Our Band & Orchestra Discovers the Symphony

Longfellow’s 4 and 5 Grade Chamber Orchestra and Symphonic
Band will attend their first field trip this week at Jones Hall. The
musicians will discover connections between music, visual arts and

creative writing with the Houston Symphony on October 3 and 4 .
Our aspiring artists will listen to the full symphony play such works as
Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 and Debussy’s Nocturnes while
discovering similarities between composing and writing. 
Pershing Middle School & Longfellow Elementary
Collaborate at the Annual “Hauntcert”

On October 23 , the Chamber Orchestra will be performing a
collaborative concert with Pershing Middle School’s top Orchestra.
The groups have prepared three selections that they will play
together. All students will dress in their favorite “Hauntcert”
costumes and will play “Themes from Harry Potter” and the
Longfellow tradition, “Rhythm ‘N Blues”. The Longfellow Chamber
Orchestra will even recognize the Longfellow Alumni who now are in
Pershing’s Chamber Group. Come and join in the festivities at
6:30pm in the Pershing Auditorium. 
Kinder and First Grade Instrumental Workshop

On October 26 , the 4 and 5 grade Orchestra and Band students
will lead a FIRST EVER student instrumental workshop at 2:20pm for
Kindergarten and First Grade. They will speak and perform as they
demonstrate important skills needed to be an instrumentalist! 
Fall Carnival
Look out for exciting performances from our fabulous fine art
performers at Longfellow’s Annual Fall Carnival on Saturday, October

27 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. There will be games, prizes, treats, live
entertainment and LOTS OF FUN! 
Time: 3:30 to 4:30 after school.
Note: If you pick your child up after enrichment, please be
prompt.
Days:
Art: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
Band: Monday (brass), Wednesday (woodwind), Friday
(symphonic)
Dance: Tuesday, Thursday
Keyboard: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
Orchestra: Tuesday (as needed), Thursday (chamber)
As stated in the contract, to remain in enrichment for the 20122013 year, students:
1. Must maintain passing grades and an “S”/”E” in conduct for all
subjects.
2. Cannot be needed for academic after school tutorials the same
day as enrichment.
3. Commit to performing at every performance.
4. Wear the required dress code for every performance.
5. Cannot be released early from enrichment for any reason other
than a documented appointment or emergency.
6. Should be picked up no later than 4:40 pm after enrichment, if
a car rider.
7. Be present at every enrichment class. Students who have
more than three unexcused absences from enrichment are
subject to suspension or dismissal from the enrichment
group.
Failure to adhere to the policies and procedures outlined above
could result in suspension or dismissal from enrichment.

A reminder that magnet fees are due in 2 through 5 grade for
Chess Club Coming Soon!
the following classes:
Mr. Berry, our multi-talented Art Instructor, will be starting a Chess

club on Monday, October 15 for 2 -5 grade students. Please email
at [email protected] or call at 713-295-5268 if you are
interested in participating. If there is high enough demand for the
class, he will add an additional class on Fridays. There is a one time
fee of $50.00. The last chess class is Monday, March 4, 2013. 
Art Enrichment: $50
Band: $50
Dance: $25 + additional $25 for enrichment students
Orchestra: $50
Please pay your magnet fees, if you haven’t done so already.
