Cause and Effect Passage TEACHER’S GUIDE
What about this ?
Here is the question, listen for the clues:
Now, say you have an old pipe in the bathroom and it has a small crack
causing it to leak one pint of water every hour.
In 24 hours (one day), how many quarts of water would be wasted?
Together, let’s do the math: 24 hours times one pint of water an hour
gives us 24 pints of water. That’s simple.
Now how many quarts of water is that?
If two pints make a quart, then 24 pints of water divided by 2 equals 12
quarts of water. That’s a lot of precious drinking water being wasted.
Now, can you take this a step further? Can you tell how many gallons
are wasted in one day? We know that four quarts equals one gallon, and
if we divide 12 quarts by 4. How many gallons of water is wasted?
You’re right! Three gallons.
Un-pause to play Audio Track “Cause and Effect Passage”
What is the cause of the leak? A pipe.
Ok, what caused the pipe to leak? It had a small crack.
Why did it crack? It was old.
What might happen if the leak is fixed? We wouldn’t waste water.
And now the best part;
What is the effect of not wasting water?
We conserve water.
So please check the pipes around your house and let an adult know if
you find any leaks. Conserving water helps everybody and everything
that lives in our community. That’s and .
