Dear Parents, Facts about Battle of the Books: Battle I Battle II Battle

Dear Parents,
Your student has shown interest in joining Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books is a
competition sponsored by the Chandler Public Library. It is very important to know that this is a
voluntary program, but if your child decided to sign up to be on a team, they must commit to the
program for the entire school year. They are required to attend practices, and they will be pulled out
of class four times during the school year, for an hour, to participate in the battle competitions, which
will be held in the Jacobson Media Center. We are limited to 10 teams per grade level, so it is
important this permission slip is turned in on time. If your child is on our “waiting list” we will make sure
to inform you if their team is chosen to participate before our first practice.
Facts about Battle of the Books:
1. Participates must be in either 5th or 6th grade.
2. There is a $25 fee to participate. Participants will pay through tax credit in Infinite Campus.
3. There are three battles (where questions about the books they read are asked). Four preselected books are required to be read by each team member. There is a total of 12 books
for the entire year (please see list below).
4. There is a final battle at the end of the year where finalists will participate.
5. Team size is limited to three students per group.
6. Once the first competition has begun, team members MAY NOT be changed. The only
exception is if a team member has left the school. An alternant will be assigned to the team if
needed.
7. Practices will be help to prepare for each battle/competition (please see schedule below).
8. Location of practice will depend on who your child’s coach is, and you will be notified via
hardcopy and email before your first practice, which will be the week of August 3rd.
9. For further information, you may visit the Media Center tab on the Jacobson school website.
You will also have your child’s coach’s information after they are assigned.
2016-2017 Reading List: with your tax credit fee, each student will have access to all 12 books.
There will be no
need to get a book from the store or public library. These books do belong to the Jacobson Library and will be used by all
battle members on a checkout schedule.

Battle of the Books Participants will need to pay a fee of $25 through the Parent Portal on Infinite
Campus. With this fee, students will be supplied with a Battle T-shirt that will be worn at all battles.
Students will also be supplied with the books needed to read based on a schedule.
Your Account will not be charged until after the club starts. We will let you know once your account
gets charged. Thank you.

How to Make a Fee Payment
DO NOT PAY UNTIL YOUR ACCOUNT HAS BEEN CHARGED.
1. Go to cusd80.com
2. Click on the Parents and Students tab at the top.
3. Under P, click on Parent and Student Portal
4. At the bottom of the screen, you can click on the icon for the Infinite Campus Portal
Login.
5. Enter your username and password
6. On the left hand side of the screen, click on payments.
7. Under the appropriate child select the option “Jaco Battle of the Books”.
a. You can add other clubs at this time or just pay for Battle of the books, it is your
preference.
8. Click the Continue button at the bottom.
9. Enter your payment information.
