Mission: Since 1870, the Humane Society
of Missouri has been dedicated to second
chances. We provide a safe and caring haven
to all animals in need—large and small—that
have been abused, neglected or abandoned.
Our mission is to end the cycle of abuse and
pet overpopulation through our rescue and
investigation efforts, spay/neuter programs
and educational classes. We are committed to
creating lasting relationships between people
and animals through our adoption programs
and our shelter pet training program. We
further support that bond by making available
world-class veterinary care.
The Humane Society of Missouri is an
independent, non-profit organization not
affiliated with any national animal welfare
organizations. We do not receive tax support or
United Way funding. We rely on the generosity
of individuals, corporations, foundations and
fees for services.
Mary Otto and her new best friend, Lucy
She Loves Lucy,
for the Second Time
After Mary Otto’s dog Lucy died, she was browsing the Humane
Society website with the idea of getting another dog. And there
she was: a dog that reminded Otto of Lucy…and her name was
also Lucy.
Otto high-tailed it to the Adoption Center and learned that the Lucy had arrived less than
24 hours before. A family with kids and two dogs was “downsizing.” The phrase stuck in
Otto’s mind as a perplexing reason to give up a pet.
Otto rated Lucy a ten on cuteness and friendliness and took her home. Her veterinarian
examined Lucy and declared her to be a good dog that just needed attention. “I told my vet
that I couldn’t understand why someone would give her up. My vet replied, ‘Oh, you’ll find
out.’ It still makes me laugh.”
“Right away, she was horrid about barking and pulling on the leash,” said Otto, who was
up to the challenge of improving both.
Lucy had plusses, too. “She did not get on furniture or beg people for food. Unfortunately,
my roommate ruined that good behavior right away.”
With coaxing and training the barking decreased. And, since Lucy now goes on long
hikes, she’s learning that the leash means good things worth her good behavior.
A wide variety of adoptable animals can be viewed anytime at www.hsmo.org.
Pet descriptions often include a current photo and, sometimes, a video. HSMO receives
animals every day and makes them available for adoption as soon as possible.
The website is updated hourly. Check regularly to find the pet that may soon become
your next best friend.

ANIMAL CRUELTY TASK FORCE
Overwhelmed Shelter
Sends Out S.O.S.
Texas County, December 19
Tex from Diana’s Grove Dog Rescue
Diana’s Grove Dog Rescue near Cabool, Mo. in Texas County sent an urgent plea to the
Humane Society of Missouri. A temporary funding crisis brought the organization to the
brink. They were within a few days of not being able to pay staff or buy food for the animals.
On December 19, 2016, the HSMO Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT) rescued
132 small-to-medium-sized dogs of various breeds. Several animals suffered from health issues
including Tex, whose injured eye needed surgery. Tex and 20 other dogs also were infected with
heartworms. Foster parents worked with the Humane Society to implement the months-long
treatment for heartworm recovery.
“Properly caring for large numbers of homeless animals is always challenging,” said Debbie
Hill, HSMO’s vice president of Operations. “We are glad we can be there to help out when
animals, and people, need us.”
Malnourished Dogs Suffering
in Horrific Conditions Benton County, January 5
Filthy, overcrowded living conditions. Matted fur.
Infected skin. Starvation.
Brioche,
Day of Rescue
An animal hoarder was keeping 31 Shih Tzus and toy breed dogs in filthy,
overcrowded conditions. Their matted fur not only harbored infection but
restricted movement and caused painful sores. Worst of all, they were starving
to death.
A concerned citizen called the Sheriff’s Office in Benton County and on
January 5, HSMO’s Animal Cruelty Task Force and a veterinarian investigated.
They found the bodies of nine dogs that
had already succumbed. The 31 survivors
were brought to safety.
Once suffering in an overcrowded, filthy
environment with feces embedded in their
fur, immediately they began recovering
in clean kennels with nutritious food,
clean water and comfy bedding. The dogs
received medical care and were scheduled
for surgery when necessary. As soon as
they recovered, they were made available
for adoption to begin happy lives.
The Humane Society of Missouri
Animal Cruelty Task Force recommended
to the Benton County Prosecutor that
animal abuse charges be filed against the
animals’ owner.
Brioche and 30 other small dogs were rescued from filthy, crowded living conditions
from a home in Benton County in west central Missouri. The long-haired dogs were
horribly matted with skin, ear and eye infections and internal and external parasites.

