Study guide exercises --can you do it? The following exercises are due in your homework notebook on Thursday, March 12th. A. Reading Comprehension: Read the passage and then answer the questions in complete sentences. A Day At the Fair While my friend Ana was shopping for some jewelry, I saw a striped tent with a sign that said, “Fortune Teller.” Curious, I went inside to find out more. The tent was dark and disorienting. While my eyes were adjusting, a voice said, “I will predict your future for only $99.95.” I blinked and looked toward the corner. There was a woman with a hood over her face 2 looking into a crystal ball. “$99.95! Sorry, that’s too expensive,” I said. I was turning to leave when she calmly predicted, “You will find $85 on the ground outside the tent.” I thought she was totally crazy, so I left. But while I was walking out, I looked around on the ground. Sure enough, there was a dirty envelope in the mud. I opened it and found exactly $85! I thought about it. Maybe I should just keep the money. I could use some more fashionable shoes. But then I thought, if she knew about the money, maybe she knows some really important things about my future. I decided that knowing my future was worth more than nice shoes, so I went back in. The lady peered into her crystal ball. She kept her hood on and I couldn’t see her face, but her hands were really hairy. “You will travel to a far-off land,” she began. “You will see many things and go on many adventures. You will go hiking in mountains above the clouds. But you will not have enough sunscreen or water. You will get very badly sunburned and dehydrated. But it will be okay. Another hiker will find you. He will have sunglasses and a red hat--yes, I see a red hat--and he will give you water and help you back down the mountain. Later, you will discover that the water is magical. It will make you immortal. You will live forever and be very happy.” She finished her prediction and held out her hairy hand for the money. I counted out exactly $99.95. “No tip?” she asked. “Didn’t you like your future?” “It sounds like a lovely future,” I sighed. “But it’s too unbelievable, not realistic enough. I should be less gullible.” I went outside and found Ana. While I was wasting my money, she bought a gorgeous pair of silver earrings for only $9.95! She’s a more intelligent shopper than I am. Maybe she can help me find some less expensive shoes. 1. What did the author do while her friend was shopping? ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ 2. Did the author have enough money to get her fortune told? ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ 3. What did the lady predict the magical water will do? ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ 3 B. Underline all comparative or superlative forms in the following restaurant review. Four of the comparative/superlative forms in the paragraph are incorrect. Rewrite them correctly below. Louie’s Linguini is not expensive as the Pasta Palace , but the food is so much tastier! I might even say it has the best Italian food downtown, but I haven’t tried all the restaurants. I keep going back to Louie’s. The fettuccini alfredo is deliciouser and creamier than the mac and cheese, but the mac and cheese is more flavorful. The tagliatelle pomodoro, however, is the less fattening of the pastas. The pizzas are cheesier and have thicker crusts than the ones at Pasta Palace. Maybe Louie’s is less fancy the Palace , but you can wear comfortabler, baggier clothes, which is helpful when you are full of ravioli! 1. 3. 2. 4. C.
