SYMMETRY
A figure is said to be symmetrical when there exists a line which divides
it into two parts such that if the figure is folded along that line the two
parts exactly overlap each other..
LINE OF SYMMETRY: The line that divides the figure into two
identical parts is called the line of symmetry or axis of symmetry.
A figure may have no line of symmetry , only one line of symmetry, two
lines of symmetry, three or more lines of symmetry.
Eg. Square has 4 lines of symmetry
Figure having no line of symmetry are called ASYMMETRIC figures .
Eg. Scalene triangle
Symmetry in geometrical shapes
A. Triangles
a) Equilateral triangle – It has three lines of symmetry.
b) Isosceles triangle – It has one line of symmetry.
c) Scalene triangle– It has no line of symmetry.
B. Quadrilaterals
a) Square– It has four lines of symmetry.
b) Rectangle– It has two lines of symmetry.
c) Kite– It has one line of symmetry.
d) Rhombus – It has two lines of symmetry.
e) Isosceles Trapezium – It has one line of symmetry.
f) Trapezium – It has no line of symmetry.
g) Parallelogram– It has no line of symmetry.
C. Regular Pentagon– It has five lines of symmetry.
D. Regular Hexagon – It has six lines of symmetry.
E. Circle- It has infinite lines of symmetry.