RESCUE UPDATE
HSMO Helps Pets
During Georgia’s
Hurricane Matthew
Atlanta Georgia, October
The team of Humane Society Animal Cruelty Investigators
wears another hat: rescuing and sheltering pets during disasters.
In October 2016, an-eight-member team responded to a plea
from the Atlanta Humane Society as it braced itself for
Hurricane Matthew.
The Disaster Response Team went prepared for large-scale
rescue including post-storm field work and swift water rescue,
bringing specialized vehicles and a rescue boat.
During its week-long stay, the team was put in charge of
sheltering pets when owners had to evacuate without their
dear companions. A few days later, a tired and grubby HSMO
team was rewarded by the sight of happy animals rejoined with
equally happy people.
After stops at animal shelters in Augusta and Atlanta, the
team headed back to St. Louis. To relieve overcrowding in those
shelters, partly due to the storm, the team returned with 32 Georgia
dogs looking for second chances.
“We are very proud we can respond quickly and competently
to help keep animals safe during disasters,” said Mike Perkins,
director of HSMO’s Animal Cruelty Task Force.
Your contributions enable the Animal Cruelty Task Force to be
there for the animals. Send donations to Development Office,
Humane Society of Missouri, 1201 Macklind Ave., St. Louis, MO
63110. Donate safely online at hsmo.org/donate/.
Hurricane Matthew
As Matchmaker
A Weather Channel producer tracking
Hurricane Matthew found her new dog
on television. The English Bull Terrier was
among the 32 dogs brought to St. Louis
from two overcrowded shelters in Georgia.
“Our news desk contacted HSMO for
footage of the rescue pups, and there
she was,” said Niki Budnick, whose family
already has a Bull Terrier named Apollo.
“I couldn’t help myself once I saw the
video.” Two weeks later she was driving
to St. Louis to bring Frances (Frankie) to
her forever home. Ironically, the dog
returned to Georgia.
Thus far, Frankie has starred on Facebook
Live with Budnick to share her story on the
air. The segment is posted on The Weather
Channel’s Facebook page (search Frankie).
Keep up with Frankie and Apollo on their
Instagram page @apolloandfrances.

Spring
Spring 2016
2017
During the November 2013 groundbreaking
for the Humane Society of Missouri’s Best
Buddy Pet Center and Animal Medical Center
of Mid-America, HSMO President Kathy Warnick
predicted, “This is the beginning of a new era
for animal welfare in St. Louis and the Bi-State
area. Never before has an animal welfare
organization had the kind of prominence
and presence this new Best Buddy Pet Center
will have.”
That vision has now become
a spectacular reality…
• a multi-level facility complete with a people-friendly
Adoption Center,
• state-of-the art animal rescue and rehabilitation programs
and facilities,
• our world-class Animal Medical Center of Mid-America,
• a classroom and interactive exhibits for humane education
programs for children and adults and,
• seminar, training and meeting areas for staff and the
community.
The new Best Buddy Pet Center illustrates how far the cause
of animal welfare has come and the heights to which it will soar
in the future. More people than ever will come to know that all
animals deserve respect and humane treatment. More people
than ever will come first to shelters to adopt their next best furry
friend. More people than ever will have affordable access to the
absolute best in veterinary care.
Most importantly, Best Buddy Pet Center will give second
chances to thousands more abused, neglected and abandoned
pets uniting them with the people who will give them loving
forever homes.

Generous Donors and
Volunteers are the
Building’s Foundation
Much vision, discussion, planning and attention
to detail go into a project as huge as HSMO’s
new Best Buddy Center. However, without the
generosity of thousands of individual, corporate
and foundation donors to HSMO’s New Horizons
Campaign to build the Center, the vision never
would have become reality.
“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the commitment and
support of HSMO’s Board of Directors; the New Horizons
Campaign Committee, led by Pam Nicholson, Ted Levis
and Frank Steeves; and to the expertise and dedication
of our volunteer Project Manager George Tomazi,” said
Kathy Warnick, president of the Humane Society of
Missouri. “Despite the maxim that ‘no one is irreplaceable’,
this project would not have happened without the
thousands of hours they all devoted to it.”
More than $16 million was donated to the New Horizons
Campaign making it the largest capital fundraising effort
in HSMO’s history. Warnick commented, “It is very
heartening that our campaign donors shared the vision
of transforming animal welfare in St. Louis and Missouri
to benefit so many more animals and the people who love
and care for them. Their support meant that no operating
funds for our ongoing animal rescue, rehabilitation, adoption
and education programs were used for this project.”
George Tomazi
Long-time HSMO Board member
George Tomazi has spent
countless hours over the years
providing his invaluable expertise
as volunteer project manager for
many HSMO building projects
including HSMO’s new Best Buddy
Pet Center in Maryland Heights,
HSMO’s Headquarters on Macklind
Avenue, Longmeadow Rescue
Ranch, the Kuehner Center in
Chesterfield Valley, and improvements to the Westport Area
Center. We are forever indebted to him!
HSMO Auxiliary
Volunteer, former board member
and founder of the HSMO Auxiliary
Dorie Wilner and her husband Bert
spent half a century fund raising
for HSMO, especially for the
“Branch” as our Westport Area
Center was fondly called. “We lost
a dear friend when Dorie died last
year,” said HSMO President Kathy
Warnick. “It was her fondest wish that we build this new
center. We are very sad she’s not here for our celebration,
but know her spirit lives on in every animal we help.”
We commend Dorie and her fellow HSMO Auxiliary
members for their long-time dedication to our cause and
recognize the significant difference they have made toward
advancing animal welfare in St. Louis.

