Sixty Plus News Vol 43 Number 7 Karin Canfield Moore, Editor January 2016 Linda Salisbury, Typesetter MISSION STATEMENT: T he T ownsend Council on Aging is committed to the continued growth and well being of our senior citizens by providing programs, education, information and referral services with a goal of helping seniors achieve the best quality of life possible. From the Desk of the Director – As I sit at my desk to write this, we still haven’t had snow, but when I think of January, snow is what I see. My mind takes me on a walk down the trail near my home where the snow crunches underfoot as I trod slowly along, my thoughts wandering and softly interrupted by the song of a chickadee or the whoosh of snow falling from a branch. I wish I could share the scene in my mind – the dappled sunlight, the silvery glinting of the snow that’s not quite white or blue, the tracks of wildlife seldom seen, but obviously nearby. Eventually I think of Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”. Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village, though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. Robert Frost This is the time of year to be quiet within yourself. Rest your spirit, feed your soul, take time to embrace the uniqueness that is you. Breathe. What Is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s life force energy is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. ~ Happy New Year 2016 From the Friends of Townsend Seniors ~ Selectmen Proclaim January 2016 as Seniors’ Month in Townsend!
