The Weeds Drawing Project
Leaves Singing in the
Sunshine
Call and Response
Caro Williams
When: 8 April – 28 April
Where: David Nathan Park
Opening: Saturday 8 April, 1pm
When: 7 April – 14 May
Where: Nathan Homestead Gallery
Opening: Thursday 6 April, 6pm
The Weeds Drawing Project is the
creation of students from the Faculty of
Creative Arts, Manukau Institute of
Technology. It showcases a collection of
works on paper that explore aspects of the
common weed using text and image.
Artist Caro Williams has made sound
recordings of birdsong heard at Fort
Takapuna Reserve in Auckland, and on
site at the Bulford Kiwi on Salisbury Plain,
England, where the giant image of a Kiwi
remains carved into the hillside etched into
the chalk by NZ troops waiting to return
home at the end of the First World War.
Leaves singing in the sunshine
Chervelle Athena, Holly Gillard and Lara
Thomas
The sounds of the dawn chorus from each
country play across the garden space
linking these historic military landscapes
through intertwining birdsong punctuated
by a morse code transmission of a WW1
poem.
Leaves singing in the sunshine is an
exhibition showcasing the work of three
emerging artists. The artists explore a
range of media from sculpture and print to
photography. Through the processes and
materials they use each of the three artists
explores ideas around nature, land and
time.
Call and Response is supported by Creative New
Zealand World War 1 Centenary (WW100) Cocommissioning.

The Ghost South Road
TOP ART Schools Exhibition
Paul Janman, Scott Hamilton and
Ian Powell
Touring Exhibition
-
When: 29 May – 2 June
Where: Nathan Homestead Foyer
Late night: Thursday 1 June until 7pm
-
When: 19 May – 25 June
Where: Nathan Homestead Gallery
Opening: Thursday 18 May, 6pm
Top Art is an annual touring exhibition
featuring a selection of the NCEA Level 3
portfolios that achieved Excellence in
Visual Art in the previous year. Five
streams are covered: design, painting,
photography, printmaking and sculpture.
The Great South Road has seldom been
considered as more than a mere
thoroughfare by most New Zealanders.
Filmmaker Paul Janman, writer Scott
Hamilton and cinematographer Ian Powell
want to change that. Having recorded a
series of prolonged research walks with
still photography, moving image and
notebook, the three collaborators are now
joined by a host of historians, tohunga,
actors, gamers and community members
in a journey through time, space, myth and
reality on Auckland's infamous founding
roadway.
Top Art provides an opportunity for
secondary students and teachers to gain
an understanding of what is required to
achieve Excellence at Level 3. It also
allows members of the public to see the
high quality art being created in schools.

The end product of this work in progress
will soon be a book and a documentary

years using titles as an explanation such
as ‘knowledge in baggage’.
