Located in the very heart of Germany, Göttingen is a charming and lively university-city, with a special characteristic: it hosts the most kissed girl in the world! As the story goes... In front of the town hall in Gottingen, dating back to the Middle Ages, a fountain was erected in the first year The Ganseliesel's claim to be the most kissed girl in the world began soon after the fountain was built. A tradition quickly developed among students studying at the Georg-AugustUniversität of climbing the fountain and kissing the locally famous goose girl. “darling” of the newly graduated doctoral students of the university. Once they have passed the final examination, they take a trip from the university to the Gänseliesel. When they get to the fountain, they climb and kiss the girl. Then, as a sign of gratitude, they leave the Gänseliesel a bouquet of flowers. Due to negative side-effects brought on by this, the tradition was suspended. However, nowadays the Gänseliesel has become the On the conquer! Tour around the city The unforgettable KISS Indeed, Göttingen, as well as being a city of knowledge, also embraces an enchanting story, the story of the Gänseliesel. The „Gänseliesel“ is a fountain located in the centre of Göttingen. The finest artisans in Germany were invited to present some design ideas. Page 5 Göttinger 7 Getting to know the IP Team Vignette 1, February 2011 Page 6 Die Göttinger 7 and Göttingen as the city of knowledge With a population of about 120,000 inhabitants, Göttingen represents an important city in Germany. However, the number of inhabitants is not only what makes it special, but the quality of the people that have lived here and have made important contributions to the world’s knowledge. Göttingen has also been considered the centre of the mathematical world. It was here where David Hilbert and Hermann Minkowski laid the foundations for Einstein’s theory of relativity. During the last century, Göttingen’s academics have been awarded more than forty Nobel Prizes. Among them are Max Planck, the nuclear physicist Otto Hahn and Max Born, one of the founders of quantum theory. Nowadays, researchers such as the Nobel Prize Laureates Manfred Eigen and Erwin Neher are pushing back the frontiers of knowledge. During the last Century more than forty Nobel Prizes were awarded to former students and academics from Göttingen. The Göttinger 7 Several of the most important figures in the history of the university city, the so called “Göttinger Sieben” play a role; in 1837 seven professors protested against the abolition or alteration of the constitution of the Kingdom of Hanover by Ernest Augustus and refused to swear an oath to the new king of Hanover. The company of seven was led by Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann, who Göttinger Sieben himself was one of the key advocates of the unadulterated constitution. The other six were the brothers Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, famous for their fairy and folk tales; the jurist Wilhelm Eduard Albrecht, the historian Georg Gottfried Gervinus, the physicist Wilhelm Eduard Weber and the theologian and orientalist Heinrich Georg August Ewald. Their names have contributed enormously to the history of this city. Georgia Augusta However, it is not only people who have played an important role in giving Göttingen its fame, the Georg-August University itself is a significant symbol of the city. Since its foundation in 1737, the university became the most visited in Europe. Its strong focus on research-led teaching has granted Göttingen an internationally renowned status. The university is distinguished by the rich diversity of its fields of study (particularly in the humanities), its excellent facilities for the pursuit of scientific research and the outstanding quality of the areas that define its profile. In 2007, the Georg-AugustUniversität achieved success in the Initiative of Excellence of the German Federal and State Governments with its institutional strategy for the future entitled “Göttingen: Tradition–InnovationAutonomy”. This distinguishes Georgia Augusta as one of the nine German universities officially rated as holding the potential for global visibility and as a place amongst the foremost institutions of higher education.
