Alison Dover
Honors Specialization Globalization Studies, Minor Spanish
Language & Linguistics, 2013
I came to Global Studies as a mature student
after working for many years in social services
in Toronto and southwestern Ontario. I wanted
to know more about the global actors and power
structures that shape our lives, and I learned
that in spades in CGS. I adored the Huron
experience and felt passionate about the issues
we engaged with. I particularly fell in love with
critical theory, a brilliant body of progressive
thought that seeks to push us beyond the
current paradigms. The small professor-tostudent ratios in CGS proved an excellent
motivator to give my best effort, and I found
other students to be uniquely politically aware
and academically focused. People in the
program were there because they wanted to be
there, professors and students alike. I also thoroughly enjoyed my Minor in Spanish and
Linguistics, achieved an excellent working proficiency in the language, and my learning
about the structure of language has improved my English as well.
Upon graduating, I continued to Western Law, where I have focused on labour law,
legal theory, constitutional law, and human rights. I currently work as a Research
Assistant in labour and human rights law to Professor Michael Lynk. I will begin my
final year of law school in September 2015, and have just accepted articles that involve a
rotation between a union side labour law firm and working in house at a union - my
dream job!
