October 24, 2011 Binomial Distributions (8.3) As a special promotion for its 20-ounce bottles of soda, a soft drink company printed a message on the inside of each cap. Some of the caps said “Please try again,” while others said “You’re a winner!” The company advertised the promotion with the slogan “1 in 6 wins a prize.” Assume that the company is telling the truth and that each bottle of soda has a 1/6 chance of having a cap that says “You’re a winner!” Suppose that Alan and five of his friends—Bart, Chloe, Delores, Ed, and Frankie—each buy one 20-ounce bottle. What’s the probability that one of them wins a prize? This situation is called a Binary Setting because of the following reasons: 1) Binary = The possible outcomes are classified as either "success" or "failure". 2) Independent = Trials in a binary setting must be independent of each other 3) Number = the number of trials must be fixed in advance 4) Success = the probability for success on each trial must be the same October 24, 2011 October 24, 2011 October 24, 2011 October 24, 2011 October 24, 2011 October 24, 2011 October 24, 2011
