HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY CETL - Rockland Community College

CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING & LEARNING
r. James P. Purdy will propose that to prepare students for their college,
career, and civic endeavors, colleges must promote an understanding of
literacies that builds on students’ rich extracurricular, digital lives and
make literacies instruction the shared responsibility of the entire campus
community. After reviewing prevailing definitions of literacy and exigent
research about students’ literacy practices, he will share foundational
ideas for an encompassing approach to literacy. He will close by offering
six teaching strategies for enacting this approach.
