Mission Statement
It is the purpose of the Calgary APTA Festival to bring together
piano enthusiasts of all levels and in all styles of playing to share
and enjoy music. It is for this reason that classes are noncompetitive.
It is the commitment of this festival that each performer will
receive an adjudication by a leading clinician in piano music to
aid them in moving forward in their learning experience.
It is the hope of this festival that students, teachers and music
lovers enrich their musical skills and knowledge each time they
participate.
2017 Festival
The Showcase Concert will be Saturday May 13.
The continued goal of the festival is to provide an opportunity for
students to play in a performance atmosphere that is encouraging
and constructive. All participants will receive a certificate and a
written adjudication.

Calgary APTA Festival 2017
Welcome to the 21st annual Calgary APTA Festival. Through the past years this festival has
grown to a staple of the local music scene. Performers of all ages and abilities are welcome to
come and share their exploration of piano music. This event is created and supported by the
local members of the Alberta Piano Teachers’ Association to provide a comfortable and
nourishing atmosphere for our musicians. Because it is run by volunteers, it is with gratitude
that we recognize the following people:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Lisa Kiernan – registration, scheduling, concert organization
Denisa Calcan – registration design, advertising design
Charlotte Jacobson – piano donation, volunteer scheduling
Stephanie Orr – scheduling
Dara Fensky – scheduling, concert reception
Rob Whitworth - programme
Kay Alexander – musical games, certificates, host
As well, we thank the Renfrew Baptist Church for their long time support and willing
cooperation in all that we do. Finally thank you to St. John’s Music for providing the pianos on
which our participants perform. It is because of everyone’s contribution that this festival has
become a success.

