Single Replacement Reactions
Lesson 17
Chemistry 10
Objective:You will be able to
-identify single replacement reactions
-predict products for SR reactions
-use the solubility table to predict the phase
of the products in the reaction.
DEMO Copper wire and silver nitrate.
What happened during this reaction?
The chemical reaction is as follows.
Single Replacement
As we have seen, one element can replace
another in a reaction between a compound and an
element.
Cmpd AB + elem C ➔ cmpd AC + elem B
when element C is a non-metal.
Cmpd AB + elem C ➔ cmpd CB + elem A
when element C is a metal.
Reading a solubility table.
Solubility
Determine if the following compounds
are soluble in water
NaCl
CaSO4
PbCl2
(NH4)3PO4
Ex 1: Calcium metal reacts with a sodium
carbonate solution. Predict the products and the
phase state of them.
Ex 2: Predict the products and their state when
nitrogen gas reacts with an ammonium
phosphide solution.
Ex 3: Predict the products and their
states when sodium reacts with water.
