Binomial Distributions (8.3)
As a special promotion for its 20-ounce bottles of soda, a soft drink company
printed a message on the inside of each cap. Some of the caps said “Please try
again,” while others said “You’re a winner!” The company advertised the
promotion with the slogan “1 in 6 wins a prize.” Assume that the company is
telling the truth and that each bottle of soda has a 1/6 chance of having a cap that
says “You’re a winner!” Suppose that Alan and five of his friends—Bart, Chloe,
Delores, Ed, and Frankie—each buy one 20-ounce bottle. What’s the probability
that one of them wins a prize?
This situation is called a Binary Setting because of the following reasons:
1) Binary = The possible outcomes are classified as either "success" or "failure".
2) Independent = Trials in a binary setting must be independent of each other
3) Number = the number of trials must be fixed in advance
4) Success = the probability for success on each trial must be the same