Dental Health:
Early Prevention
is Key
Eighty-five percent of dogs and cats have dental disease by the time
they are three years old. And just because your pet’s teeth look okay,
doesn’t mean there aren’t problems lurking under the gum line.
At the Animal Medical Center of Mid-America,
dental health is taken very seriously—and for
good reason. Did you know that dental disease
can affect more than just your pet’s mouth? It
could lead to other serious health problems like
lung, heart, and kidney disease. By the time your
pet is just three years old, he or she will probably
start to show signs of dental disease, so early
prevention is key.
AMCMA and the American Animal Hospital Association
(AAHA) recommend that dental cleanings under general
anesthesia should take place every year once your cat or small
breed dog is one year old and every year for large breed dogs
when they are two years of age.
You may wonder why full anesthesia is used for dental
cleanings, and you may have even heard of anesthesia-free dental
cleanings. Anesthesia, which is recommended by AMCMA
and AAHA, allows veterinarians and technicians to effectively
remove tarter and to clean below the gum line, where periodontal
disease begins. Without anesthesia, pets must be restrained and
incur greater stress and pain than those who are sedated.
What can you expect with a dental procedure at AMCMA?
First, you will set up an appointment for a dental consultation
or the veterinarian will discuss recommendations during your
pet’s annual check-up. This will determine the extent of the
periodontal disease, if any, and your pet’s “dental grade.” Blood
work may be recommended to rule out any other underlying
medical conditions prior to going under anesthesia.
Once the veterinarian determines the dental grade and
what type of cleaning your pet needs, you can schedule an
appointment at one of our three convenient locations. Your
veterinarian may recommend dental X-rays in our office to detect
what can’t be seen through the examination or to determine if
tooth extractions are necessary.
During the procedure, while your pet is under anesthesia, his
heart rate and respiration will be continually monitored, and he
will be placed on a heating pad to maintain his body temperature.
His teeth will be scaled with an ultrasonic instrument to remove
calculus and plaque, and then they will be polished with a special
paste that smooths out scratches to the tooth enamel. Fluoride
treatment and/or a barrier sealant will help make the teeth
stronger and will discourage development of more plaque.

Horses, Mules Rescued
from Severe Neglect
Cinder after
Cinder day of rescue
Aria
day of rescue
Aria after
In mid-October, the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty
Task Force (ACT) in cooperation the Sullivan County Sheriff’s
Office rescued five severely malnourished horses and three mules
from a property outside of Milan, Mo. One of the horses also
suffered from a deep, infected shoulder wound.
The animals were living on one acre of barren land with no food
and only filthy water available when ACT investigators visited the
property in the summer. ACT tried to no avail to work with the
owner to improve conditions for the animals. Subsequently, the
sheriff obtained a warrant for their removal and the animals were
taken to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch.
With proper veterinary care and nutrition, just four months
later, one mule and two of the horses have fully recovered and
been adopted; the remaining equine are in training and will soon
be available for adoption.
“Allowing animals to slowly
starve to death is the very definition
of cruelty,” said Kathy Warnick,
president of the Humane Society of
Missouri and Longmeadow Rescue
Ranch. “We are recommending
prosecution to the fullest extent of
the law and are gratified we can give
these animals the second chances
they so desperately deserve.”
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Please Welcome
Sonny & Cher
The Barn Buddy bunch has added two stars: rooster
Sonny and hen Cher. When Sonny was purchased by
a family, they were told he was female but his first
“cock-a-doodle-do” disproved the claim. Where they
live, they can’t have roosters so he joined the ranch.
Cher was purchased as a chick around Easter and,
as is so often the case, the owner couldn’t provide
long-term care. Don’t worry—we got you, babes.

Barn Buddy sponsorships make great Mother’s Day, grandparent,
birthday and holiday gifts. And, your sponsorship helps support
the rescued animals at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. To sponsor
rescued Barn Buddies like Sonny and Cher, call ( 314 ) 951-1542
or visit longmeadowrescueranch.org. To meet Sonny and Cher,
you can visit Longmeadow Rescue Ranch any Friday
noon to 3 p.m. or Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
