Families do better when they stay together

Brickman Founders Day
Savio House was this year’s service project for the
Brickman Founders Day 2012. Roughly 30 volunteers gathered at the west Denver Campus on October
5, 2012. They installed a split rail fence with new
plants between Savio’s Red Brick and Education Center buildings. The volunteers worked through a cold
rainy day with an amazing can-do attitude.
Brickman is a national expert in landscape needs such
as design/build, horticulture, maintenance, site enhancement, irrigation, tree care and sports turf.
A special thanks from Savio to everyone at Brickman.
Friends Support Savio
Savio was blessed this past holiday season when three
groups put on fund raising events to support the families we serve. Joyce Rocha-Brown, Director of Marketing, Northwood Retail LLC and Southlands Mall,
hosted Movies with Santa where the price of admission was donated to Savio. Visiting the mall, staff
found posters throughout the area promoting the movies and the vision of Savio.
At the same time, Barbara Brooks of Brooks Marketing Group, held a social event which resulted in donated pajamas and a visit by Santa Claus to the Savio holiday party for client families with small children. The children loved seeing “the real” Santa Claus and the
gifts they received.
The staff of the Savio Children’s Division and other volunteers solicited commitments to support families as
part of Savio’s Adopt-a-Family program effort. People were asked to purchase gifts for families where there
would be no celebration unless outside support was given. Fifty families received holiday gifts due to the
kindness of these people.
Overall, a great way to end a most successful year!

Thomas W. Gamel
Tom was introduced to Savio by long-term Trustee and Treasurer Bert Bidwell.
Bert encouraged Tom to visit Savio and learn more of the agency. Tom met in
1985 with President Paul Tschetter and Executive Director William Hildenbrand
and promptly made a significant donation to the capital drive ongoing at the time.
The Trustees were in a three phase remodel effort of the existing facilities started
in 1983 and Tom’s gift allowed Phase III to be completed.
Tom is an officer of Timpte Industries Inc. which is the leader in the manufacture
of aluminum bulk commodity trailers. The organization has sales and service locations throughout the Midwest and their headquarters are in Denver, Colorado.
Tom and his children have supported Savio throughout the years with significant
financial and in-kind gifts. The Gamel name is also associated with numerous
other Denver charities and Tom is an active participant in supporting the Denver Public Schools effort to
more effectively serve students.
Tom’s most recent actions at Savio have been to support the purchase of the new Savio location at 1530
West 13th Avenue, Denver, Colorado and playing a leadership role in the pending retirement of the current
Executive Director. Savio now has a detailed transition plan for the Executive Director and Tom is working
closely with the Trustees to make it a success.
Savio has been blessed to have the support and friendship of Tom Gamel.

New Group Home a Reality
Savio established a new group home in Lakewood, Colorado for
six youth who are without family. The home has been named after
the non-profit, Bridgeway, which previously operated the facility.
It is a great location for children to thrive and grow into healthy
adulthood. Each youth will have their own room with plenty of
space for recreation and social living.
A special thanks to everyone, from those who made child care
credit donations to those who supported the Cobiz Financials Biz
Bash and other charitable giving, for making this purchase a
reality.

New Trauma Services for Children and Families
After two years of study and staff training, Savio now offers specialized counseling to family members who
have experienced significant trauma in their lives. Services include screening, assessment and counseling to
address trauma that left untreated, could disrupt a person’s ability to have a normal life. Savio’s traditional
approach to the needs of struggling families has been to teach and counsel parents how to be successful. This
new approach is a positive addition to Savio’s services. Trauma-focused therapy is one more skill a counselor
can carry into the home in helping families.
