help us out in September.
So thanks for helping us be “more than a golf course”.
