Daihatsu
«Innovation for Tomorrow»
Mini-cars and other small cars are naturally playful. They allow for a
particular type of mobility and make the driver feel as one with the car.
They are very environmentally-friendly and demonstrate great conviviality,
while offering considerable volume for their size.
By combining all these qualities with the greatest possible elegance, Daihatsu
is becoming a trailblazer for a future where small cars will be the norm.
That future is not just a product of our imagination; it is just around the corner.
These days, many questions are raised about cars. In particular, the
environment has become an urgent issue for all humanity and for future
generations. A rapid reduction in the environmental impact of cars is essential.
Small cars - and mini-cars, in particular - allow you to conserve resources
and fuel while reducing noxious emissions and so they are ideally suited
to the needs of our time. The importance of moderation is starting to
matter to everyone. For decades, Daihatsu has been seeking to create
a truly affluent society by giving small cars their due priority. Today, the
contribution that our small cars can make to the planet is becoming ever
more obvious.
On the occasion of Daihatsu’s 100th birthday, we adopted the new
Daihatsu Group slogan: «Innovation for Tomorrow». It is under this banner that we are presenting our latest visionary innovations for cars.
Currently, the Daihatsu range comprises six models: the ultra-compact
and economical Cuore and Trevis; the adaptable Sirion; the Materia,
already a cult car; the Terios, a compact SUV; and the Copen, a coupeconvertible.
1
Daihatsu
and the environment
Daihatsu cars are perfectly suited to current market requirements. The company
does produce smaller cars but it offers something more, since the technology
built into those cars is also a response to the current environmental situation.
Let us look at three of those technologies in detail.
New engine
Daihatsu has a brand new engine that is at the cutting edge of technology.
It is high-performance, environmentally-friendly and quiet. The distinctive
features of this high-performance engine are long-stroke pistons, ultra-compact
combustion chambers, greatly reduced friction and an aluminium cylinder
block. It posts performance levels that are exceptional for its category* (5%
better torque** at low and medium engine speed for an expanded torque
range and fuel consumption down about 10%). With its reduced weight
(47 kg), it is the lightest car in its category. Combined with its compact
dimensions, it is the adaptable high-performance car personified.

New catalytic converter
The first super-intelligent catalytic converter (Super Intelligent Catalyst)
extends its capacity for self-regeneration to the three precious metals that
you find in catalytic converters. Created through the application of original
Daihatsu nanotechnology, the Super Intelligent Catalyst is the first catalytic
converter to allow satisfactory self-regeneration of the three catalytic
precious metals, namely palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh) and platinum (Pt).
In a conventional catalytic converter, the precious metal particles that are
dispersed tend to agglomerate over time, which reduces the effective
area available for the reaction with the exhaust fumes. By integrating the
precious metals into the ceramic substratum in the form of ions, their
smallest form, Daihatsu has developed a «self-regeneration» mechanism
meaning that, by reacting with the natural changes taking place in the
exhaust fumes, the ions continuously go through perovskite crystals so as
to eliminate the formation of conglomerates. Thanks to this technology, it
2
is now possible to achieve an exceptional performance in the purification
of exhaust fumes while significantly reducing the use of precious metals,
which are scarce resources. Combined with the Daihatsu Catalyst Early
Activation System process, which allows for the purification of exhaust
fumes during the engine start-up phase, this technology has already been
adopted for production vehicles.
New transmission
Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) with a metal belt is light, compact
and ultra-high-performance. Using the three-shaft gear train configuration
with a reduction in the main shaft (a world first*), this continuous variable
transmission achieves a very high transmission performance with a reduced
belt rotation speed. Aside from the fact that it allows for 10% greater
acceleration combined with about a 15% reduction in fuel consumption,
this transmission is one of the lightest** in its category (just 58 kg). Each
component of this new-generation CVT system has been optimised for
mini-car applications.

