A HEARTFELT "THANKS"
June 2012
Dear Sheryl,
A little over a year ago, I was sleeping in my car. Today, I am sleeping
in my adorable apartment! I am working at a job that I love which enables
me to pay my rent and bills. I use my car to drive to and from work now,
instead of as a living space.
Because of you and everyone at Cross Roads, I was able to get my life
back and look to the future. I learned so much about myself and the world
while I was there and at my age it was quite a shock!
Please convey my deepest thanks and gratitude to the staff and Chris
and Dan. I really don’t know what I would have done without you and
Cross Roads.
Ginny reflects on her stay at Cross Roads House.
I hope to be in a position to someday pay it forward!
Ginny
Last spring, Ginny found herself in a place
she never in her life imagined she would

our transitional program where she got her
own small bedroom and a shared kitchen,
bathroom and living room area with five
roommates. She also began helping out in
the main shelter kitchen where volunteers
prepare dinner each night.
With the support of her case manager Sheryl
and other local agency providers, Ginny
worked to rebuild her life. Although it was
challenging, she eventually found employment. With some help from Womenade
(an organization that provides short term
financial assistance) and a local church, she
also got her car, which was out of commission, back on the road. While she stayed at
the shelter she also received medical care
from Families First Health & Support Center.
After spending just over a year at Cross
Roads House, Ginny was finally ready to
move out. The first apartment she found
seemed like it would be perfect, but at the
last moment her application was denied
because of her credit history. “That was a
major blow,” remembers Ginny.
Eventually, her case manager was able to
help her find an affordable living option.
She replied to an advertisement from a
woman who had space to rent out in her
house and as it turned out they were a great
match. Not only did she find a place to live
that is near her job, she also made a great
new friend. As Ginny describes the living
situation, “It was meant to be.”

Fall 2012
2012 ANNUAL REPORT
From The Executive Director
Dear Friends,
In the early 1980's, someone in Portsmouth without a place to stay
had to rely on virtual strangers to survive. A local sandwich shop
owned by John Hynes was known as the place to go for a free meal.
Rev. Gordon Allen of St. John’s remembers people knocking on the
doors of local churches looking for a place to sleep.
As the need for this help became too great, a group of clergy and business people came together to find a more effective solution. Their efforts produced the first shelter in the region
- next to Prescott Park, in the building that now houses the Players Ring theater on Marcy
Street. That group became the organization of Cross Roads House. Behind the scenes was
Portsmouth businessman and philanthropist Joseph Sawtelle. Mr. Sawtelle made the Marcy
St. building available, and later purchased the Pine Tree Motel on Rte 1 for use as a shelter.
The number of people coming to the door grew every year, and more and more of them
came with their families. Throughout the 1990's the Rte 1 campus was expanded, and transitional shelter programs were implemented. The next decade saw the addition of dinner
service and the replacement or renovation of the entire campus. To date, more than 5,000
different people, and over 500 families, have passed through our doors.
The people, the buildings, and the programs have all changed in 30 years. We continue to
see new faces, and search for the most effective ways to help them. But one constant remains – people without a place to stay can still count on their community to keep them safe.
Generous donors and volunteers have for a generation made this possible at Cross Roads
House, and we are grateful for your thirty years of support.
Chris Sterndale

From the

Director
Saying “thank you” hardly begins
to express our gratitude to all the
people who support Cross Roads House
each year. Quite literally, we could
not operate the shelter without the
extraordinary generosity of our donors
and volunteers. This past year we
once again relied on private contributions from individuals and businesses
to provide two-thirds of our operating
budget. We gratefully acknowledge
the donors listed on the following
pages who last year made it possible
for us to provide shelter to 377 homeless men, women and children in our
community.
Last year we formally launched the
Cross Roads House Legacy Society and
are pleased to list the inaugural members in this report. The Legacy Society
was formed for the purpose of receiving gifts and bequests and encourages
supporters to contribute to the shelter
through a provision in their will, trust
or other charitable giving vehicle.
Each year I am humbled and amazed
at the generosity of our donors. On
behalf of our residents and staff,
thank you!

