Holiday Greetings from the
President of the Friends – Dallas
Slade ….
I hope everyone enjoyed festive and fruitful
December holidays. As President of the
Friends of the Burlington Public Library, I
would like to thank you all for your
contributions toward making 2016 a
productive year for the Friends.
I would also like to invite you all to join us
at the Friends Annual Meeting which will
take place at the library later this month on
Monday, January 23rd @ 7:00 PM. At
this meeting you will have the opportunity
to cast your vote for the 2017 slate of
officers for the Friends Board. The meeting
will be followed by the Friends’ January
adult evening program. To accommodate
our speaker’s schedule, the January program
will be Monday, January 23rd. Please note
this is a departure from our regular 3rd
Thursday of the month. The January
program includes author Nathalia Holt who
will discuss her new book, Rise of The
Rocket Girls.
Thanks to your generosity, the Friends of the
Library enjoyed a very successful 2016.
Your annual membership fees and
contributions to our other fundraisers make
it possible for the Friends to finance many of
the library’s services, including children’s
programs, adult evening programs, and the
Museum Pass Program, to name just a few.
Our 2016 fundraisers included the Spring
and Fall Book Sales, our August Flatbread
Pizza night, and a hugely successful May
Baskets Raffle. We will share more details
of the Friends 2016 accomplishments with
you at the Annual Meeting on January 23.
If you haven’t already renewed your
membership for 2017, you may do so at the
Annual Meeting. Everyone who has
renewed for 2017, including all those
renewing at and since the Fall Book Sale, as
well as those renewing on the night of the
Jan. 23 meeting, will be entered into our
Annual Meeting raffle. Our prize this year
is a wine basket, including a five piece wine
accessory set, wine journal, bottle of wine
and a gift card to the Tuscan Kitchen.
One event you can mark on your calendars
is the Friends’ next fundraiser, the Spring
Book Sale, scheduled for April 28, 29 &
30 at the Burlington Public Library.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank
Barbara Parmet for her ongoing
management of the Friends’ Book Store.
No need for you to wait until the Spring
Book Sale! Books and audio-visual items
are frequently updated, all at very
reasonable prices, and all sales go towards
library programs. The Friends’ Book Store

is located at the front of the library (near the
exit), and it is open during regular library
hours. Just ask at the library’s front desk if
you have questions.
or online, you have a wonderful resource
available to you. We have books, movies,
audio, and music that will help you to
survive the cold and snow that a New
England winter brings. Hunker down with a
good book or movie, learn a craft,
experience a new musical group, or teach
yourself something new with books and
databases available to you. To access all of
this, all you need is a Burlington library card
in good standing. With your library card
and internet connection, you also have
access to our 24/7 library through our
website (burlingtonpubliclibrary.org).
Download, stream, research, book a pass,
place a hold, and much more at a time and
place convenient for you.
Finally, as a member of the Friends of the
Library, I encourage you to become an
active participant in the numerous
happenings of our organization. As a nonprofit organization, it is only with strong
membership involvement that The Friends
of the Library continues to be an effective
organization. We need and welcome new
volunteers to plan and run programs and
events, to serve on one of our committees, to
sponsor a museum pass, to provide
refreshments for a program, or to fill an
Executive Board position. Members are
always welcome to attend our monthly
Board Meetings, typically held at 6:30PM
on the first Monday of the month at the
library. Please consider taking an active role
with the Friends in support of our wonderful
Burlington Public Library. You can e-mail
us at [email protected] if you are
interested in helping out with any of these
opportunities.
This winter, plan to take advantage of the
programs that are offered for every age
group. The majority of the Summer
Reading, school vacation, and adult evening
programs are made possible through the
support of the Friends of the Library. Your
membership and your participation in the
Friends’ fundraisers are the best way to
guarantee the variety of options available.
Thank you so much for supporting the
Friends of the Library. We extend our best
wishes for a happy and productive new year
to all of you.
Your support also makes it possible for the
library to offer passes to almost two dozen
area museums and attractions, as many are
sponsored by the Friends. If you have ever
borrowed a pass, you know what a great
benefit this is. If you’ve never borrowed
one, you will want to check it out. We have
passes to great indoor activities that will
help you survive our long winter and also
fill school vacation weeks. Visit our website
to see a full list.

From the Desk of Lori Hodgson Library Director…
In March we will have our next “Burlington
Reads,” and in April we’ll hold the next
Friends’ Book Sale. As you’ll see
throughout this newsletter, the library has so
much to offer you throughout the winter. Be
sure to enjoy all that we offer!
As the New Year begins, why not make
yourself a resolution to visit the library more
often? Whether using the library in person

Burlington Reads occurs this year from late February through the end of
March. In the past, one title was chosen for the whole community to read.
Programs and book discussions all related to that one title. This year, we
are trying something new! Instead of one title, we have picked a theme. All of our programs and
titles revolve around this one theme: “Survival”. This theme-based plan gives you much more
flexibility since the choice of books you read remains with you. Read fiction, science fiction,
mystery, non-fiction, and/or biographies – it is your choice! Bookmarks with suggestions will be
available if you need some help choosing a book. Titles for adults, teens, and children are
included. Programs for all age groups will be centered on “Survival”. I hope you’re excited about
our community reads with the new twist!
Brochures will be available soon, so check the library or our website for more information.
If you or someone you know cannot get out to the Library due to temporary or permanent
disability, we can help bring the Library to you! We arrange for volunteers to deliver books,
large print books, audio-books to listen to, or films on DVD to homebound Burlington residents.
Contact Assistant Director, Michael Wick at 781-505-4985 or [email protected].
The Library is looking for anyone interested in displaying their artwork in our Art Gallery or for
any non-profit who wants to display items of local interest in our Lobby Cases. Contact the

January 23 - Friends of the Burlington Public Library Annual Meeting &
Nathalia Holt 'Rise of the Rocket Girls' Author Talk
Join us for the Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Burlington Public
Library followed by Nathalia Holt discussing her New York Times
bestselling book, Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled
Us from Missiles to the Moon to Mars.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that women have long been left out of history books.
Consider the elite group of young women who broke the boundaries of both gender and science
at NASA in the mid-twentieth century. For decades, the story of how these women transformed
rocket design and made space exploration possible—with little more than paper, pencil, and
mathematical prowess at their disposal—has remained little known and rarely told. In Rise of the
Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, From Missiles to the Moon to Mars, Nathalia Holt
sheds light on the women who helped transform NASA, taking readers through the revolutionary
changes of careers that spanned half a century.
Nathalia Holt is a science writer and author. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times,
The Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, Slate, Popular Science, and Time. She lives in Boston.
February 16 - An Evening With Tony Funches, Former Lead Singer of The

Gets In Your Eyes,' 'The Great Pretender,' and many more. Tony will
perform not only the songs of the Platters but many other timeless songs
from musical artists such as The Drifters, Nat King Cole, The
Temptations, and more!
