Astrolabe Park stormwater renewal

Astrolabe Park stormwater
renewal
Community newsletter – October 2015
From 12 October 2015 Sydney
Water will be renewing the
stormwater pipes at Astrolabe Park,
Daceyville.
Under Astrolabe Park are two large stormwater
pipes that direct stormwater into Botany
wetlands. Wetlands act as natural filters,
treating stormwater run-off from property and
streets.
These pipes are deteriorating so we’re
replacing them. This work will improve the
reliability of the stormwater system and water
quality in the wetlands.
What does the work involve?
We will be excavating and installing new
stormwater pipes along the existing internal
access road, then through Eastlake Golf
Course to the wetland. See the map on the
next page.
A new outlet to the wetlands will also be built.
This includes a new gross pollutant trap and
some small changes to the wetland.
Why is the new alignment different to the
old?
Astrolabe Park was used as a landfill during
the 1960s and 1970s. As a result our early
assessments identified low levels of
contaminants on the site. Our new alignment
minimises the disturbance of contaminated
materials and impacts on residents.

Will it impact access to the park?
A large section of Astrolabe Park will be closed
during the work. This includes closing the
park's internal access road and carparks. A
permanent section of the park will remain open
during the work.
We are working closely with the City of Botany
Bay Council and the community to ensure
minimal impacts on residents. This includes
the potential for providing a replacement
temporary carpark off Isaac Smith Street. The
proposed location of this carpark is shown on
the map on the next page.
What does it mean for the local
community?
Enviropacific, Sydney Water’s contractor, is
qualified and highly experienced in safely
remediating contaminated sites.
We will implement a range of measures and
adhere to Australian Standards, Office of the
Environment and Heritage and WorkCover
requirements to ensure the safety of the local
community, our workers, and the environment.
We'll also minimise the impact of construction
work on the local area by using measures to
reduce dust, noise and vehicle traffic.
How long will it take?
Work will start mid October 2015 and be
completed by about mid-2017, weather
permitting.