Mud Master-C and Tanto Concept:
stars at the Motor Show
For the Paris Motor Show and to coincide with that international-scale
exhibition, Daihatsu wanted «to export» to Paris two cars that are proving
to be a triumph in their native country: the Mud Master-C and the Tanto Custom
MUD MASTER-C
This small but robust passenger vehicle deploys its compactness and its
ultra-light weight for greater off-road agility. It has an integral structure for
exceptional robustness and a great loading capacity. The MUD MASTER-C was
developed by Raita Suzuki, the professional cyclist and chief adviser for this
model, used to support teams of mountain bikers.
Off-road performance and the fording of rivers
The MUD MASTER-C uses a hub reduction system that transmits engine power
through gears located between the transmission shaft and the wheel hub.
This arrangement allows it to achieve exceptional ground clearance and
ventral, approach and departure angles. The very strong gear ratio improves
power transference, even at low engine speeds. With its over-sized off-road
tyres for better ground clearance, these characteristics easily allow it to
negotiate off-track conditions and to cross marshy areas. Its integral structure
ensures a robust response to every test. With its compact bodywork and
integral transmission system, the MUD MASTER-C demonstrates impressive
off-road qualities.
A plethora of accessories
With its wide gull wing doors arranged on three sides, the MUD MASTER-C offers
remarkable adaptability, ideal for loading and unloading bikes in this
version, as a support vehicle for teams of mountain bikers. Its many potential
bodywork configurations make it an adaptable multi-purpose vehicle (snowboarding, landscaping work etc.). Its transmission is equipped with a power
cut-out mechanism (Power Take-Off, PTO) that allows for the installation of an
external electric generator or a hoist.
6
A unique style
The square lines of the MUD MASTER-C highlight its robustness and its strong
personality. Running boards are deployed automatically when the doors
open. The car’s robust image is also evident in its bare instrument panel
equipped with a multi-function LCD screen and its water-resistant seats.
TANTO CUSTOM
Developed around the «top-of-the-range long-journey vehicle» concept, the
Tanto CUSTOM is notable for its strong personality and its distinctive external
decoration.
The positioning of its wheels at the four corners of the body gives the vehicle
a robust look, while the pillar-less motorised sliding door adds a touch of
refinement and innovation to the vehicle as a whole.
In Japan, the Tanto delights families by offering remarkable internal space
within a small car whose dimensions are kept in check.
Thanks to its pillarless structure and motorised sliding door (specifications
combined for the first time in a mini-car), the Tanto offers outstanding ease of
access and elicits a strong feeling of freedom and wellbeing.
It is a new development in the exceptional storage space provided by the
Daihatsu Tanto. Thanks, in particular, to its smaller-scale modules and extended
wheelbase, this new model possesses a cab with an exceptional volume for
the mini-car category.
Interior
Thanks to its generous space and its modularity, which will delight families,
the interior of the new Tanto is both playful and pleasant. It is also the first
mini-vehicle to be fitted out with imitation wooden flooring.
The cab of the new Tanto CUSTOM displays top-of-the-range refinement that
gives it a warm and pleasant atmosphere worthy of a first-class cabin.
Modularity
The spacious interior and exceptional modularity of the Tanto have what it
takes to satisfy its occupants’ need for comfort thanks to its adjustable seat
arrangement. The front passenger seat slides for 280 mm and folds up to
make a table. By sliding it as far forward as it will go, you free up a wide
area in front of the rear seat that easily allows access for a child in a baby
seat and that makes it particularly easy to load and unload shopping bags
when returning from the supermarket. The right and left rear seats, which
can be adjusted separately, slide for 260 mm; they can also be tilted and
folded up.

