Symposium:
On Friday, March 24, at 1:00-5:30 pm, the Indiana Academy of Science hosted a special Biodiversity
Symposium with the theme “Fire and the Forest-Prairie Boundary.” The 12 presentations covered the
diversity of organisms we Midwesterners know and love, they provide insight into how our natural history
collections are maintained, and they demonstrate how large databases and the internet are making this
information widely available. See the list of presenters who joined us for this special Biodiversity and
Natural Areas Symposium, highlighted following the abstract title section in this Program Book. Dr. Eric
Knox-Director, Indiana University Herbarium, Biodiversity Symposium Facilitator.

BOOK SIGNINGS:
Bill McKnight will be introducing his new book, and presenting a Hot Topic
discussion from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Room 203)
Rantings of a Mad Botanist: A Comprehensive Guide to
Gardening and Land use Practices Emphasizing Central
Indiana (2016)
"Why didn't you write this book 30 years ago when I REALLY needed it? Think how
much time and money I could have saved. It should be at every nursery & garden
center in the central Midwest." - Dr. Terri Park
"Great book. I found it entertaining and informative. Not only could my mom read and get something out of it, but
so could a horticulture student at Purdue." - Ryan Volz, Rosie's (Garden Center), IN.
The author is a former museum curator and biology teacher with over 50 years gardening experience. He lives
on a three-acre property in Indianapolis where he deals with the usual issues of an urban landscape, especially
exotic invasives.

BOOK SIGNINGS continued:
Introducing Flora of the Chicago Region: A Floristic and
Ecological Synthesis (2017) published by the Indiana Academy of
Science, 1372 p.
Gerould Wilhelm and Laura Rericha will be presenting a ‘Hot Topic’
discussion from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon (Room 205), and signing their new
book this afternoon.
‘This will be considered the most complete flora ever written for any place in the
U.S. They have meticulously and accurately brought the status of vascular plants in
the Chicago region up-to-date, while painstakingly recording an incredible array of
interactions between the flora and other organisms, especially insects. The intricate pollination of some plants,
many of these associations not previously known or recorded, is almost beyond belief."- Robert H. Mohlenbrock,
Distinguished professor emeritus, SIU Carbondale.
"The scholarship is off the scale!" - Bill N. McKnight. This tome substantially supercedes the 4th edition of the
now out-of-print Plants of the Chicago Region (Swink & Wilhelm, 1994).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Tears of Re: Beekeeping in Ancient Egypt
Gene Kritsky will be signing his most recent book all day today.
"This is beyond doubt the most comprehensive study of honey bees and beekeeping in
this most ancient civilization." --Bee Culture
"Readable in a few hours, the book is the sort of unexpected delight one hopes to find
in an old hotel, and it deserves to do well. Let's hope the ... buzz spreads." --The
Independent.
"Kritsky has created a book that is an enjoyable, engaging read and also contributes
meaningfully to our understanding of the cultural significance of the bee and apiculture
in Egypt. ... Kritsky's work is an essential starting point for understanding beekeeping and discussions of bees
throughout the Mediterranean world, in art, and in history." --Bryn Mawr Classical Review.

Science members.

experts in primate behavior, including the cognitive abilities of the
highly intelligent orangutan, and is a highly regarded lecturer.
Dr. Shumaker has written a number of scientific articles
and scholarly books on primate behavior and cognition. He is
currently on the faculty at Indiana University-Bloomington and is an
affiliate of the Krasnow Institute at George Mason University. His newest book, Animal Tool Behavior,
was published in 2011 and is considered the definitive work on the use and manufacture of tools by
animals. As the 132nd Annual Academy Meeting Luncheon Speaker, Dr. Robert Shumaker will