About Our Adjudicators
Sabrina’s path to and ultimate realization of
her passion for music was circuitous. Unlike most
musicians who have been immersed in musical
training from a very young age, she began her
musical journey at the age of 16. However, she
was able to quickly develop her technical skills
and develop her passion and love of music as a
late beginner.
Joan Bell
Joan Bell holds a Bachelor of Music Degree
from the University of Toronto, where she studied
piano performance with Alberto Guerrero. In
addition, she holds both the LRSM and ARCT
Diplomas in Piano performance, which she earned
as a teenager. Joan Bell also has a Bachelor of
Education and an M.A. in English, both from the
University of Calgary. She has also studied organ
performance and choral conducting at the Royal
School of Church Music in London, England, and
was for many years the organist of Scarboro
United Church, Calgary.
As a professional music teacher, Sabrina has
combined her own expansive experiences as a late
beginner and the barriers she overcame with the
skills and education gained from the University of
Alberta’s piano pedagogy program to instruct and
inspire a diverse range of students in Calgary and
Edmonton, Alberta. With wide experience both as
a performing soloist and chamber musician, as
well as a performance evaluator, Sabrina vision is
to instill a sense of musical appreciation in her
students and fellow musicians.
Joan Bell has been teaching piano for many
years, and her students have earned many Silver
and Gold Medals from the Royal Conservatory of
Music for the highest marks in Alberta in their
respective grades, many scholarships, medals, and
awards in the Calgary Kiwanis Festival, and have
placed first in the National Canadian Music
Competition, open to students from across
Canada.
Outside of music, Sabrina is an avid
kickboxer and badminton player and enjoys sushi
as her favourite food.
Ms. Bell maintains a very busy studio in
Calgary, where she teaches students from the
beginner to post-ARCT levels. She has also been
a Branch Teacher for Mount Royal Conservatory.
She is committed to the concept that one of the
purposes of teaching music is to instill in students
a life-long love of music, both as performers and
listeners. Ms. Bell is also keenly interested in
reading, hiking in the mountains, and in
gardening.
Doreen Laing
Doreen Laing holds an ARCT from the Royal
Conservatory of Music and Permanent
Professional Certification in the American Music
Teachers Association. A Certified Senior
Examiner for the College of Examiners – Royal
Conservatory of Music, she is also a Certified
Teacher and representative of the Kelly Kirby
Kindergarten Piano Method and conducts teacher
workshops in this method. Doreen has been active
with ARMTA and on the Executive of APTA since
its inception. She has adjudicated festivals and
presented workshops in numerous centres across
Canada and the U.S. In addition to teaching at
Mount Royal University and Medicine Hat
College Doreen has taught privately in Canada
and the United States throughout her career. She
Sabrina Fok
Sabrina has been teaching piano since 2010.
She received both a Bachelor’s Degree in applied
music and a Master’s Degree in piano pedagogy
from the University of Alberta under the tutelage
of Jacques Desprès, Patricia Tao, Janet Scott Hoyt
and Milton Schlosser.
4
has attended numerous World Piano Pedagogy
Conferences and workshops/masterclasses
conducted by Jon Kimura Parker, Marek
Jablonski, John Perry, Marvin Blickenstaff,
Seymour Bernstein, and Anton Kuerti. Many of
Mrs. Laing’s students are award winners,
including three of whom were presented with
national scholarships.
Notation. He is the winner of the 2013 Jack
Friedenberg Memorial Scholarship for pianists,
and in 2015 was nominated for Outstanding Actor
in a Play by the Calgary Theatre Critics’ Awards
for his work in the world premiere of Butcher by
Governor General Award-winning playwright
Nicolas Billon.
Nancie Redekop
Several of her music articles have been
published in Canada and the United States. She
continues to teach a large private piano class
including theory and pedagogy. Duets, trios, and
quartets are always an enjoyable part of her
classes and this past Christmas she had students
perform a Four-Piano Quartet (electronic) in her
Christmas recital.
Nancie is a teacher, performer, adjudicator,
and life-long piano enthusiast. She holds ARCT
Diplomas in Performance and Teaching, A.M.U.S.
Diploma, and has been a member of the Alberta
Registered Music Teachers’ Association since
1990. Nancie has taught the Yamaha and Music
for Young Children group programs, as well as
private piano, organ, and theory lessons. From
1997 to 2009, she was the music teacher for the
Music, Drama, Movement, and Art camp for the
Calgary Arts Summer School Association. For
many years she has been a member of Piano
Diploma Association and Music Coterie/ Piano
Workshop in Calgary and enjoys performing solo
and ensemble repertoire.
Eric Nyland
A pianist (ARCT, LRCM) and actor (BFA,
CAEA), Eric serves on the Executive Committee
of the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’
Association (Calgary Branch) and on the
Organizing Committee for Classical Revolution
Calgary. He is the musical director for the theatre
improvisation company The Kinkonauts and for
the long-form theater improvisation duo One
Lions (winner, Best Show at Vancouver
International Improv Festival). He has held solo
concerts in Edmonton and Calgary, performing
through the National Music Centre’s Street
Sounds series and the Pro Arts Society, as well as
appearing as soloist in Beethoven’s First Piano
Concerto for the inaugural concert of the Calgary
Arts Orchestra. In addition to running a private
teaching studio, Eric works as a piano adjudicator
for student festivals and has developed two
courses for the Conservatory at Mount Royal
University: Introductory Keyboard for Adults:
Play-by-Ear/Improvisation, and Reading Standard
Nancie has been an adjudicator for the
Alberta Piano Teachers Association and the
Suzuki Festival at Mount Royal University and
has given workshops for various groups in the
Calgary area.
During the 1970s, Nancie and her husband,
Hal toured western Canada and the northern
United States with their night-club band. After
settling in Calgary, their involvement in music
centred around their “home” church, as well as
being guest soloists at other area churches.
She is committed to the concept that one of
the purposes of teaching is to instil in students a
lifelong love of music, both as performer and
listener.

Musical Games
This year the Musical Games were based on TV game shows. We began with a hunt for the ‘Answers’
throughout the building. Once we reassembled we played Family Feud for fun and prizes. After a snack
break we moved on to Wheel of Fortune. Thanks to all the kids who came to play with us, it was a lot of
fun! We would also like to gratefully acknowledge the donations of the following corporate sponsors who
provided the prizes.
