Family Link Definition FORTITUDE is the virtue that enables us to act bravely in the face of trouble and fear. Scripture Reference Fortitude Joshua 1:9 - “Be strong and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord, your God, is with you wherever you go.” Reflection: When threatened by his nemesis, Bluto, the cartoon character, Popeye, had a sure-fire solution. Pulling a can from his shirt, he gulped a mouthful of spinach and resolved the confrontation with a one-two punch. The notion of fortitude as instantly accessible is tantalizing but unrealistic. As a virtue, fortitude builds incrementally. No wonder its synonyms include “endurance” and “resilience.” In addition, the enemies we face are often internal, making them all the trickier to withstand. Consider the inner demons draining our souls and leaving us weak-kneed and vulnerable. We don’t fight them with fists, but with intense soul work that includes prayer, discipline, and honest self-reflection. Fortitude helps us to remain firm in our faith. Stellar models of this virtue are less like Popeye and more like Saint Charles Lwanga and his fellow martyrs from Uganda. When confronted by a bully-king and commanded to renounce their faith in Christ, they drew upon the quiet strength that is the heart of fortitude. Knowing their powerlessness in the face of tyranny, faith was their “can of spinach,” their stronghold, and their source of both consolation and challenge. It cost them their lives, but preserved their integrity and solidified their hope in a faith standing stronger than any bully’s threat. Family Activity: Watch a family film together and engage your family in a discussion about the way the characters displayed fortitude. Look for behaviors and decisions showing how they held to their beliefs, even if it meant withstanding ridicule or ouster from a group. Use the discussion to consider the kinds of challenges to your faith requiring fortitude. Identify ways to keep your faith strong, such as praying and going to Mass together, offering each other support and encouragement, and reading stories of the saints and other witnesses to the Catholic faith. Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me fortitude to remain strong in my faith and to hold fast to trust and hope in you. Amen.
