GUIDELINES
PURPOSE:
The Marian Anderson AwardStudy-Grant Program isfounded inthe belief that theearly pursuit of artisticexcellence
magnifies thepossibility ofindividual achievement. Importantly andina larger sense,thatpursuitenhances boththe
individualandourbroadercultureinfar-reachingandimmeasurableways.
Thepurpose oftheArtStudy-Grant istoprovide fundamentalsupport tohighlytalented youngartists.Support is
extendedwiththeunderstandingthatthestudentisconsideringa professionalcareerandshowsclearpromiseof
attainingthatgoal.It is notexpectedthatthestudentartistwillmakethetransitiontoprofessionalstatusthrough
thesupportofthisgrant.Rather,thegrantwillbe madetosupportthestudentsastheybeginworkingtowarda
professionalcareer,whilelesseningthefinancialburdenofthatchoice.
ELIGIBILITY:
TheStudy-Grant Program isopentoyoungaspiringartistswhodemonstrate significant talent andcommitment,
whomeetALLofthefollowingentrancerequirements.
Asit isa centralconsiderationintheProgram’sdecisiontooffera grant,theapplicantmustdemonstratefinancial
need by including aFiscalYear2015TaxReturn.
Theapplicantmustbe a legalresidentinoneofthefollowingPhiladelphiaareacounties:
•PENNSYLVANIA: Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia
•NEWJERSEY:CamdenorGloucester
•DELAWARE: New Castle
Theapplicantmustbe a studentinapublicorprivatehighschoolorjuniorhighschool.Studentswhohavebegun
collegeoruniversity studieswillnotbe considered.
Requestsforsupportmaybe submittedannually.Receiptofagrantdoesnotlimittherecipient fromongoing
requests;however,additionalrequestscannotbe submitteduntiloneyearhaspassedsincethepreviousgrantwas
received.Intheeventthatadditionalsupportis requested,a briefsummaryoftheworksupportbythepreviousgrant
mustbesubmittedwitha letterofongoingsupportfromthenominatingteacher/coach/mentor.
MAKIN G A REQUEST:
Grantrequestsshouldbe madeintheformofa completedapplicationanda coverletterdetailingthetypeofexpense
subsidization neededandtheamountrequested.Requests rangefrom$500to$2,500,andan interviewmaybe
requestedpriortoprovidinga grant.Thereisno restrictionon thefinancialneedthegrantwilladdress.Forexample,
instruction,coaching,instrumentrental,travelorsubsistenceareallrealcoststhatthegrantmaysupport.However,
therequestmustexplainhowthegrantwillsupportthestudent’sabilitytopursuehis orherartisticdevelopment and/
orhowthegrantfundswillbe usedtosupportexpensesthatthestudentorthestudent’sfamilyis unabletobearoris
bearingwithdifficulty.

Thenatureandamountoftherequest willhelpdeterminehowa grantwillbe disbursed.Thiscanbe discussedduring
theinterview,if oneis scheduledorwithstaffattheMarianAndersonAwardofficeoncethegrantdecisionhasbeen
made.Grantrecipientswillbe askedtodocumentanysingleexpenseof$500ormore.Thiscanbe intheformofa
receiptorinvoice.

FortheCoverLetter,thestudentshoulddescribethepurposeforwhichtheStudy-Grant isrequestedandthe
amountoftherequest.Usea fontof10ptorgreateranddo notexceedtwopages.
NOMINATION LETTER
Includea signedletterofnominationfroma professionalteacher,coach,ormentorattestingtothetalentand
commitmentofthestudentmakingtherequest.
FISCALOVERSIGHTLETTER
Includea letterfromanadult(allgrantrecipientswillbeminors)whowillprovideoversightofthegrantifthat
personis differentfromtheteacher,coach,ormentor.Thisis thecontactpersontowhomthegrantwillbesent.
FISCALYEAR2015TAXRETURN
CONSECUTIVEGRANTREPORT
If youreceiveda grantin 2015,youarerequiredtoincludea letterfromyour2015nominatordetailingthefollowing:
1.Developmentalgainsthathavebeenachievedsincethepreviousgrantwasreceived
2. Adescriptionofhowthefundswereusedby theteacher,coach,ormentorrecommendingthegrant.
Pleasenote- If the2015nominationis comingfromthesameprofessionalteacher,coach,ormentor,thiscanbe
includedinthenominationletter.If the2015nominatoris notavailablethislettershouldbecompletedbytheadult
whowillprovidefinancialoversightofthegrant.Previousgrantees areencouragedtocontacttheAwardofficeprior
tothesubmissionofa secondrequest.
OPTIONALMATERIALS
Applicants areencouraged but not obliged to include materials that further demonstrate thecurrent levelof his or
herartistic development. These mayinclude tapes, videos, CDs,reviews, or writing samples. Materials submitted in
supportofa requestwillnotbereturned.
