SEW WHAT’S NEW April 2012 Page 1 April 2012 Did you know that April means Aphrodite's month. Aphrodite is a Greek goddess of love and beauty. Seems appropriate for quilters who are very loving people and makers of beautiful quilts! Besides April Fool’s Day, this year April celebrates Passover, Easter, and Earth Day. Passover and Easter are good occasions to use quilts and Earth Day would be a great day to use recycled fabric in your quilt! Hope your holidays are filled with love and beauty! I’m looking forward to our speaker this month. Diane Steele will be talking about Round Robins, Block Exchanges, and Challenges! If you get inspired, please step up and offer to organize a special event! It’s always fun to have different options! As we discussed last month, the reveal for the Ostrich Challenge will be at the June meeting. Here’s our schedule: 1) an orphan block with 2) a border of TRIANGLES, 3) a second border of WAVES or CURVES, 4) a row of STRIPES, 5) a plain border AND/OR a border of squares, and 6) a round of appliqué (any kind, any amount). For #7, make a border that incorporates a motif, a shape, or a fabric from the center block. Feel free to interpret this however you desire. I’m going to give you #8 now – a plain border – just in case you want to combine #7 and #8 in some creative way. Have fun! See you soon! Darlene Piché ([email protected]) SEW WHAT’S NEW Page 2 April 2012 Programs APRIL 2012 - DIANE STEELE “ROUND ROBINS, BLOCK EXCHANGES AND CHALLENGES” Dianne Steele has been quilting for 15 years, and for the last 10, her quilting quest has become an all-consuming passion. She is known to some family members as the “The Rabid Quilter”. She feels closest to traditional quilts and has used those techniques giving her a good base to expand her quilting to what she calls ‘artsy’ endeavors. Her presentation will show how her participation with friends in both large and small guilds has influenced and resulted in lots of shared quilts. Many of these are through working with friends on round-robins, block exchanges and challenges. She believes quilting with friends and taking challenges have helped all concerned to get out of their comfort zone. Her passion is to excite quilters to grow in quilting knowledge and expertise when testing different techniques, patterns and color-ways. Library Just a friendly reminder to bring your borrowed books back. And, if anyone did any major cleaning and has any magazines to donate, that would be great. The magazine sales are our source of income to add new books to the library. I look forward to seeing everyone soon! Kim Stevenson Fabric Exchange For the fat quarter exchange, please use good quality fabric. A fat quarter measures 18” x 22”. If you want, you can buy ½ yd of fabric and cut it down the fold. Be sure that the fold is right on center. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either Janet or Deb. April- yellow and blue May- flowers Enjoy! Wow many of you came through big time with Christmas fabric. Mary Lewis has completed 34 potholders and I have been working on table runners and toppers count is about 12 in some order of assembly. Thanks to our quilters Deb, Diana and Sharon Ainsworth who are always so willing to help out with quilting. We have kits available for blocks and runners. How can you help and contribute to ways and means? Make an apron (doesn't need to be Christmas), or table runner, table topper, wine bag, or small wall hanging for the boutique. Donate Christmas fabric or batting to Ways and Means. Thanks for all your help. May this April shower you with lots of inspiration to quilt, be it Block of the Month or other projects. It’s what we do! Jane Katherine Richard won the BOM black & white log cabin blocks last month. What a joy for a new member to get! Sure hope you’re enjoying them Jane. Mary Lewis provided the block kits that were at the meeting. If you bought a kit, you’ll have had 3 different blocks. A small, uneven 9-patch in 30’s fabrics; a large Old Windmill block in 30’s fabric and a bonus block to do with what you wish. Hmmmm….she put Christmas fabrics in the kit, wonder what she wants us to do with those? Mary said there are to be 2 winners chosen. One for the small block sets, and the other winner for the large blocks. Sharon Ainsworth had already put together her BOM kits for this month’s meeting. She made a Disappearing 9-patch kit. You will see there are 2 blocks to sew together; one for the winner and one for Sharon. The fabrics are lovely!!! They’ll make some wonderful blocks. I won’t be at the April meeting – I’ll be in Virginia with my sisters and brother for a reunion. Wonder what kind of quilt shops I can find there? Nevertheless, I’ll have a terrific time. Doris will be at the meeting, with next year’s BOM girl, Jill Elhard. Have fun ladies!! Please, if you ever have any questions be sure to call or email us. Our membership is made up of new quilters, old quilters and people who just appreciate the fabric arts. If you are new to quilting and thought quilt guilds were only for experienced quilters, please think again. Our meetings offer an opportunity to learn from each other and to be challenged to try new things. Each meeting provides opportunities to hear from talented guests in the quilting industry and identifies ways you can support your community through the making and giving of quilts to the needy. Meetings are usually held on the second Saturday, September through June. Join the guild for $35, renew your membership for $30 or come as a guest for $5.