New
Daihatsu CUORE
Top for design
For its seventh version, the CUORE offers an accomplished style that perfectly
suits an urban environment. Its lines are contemporary, finely-honed and
aerodynamic. It offers an excellent balance between the technical
constraints of product development, the need for driver-oriented innovation
and the smaller scale of the vehicle.
The outcome represents loyalty to the car manufacturer’s initial concept:
maximum space inside an ultra-compact external volume.
Top for savings
The new CUORE is the top-performing car on the market for its fuel efficiency.
It has the highest overall marks for the 6 criteria contributing to the ADEME*
classification. The new CUORE boasts a minimum consumption of 4.4 l/100 km
with CO2 emissions particularly low at just 104 g/km!.
Driving the new CUORE also remains a true pleasure. It knows how to earn
respect in the urban jungle thanks to the dynamism and power of its
new 1.0-litre 69-hp engine and to its exceptional driveability, the fruit of
DAIHATSU research.
ADEME: French Agency for the environment and energy control / 2008 classification
*
Top for comfort
Minimum size, maximum roominess
Rare is the car manufacturer who successfully designs a compact 3.46 m
car whose internal volume is so spacious and so perfectly put together.
The front and rear doors stand out from other models in its category by
opening to 90° so as to allow you to get into and out of the car very easily.
The interior design puts passengers completely at their ease. The adjustable,
sliding rear seat responds to every possible situation and to every day
needs: shopping, child’s pushchair, bulky objects etc.
Interior design to suit a large car
The controls are ideally located and the instruments perfectly legible. The
space in the cab, the internal comfort and the finishing work are worthy of
a saloon. Driving in such conditions is unheard of for a car in this category.
8
Top for safety
The new CUORE is equipped with sophisticated safety systems. It has proven
its capacity to protect its occupants in the event of an accident by passing
the most up-to-date collision tests with flying colours. In the event of impact,
its hazard lights come on automatically and its doors unlock in order to
facilitate evacuation. A retractable steering column and brake pedal
ystem protects the driver’s thorax and legs.
The new CUORE boasts the shortest braking distances in its category, incorporating
ABS combined with EBD. Thanks to its two airbags, seat belts with pretensioners
at the front and running gear developed specially for Europe, the CUORE is
becoming the new benchmark for safety in its category.
Top for innovation
Motivated by its great concern about the environmental impact of cars,
DAIHATSU is a trailblazer when it comes to improving the quality of exhaust
fumes. With the assistance of nanotechnology, DAIHATSU has developed
a series of processes taking environmental technology forward for the
automotive sector. In practice, its catalytic converter retains its qualities to an
almost unlimited extent, thereby significantly improving exhaust fume quality.

The Daihatsu
range in France
TREVIS
The TREVIS represents the perfect illustration of the DAIHATSU strategy.
For more than a century, DAIHATSU has been focussing its research and
mobilising all its expertise so as to design compact cars suited to ever more
intense and polluting urban traffic. Chic, retro and elegant, the TREVIS is a
really lovely urban runabout.
Her deliberately neo-classical design and nice curves give her an ultraseductive look. Her interior matches up to her appearance: original and
refined, clever and rich. Boasting top-of-the-range equipment, economical,
green and a pleasure to drive, the TREVIS stands as a new benchmark in
the «Premium» urban car sector. She excels about town and is no slouch
on the road!
Her elegant, clever interior offers an overabundance of equipment: air
conditioning, audio system, Momo adjustable leather steering wheel, electric
pack, height-adjustable driver’s seat, ABS with EBD1 etc. In addition, each
item has been designed with the greatest of care and quality.
The TREVIS is propelled by a 1-litre engine, the result of the latest DAIHATSU
research. This dynamic, high-performance engine allows you to reduce
fuel consumption to 4.8l/100 km* and CO2 emissions to just 114g/km*,
making the TREVIS one of the most socially responsible cars in its category.
Comfort and road-holding have been optimised thanks to a suspension
system designed particularly for European roads. As another benefit about
town, the TREVIS is available with an automatic gearbox.
The DAIHATSU engineers have done their best to reinforce the TREVIS’ active
and passive safety. In an emergency, the EBD-assisted ABS system optimises
braking distance. The front end has been designed especially to ensure
maximum protection for pedestrians in the event of impact. The progressive
deformation and shock absorption structure, airbags and belt pretensioners
transform the cab into a survival cell for the passengers. These efforts were
confirmed during crash tests carried out according to the most stringent
standards applicable anywhere in the world.

