The Immokalee community is a pocket of poverty in an area of extreme wealth. Of approximately 26,000 permanent residents, 40% live below the poverty level. There is an additional increase of 15,000 to 20,000 seasonal workers. One third of the population is under the age of 17. The level of educational attainment is also very low. 76% of the population has not finished high school. Almost 60% of the dwelling units in Immokalee are renter occupied and approximately 25% of all the housing in Immokalee is in need of repair or demolition. Collaboration Building is key to the success of the Immokalee Initiative. Over the past three years, the Foundation has created the following collaborations with more to come: With this in mind, in 2006, the Foundation created the Immokalee Initiative to bring resources to nonprofits serving Collier County’s most impoverished community. The Immokalee Initiative offers highly specialized services and educational resources to 30 member nonprofits involved in this project. In 2006, the Immokalee Initiative helped develop the community’s first Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan. Members of the collaboration established an Immokalee Area Coordination Center and local nonprofit organizations now serve as a communication network within the community to assist with the delivery of needed services. The Immokalee Housing Collaborative was developed in 2007 with four nonprofit housing agencies and the Collier County Housing Authority (a governmental agency). Its mission is to redevelop Immokalee one neighborhood at a time. The first neighborhood selected is the Eden Park. Each participating nonprofit organization has projects involving new construction and rehabilitation of affordable housing units. Members also created a Homeowner’s Manual for residents on home safety, maintenance and repairs. The Initiative already has identified that many of the nonprofit organizations being served are more effectively utilizing resources to build their infrastructure and strengthen community collaboration efforts. A more formal, independent assessment will begin in February. www.cfcollier.org 022-023 Immokokee.indd 23 The Foundation has also increased its ability to leverage financial resources for this community. In the past two years, $300,000 has been raised for education and training consultants, emergency assistance and affordable housing. The Immokalee Initiative will continue to work with nonprofits to ensure that community outcomes are clearly stated and programs are not duplicative. The Women’s Initiative facilitated a workshop at the Telford Center which was attended by over 40 institutions including county, state and federal agencies; law enforcement; hospitals, for profit caregivers, nonprofits, and faithbased communities. The outcome of the workshop was that all agreed there was a compelling need to create a central source of leadership and communication for all organizations that serve all seniors. Since that meeting, the Leadership Council on Aging has been meeting regularly and arrived at some key goals for our community: to initiate a community-wide resource assessment; to develop and operate a senior resource center; to create an online referral database; to implement a local hotline for social service; and to form a network for service providers. • A County-wide assessment of resources for seniors is underway in a private/public partnership with the Area Agency on Aging, the Agua Fund, and Florida Gulf Coast University. • A Listserv has been established for all organizations that serve all seniors. • A Collier County Parish Nursing Program is evolving through a partnership with Naples Community Hospital and a collaboration of interdenominational, faith-based communities. • Work is underway to establish a central resource of information and referrals which will develop into a Collier County 211 local hotline for all social services. • Plans are progressing, in partnership with the Senior Friendship Center, to establish a new Senior Resource Center— a one-stop resource for medical, mental, dental and vision care for low income seniors. This center will also be a central resource for information and referrals for all seniors. Loyal supporters of the Community Foundation since its beginning, and Founders of the Albrecht Legacy Society The Albrecht Legacy Society recognizes individuals who plan on including the Community Foundation in their estate plans. A simple addition to a person’s estate plan can launch a powerful legacy. By designating a specific dollar amount, percentage, or residual of one’s estate as a charitable bequest to the Community Foundation, estate taxes may be reduced. Theresa M. Anderson Fund William D.
