CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING & LEARNING r. James P. Purdy will propose that to prepare students for their college, career, and civic endeavors, colleges must promote an understanding of literacies that builds on students’ rich extracurricular, digital lives and make literacies instruction the shared responsibility of the entire campus community. After reviewing prevailing definitions of literacy and exigent research about students’ literacy practices, he will share foundational ideas for an encompassing approach to literacy. Purdy, PhD, is an Associate Professor of English/Writing Studies and Director of the University Writing Center at Duquesne University. He received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching and the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2016. In addition to publishing in numerous scholarly journals and edited collections, he has co-edited four books, most recently Making Space: Writing Instruction, Infrastructure, and Multiliteracies with Dànielle Nicole DeVoss (University of Michigan Press) and The Future Scholar: Researching and Teaching the Frameworks for Writing and Information Literacy (Information Today). His scholarship has won several awards including, with co-author Joyce R. Walker, the 2011 Ellen Nold Award for the Best Article in Computers and Composition Studies and the 2008 Kairos Best Webtext Award. With co-editor Randall McClure, he received the Silver Medal for Education in the Commentary/Theory Category at the 2014 Independent Publisher Book Awards for The New Digital Scholar: Exploring and Enriching the Research and Writing Practices of NextGen Students (Information Today) and the Bronze Medal for Education in the Commentary/Theory Category at the 2015 Independent Publisher Book Awards for The Next Digital Scholar: A Fresh Approach to the Common Core State Standards in Research and Writing (Information Today).