SIRION
Compact and resolutely high tech, the SIRION offers a concept that is original in
its category: a true amalgam of innovative style, technology and adaptability.
Its external lines give it a personality of its own. Externally compact, the SIRION
offers extraordinary interior space designed for refinement and modularity.
The SIRION is a compact car with an array of resources. On board, every
effort has been made to meet the most eclectic needs of the modern driver:
the comfort of a contemporary, minimalist interior, with ergonomics and
equipment to the fore. The multi-functional back seats can be adapted to
the number of passengers or the volume transported.
Running on a 1l or 1.3l engine, the SIRION possesses one of the best power/
fuel consumption ratios in its category. Its VVT (Variable Valve Timing)
system, with its computer-controlled opening of valves, allows for excellent
acceleration at any engine speed and an exceptionally low fuel consumption averaging 5l/100 Km* despite the deployment of significant power,
respectively 70 hp (1l) and 91 hp (1.3l). These new engines set the standard
for environmental protection, with CO2 emissions of just 118g/km*. 90%
of the SIRION’S component parts were specially designed and stamped for
recycling. In addition, as a global innovation, it is equipped with an intelligent
«self-regenerating» catalytic converter capable of maintaining its performance
levels throughout its lifespan.
Tested over thousands of kilometres in Europe, the running gear allows for
exceptional road-holding while maintaining optimum passenger comfort.
The ABS system working in tandem with EBD, belt pretensioners, and front
and side airbags as standard offer reinforced safety. The SIRION has been
tested according to the most stringent global standards.
In the event of impact, its cab is a true survival cell, thanks to its numerous
body reinforcements and to the use of new materials in bumper manufacturing.

MATERIA
The MATERIA is a compact, adaptable and distinctly avant-garde leisure vehicle.
It fits in perfectly with the innovation strategy of DAIHATSU, which for
100 years has been designing compact, economical vehicles in which the
pleasure of driving goes hand in hand with interior space and respect for
the environment.
Suited to any lifestyle, its unusual image highlights its distinctiveness in
anticipating the needs of 21st century drivers. Like its lines, its internal ergonomics
are audaciously high-tech and futuristic yet functional.
Its impressive interior space is readily adjustable thanks to its sliding rear
seat, which can be divided and adapts to every possible lifestyle so as to
maximise the conviviality of family travel.
Its high-tech interior design incorporates numerous clever storage areas.
Its equipment would pass muster in a higher category: 4 electric windows
and rear-view mirrors, MP3 radio CD, height-adjustable steering wheel,
air conditioning, central speedometer, remote locking etc.
Its compact dimensions give the MATERIA exceptional driveability with a steering
lock of just 4.9 m.
The MATERIA has undergone crash tests carried out according to the most
stringent international standards applicable. These proved that the body
structure, which incorporates the most advanced passive safety systems,
provides the largest possible survival space and gives the driver and
passengers a very high degree of protection. In the event of an emergency,
the EBD-assisted ABS system optimises braking distances.
Special research went into the bonnet, which incorporates deformable
structures for better pedestrian protection.
The MATERIA runs on a 1.3l engine (1.5l on the BVA), providing 90 hp. The
product of the latest DAIHATSU innovations, this is a dynamic, high-performance engine yet it is low on fuel consumption: just 6.6 l/100 km*. In
order to respond to environmental concerns, the MATERIA has an “intelligent”
catalytic converter as standard, a unique feature worldwide and one that
retains its non-polluting qualities throughout its lifespan. Driveable in town,

Its designer dashboard is functional and ergonomic. It is generously equipped
as standard: air conditioning, on-board computer, integrated radio CD,
electric pack, 5 aluminium wheels etc.
The 1.5-litre engine, incorporating a variable distribution system was developed
especially in order to make the TERIOS vivacious, economical and green.
Whatever the playing field, it provides sufficient power at every engine
speed (77 Kw at 6 000 rpm with 105 hp) as well as the flexibility (140 Nm
at 4,400 rpm) essential to every driving style.
A permanent 4x4
The central differential blocking system allows you to get out of tricky situations
with optimal mobility. What is more, the VSC(1) system transfers all the
power from one wheel to the other in the event of further difficulties.
The permanent four-wheel-drive arrangement optimises active safety on
slippery surfaces and off-road. Combined with ABS and EBD, which avoids
jamming the wheels in order to maintain optimum grip, the emergency
braking support helps the driver to reduce his braking distance. Combined
with the TRC anti-skid facility, the VSC(1) system corrects trajectory electronically,
and assists with DAC(2) descents and HAC(2) hill starts, allowing you to
maintain control in the most extreme situations. In the event of impact, the
high-performance steel structure has been specially designed in order to
absorb the energy created and to protect the passengers as much as possible.
The airbags and belt pretensioners complement this system by providing
extra protection. In the event of an accident, an intelligent system unlocks
the doors automatically, activates the hazard lights and interior lighting
and cuts off the fuel inflow.
