Lecture Objectives: Structure and Chemistry of fatty acids

Lecture Objectives:
Structure and Chemistry of fatty acids and compound lipids
related to CVS
At the end of the lecture, students should be able to:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Define lipids. List major functions of lipids.
Classify lipids in terms of simple, complex and derived lipids.
Define fatty acids. Describe the structure of fatty acids.
Classify fatty acids on the basis of saturation, shape (Cis/Trans) and
nutrition (Essential/non-essential).
5. Describe the functions of fatty acids with their sources and effects of
dietary deficiencies.
6. Discuss harmful and healthier dietary fats with their sources and effect on
CVS
7. Discuss the risk factors of CVD and recommendation of fats intake for risk
reduction.
