Free Day — Swakopmund
(B)
Today is a free day. Make your way into
town or choose one of the activities
available: Dolphin Cruises, Sky Diving and
everything in between.Highly recommended is the Sandwich Bay Harbour 4x4 Experience. There is also the Walvis Bay Golf
Club for those who would like an additional
round. Swakopmund - A rail terminus and
seaside resort surrounded by the Namib
Desert, the town was originally a port for
German South West Africa, but the harbour
silted up and was supplanted by Walvis
Bay after 1915. There is a strong German architectural influence in the town, which has
many Bavarian-style buildings. There are
salt, garnet, and uranium deposits in the
region, as well as a Chinese orbital tracking
station. Founded in 1892 by German settlers, Swakopmund was captured by South
Africa in 1915.
Scenic Flight to Sossusvlei

MON
(B,D)
Today we make our way to one of the
biggest drawcards in Namibia, the Oxidised
sand of the Namib Desert, The Namib
Naukluft National Park and the giant sand
dunes of Sossusvlei. This is one of the
world’s oldest deserts, offering over 130
million years of natural wonder, and the
highest sand dunes in the world! Famous
for Sossusvlei and Dooievlei and of course
the much photographed Dune 45. We recommend you leave behind all preconceptions of this desert – and bring lots of free
memory space on your cameras!
Often described as the ultimate flight in
Namibia, our flight leaves Swakopmund
and heads out over Sandwich Harbour.
Sandwich Harbour is a large saltwater
lagoon and home to an incredible variety
of bird life and one of southern Africa’s
greatest natural bird sanctuaries. Our flight
continues over the ‘sea of sand’. Soaring
along the Skeleton coastline we fly over
the shipwreck of a German passenger
liner, Eduard Bohlen. Stranded in 1909,
she now lies inland, for the entire world
as if she were sailing through the desert.
Shortly the shipwreck of the fishing trawler,
Shaunee, comes into sight. As we continue
southward we see the never-ending battle
for supremacy between the sand and the
sea, as we pass the “Lange Wand”, a 500
feet high dune rising from the waters edge.
Although the Namib is just as dry as the
Sahara, it has a much richer fauna and
flora, attracting researchers worldwide.
We continue our flight over Tsondabvlei. Shortly the awe-inspiring dunes at
Sossusvlei will come into sight. The colour
and shadows of these gigantic mountains
of sand change by the hour from beige to
rust-red to purple, dazzling the eye. We
come into land at Sossusvlei and transfer
to the Sossusvlei Lodge where we will have
dinner tonight.
