Clay County received a four-year Community Alliances to
Promote Education (CAPE) grant from Lilly Endowment,
Inc., in December 2001 for a community literacy project.
The project’s mission is to improve reading skills,
communication skills and employment opportunities which
will give every citizen the chance to better their lives and
realize their full potential. The vision is to strengthen
existing programs. The grant provides funds for an
alternative school, adult education classes, preschool
classes, preschool classes, a distance learning lab, and
library and preschool services in the southern part of the
county. Funds are also available for childcare provider and
teacher trainings, literacy promotions, early childhood
screenings, higher education grants and coordination of
countywide literacy services.

their math and reading skills. The program includes early

involved in all the required parts [adult education, early