Programs & Services
Cross Roads House serves as both a place of last resort, and a place
to begin rebuilding one's life and work toward obtaining permanent
housing. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, we have a
maximum of 96 beds with two shelter programs.
In our emergency shelter program, residents check in on a nightly
basis to secure a bed for the evening. Men and women are housed
seperately in large dormitory style rooms.
Beyond emergency shelter, our transitional shelter program provides an opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness and return
to permanent housing. Those willing to make necessary lifestyle
changes, learn new skills, and work toward long-term goals,
typically stay for extended periods. Our transitional program
provides private bedrooms with shared common living spaces.
All of our residents have access to basic life necessities and a

Thank you to everyone who
has contributed items
from our “wish list”!
Nearly every day kindhearted donors walk through our front
door to drop off items for shelter or resident use. We rely
heavily on these “in-kind” items and they are greatly
appreciated. On our wish list we ask for, and are fortunate
to receive, personal care items for our residents (like shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, etc.), bed linens, food, and many
other assorted items. In addition, many of our volunteers
contribute the food that they prepare for our residents’ evening
meal. All of these donations help us provide for our residents’
needs while saving the shelter money. Thank you to ALL our
generous donors who take the time to drop things off. Many of
you remain anonymous because you “drop and run”… please
know how much we value your contributions!

The 10th annual Benefit by the Sea on May 5th was truly an amazing evening where we marked our 30th anniversary. The
gala was a tremendous success and we are grateful to all the sponsors and donors who attended our event and made pledges of
support. The funds we raised will provide critical operating revenue for our shelter.

Is Cross Roads House a government agency
and how is the shelter funded?
How long do residents typically stay at the
shelter…is there a time limit?
No, we are not a government agency. Cross Roads House is an
independently run 501(c)3 non-profit agency governed by a board
of directors. Two thirds of our operating budget comes from private
donations. The other third comes from a combination of local, state
and federal government grants.
State regulations don’t allow a time limit. Last year the average
length of stay for individual adults was 9 weeks, and about 17
weeks for families.
Do you have volunteer opportunities and if so
how can I get involved?
Yes, we welcome volunteers! Most volunteers work in our kitchen
either prepping, cooking or serving dinner. Monthly, we offer a
one-hour volunteer orientation that includes a shelter tour, an
overview of kitchen operations and volunteer expectations.
What is the best way to support the shelter?
The number one type of support we need is financial. Two thirds
of our operating revenue comes from private donations from individuals and businesses. Donations at all levels are appreciated!
What types of items can be donated?
We have a “wish list” on our website that includes all the things
that we need to help us run the shelter. In addition, we include
an “immediate needs” list as part of our monthly email newsletter. The items that we typically need most often are personal
care products for our residents, twin size sheets and blankets, bath
towels, and food.
When can I drop off a donation?
Any time! We are open seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Which types of gift cards are most needed?
Gift cards to gas stations, Wal-Mart and Rite Aid are in greatest
demand.
Can someone from Cross Roads House come
to speak to my company/church/school/civic
organization?
Yes! We welcome the opportunity to share information about the
shelter. We can come to you…or groups are welcome to come to
the shelter for a tour.
What are the most significant factors
contributing to a person becoming homeless?
People coming to the shelter have typically encountered a
combination of problems that have led to their becoming homeless.
The most common are: family issues; physical or mental illness;
unemployment or insufficient wages; and substance abuse. Almost
everyone at the shelter struggles with the high cost of local rents.
How do you help beyond offering people a place
to sleep?
Once someone becomes a resident at Cross Roads House, they have
access to a vast array of supportive services. (See page six for a full
list.) Our case managers assess critical needs and help residents
get the services they need. Case managers also help residents set
goals and create a plan to return to stable housing.
What is the best way to keep up to date on
shelter activities, volunteer opportunities, and
shelter needs?
Sign up to receive our monthly email newsletter by sending your
name and email address to: [email protected]. We will
never release your address to anyone else.
Do you accept furniture and used clothing?
No, but we can refer you to several other agencies nearby that do.
