Eternal Life: Bradstreet
Bradstreet believed that everything important is in eternal life, all worldly cares would soon fade
away.
1
“ Then while we live, in love let's so persever
That when we live no more, we may live ever.”
Bradstreet is saying that she and her husband loved each other so much that they will
continue to live on through their love after they have died.
2
“ The world no longer let me Love,
My hope and Treasure lyes Above.”
Bradstreet says that the human world that she lives in has no more value to her and
everything important “lyes Above”, or is in Heaven now.

Eternal Life: Edwards
“And now you have an extraordinary opportunity, a day wherein Christ has
thrown the door of mercy wide open, and stands in the door calling and crying
with a loud voice to poor sinners; a day wherein many are flocking to him, and
pressing into the kingdom of God.”
Edwards is saying that, to the people that still have a chance to be “born again”, you need to
make the right choice in time. God will be waiting for you with the doors of mercy wide open..

God’s Relation to People: Bradstreet
1
“
Thou hast an house on high erect
Fram'd by that mighty Architect,
With glory richly furnished,
Stands permanent tho' this bee fled.
It's purchased, and paid for too
By him who hath enough to doe.”
Bradstreet is saying that God has a home ready for her in Heaven, furnished in glory. She
doesn’t have to do anything special to get there, just continue to live the rest of her life following
him.

God’s Relation to People: Edwards
“Thus all you that never passed under a great change of heart, by the
mighty power of the Spirit of God upon your souls; all you that were never born
again, and made new creatures, and raised from being dead in sin, to a state of new,
and before altogether unexperienced light and life, are in the hands of an angry
God.”
In this part of Edwards sermon, he was saying that all of the people who are not born again are
in the hands of an angry God. To him they are “unexperienced with light and life”. You are
basically not on God’s good side.

Religious Beliefs: Bradstreet
1
“ And to my God my heart did cry
To strengthen me in my Distresse ”
Bradstreet is asking for God to help her stay strong in her time of need.. She’s lost her house
and doesn’t know what to do.
2
“ I blest his Name that gave and took,
That layd my goods now in the dust ”
Bradstreet is blessing God’s name, even though He’s taken everything that He’d given
her.

"Upon the Burning of Our House - July 10th, 1666" Lines 14-15
Religious Beliefs: Edwards
“It would be dreadful to suffer this fierceness and wrath
of Almighty God one moment; but you must suffer it to all eternity. There will
be no end to this exquisite
horrible misery.”
In this selection,. he showed God as being angry at you if you’re not born again..

Human Frailty: Bradstreet
1
“ Then streight I gin my heart to chide,
And didst thy wealth on earth abide?
Didst fix thy hope on mouldring dust,
The arm of flesh didst make thy trust?
Raise up thy thoughts above the skye
That dunghill mists away may flie. ”
In this stanza, Bradstreet is scolding herself because she is morally frail. She was thinking her
earthly wealth would last, when all her real wealth is actually in Heaven

Human Frailty: Edwards
“We find it easy to tread on and crush a worm that we see crawling on the earth; so
it is easy for us to cut or singe a slender thread that any thing hangs by; thus easy
is it for God when he pleases to cast his enemies down to hell. . . .”
Edwards shows frailty physically in this part of his sermon. Frailty is a weakness and here he compares
God’s power to crushing a worm.. Edwards is asking his audience if they think that it is as easy to
send someone to hell as it is to crush a worm..

cotton Mather
Cotton Mather was a New England Puritan minister. Mather was born on
February 12, 1663. His mothers name was Maria Mather and his father name was
Increase Mather. He had two siblings, Richard Mather and John Cotton. Mather
attended Boston Latin School and graduated from Harvard at the age of 15. In
1685, he became a full pastor of a church called the North Church. He dedicated
his life mostly to praying, writing, preaching, and publishing. One of his books
became really famous. That book was called Bonifacius, it shows humanitarian
acts.
Mather was a very famous publisher, he wrote and published more than 400
books. Mather started working with his father on cautioning judges against the
use of “spectre evidence”. He died only five years after his father. Him and his
father worked together for 40 years. Cotton Mather died on February 13, 1728,
at the age of 65.
Cotton Mather Excerpt:
“But All those Attempts of Hell, have hitherto been Abortive, many an Ebenezer has been Erected
unto the Praise of God, by his Poor People here; and, Having obtained Help from God, we continue to
this Day. Wherefore the Devil is now making one Attempt more upon us; an Attempt more Difficult,
more Surprizing, more snarl'd with unintelligible Circumstances than any that we have hitherto
Encountered; an Attempt so Critical, that if we get well through, we shall soon enjoy HalcyonDays
with all the Vultures of hell Trodden under our Feet. He has wanted his Incarnate Legions to
Persecute us, as the People of God have in the other Hemisphere been Persecuted: he has therefore
drawn forth his more Spiritual ones to make an Attacque upon us.”

Cotton Mather Quotes
❖ “ The word of God must be read and heard with diligence that
so you may arrive to the knowledge that is needful for you”
-Cotton Mather
❖ “ Ah, children, be afraid of going prayless to bed lest the devil
to be your bed fellow.”
-Cotton Mather
By what I’ve seen, Cotton Mather has a view of God more like
Anne Bradstreet. Bradstreet has a good view of God. She sees him
as a helpful, loving, and caring person. From the quotes shown
above, it shows that Mather believes that God is important. Mather
and Bradstreet have a similar view of God.
Michael Wigglesworth
Michael Wigglesworth was born in Wrawbury, Licolnshire on October 18, 1631.
He came to America at the age of seven. He lived in New Haven for a while
until he attended Harvard where he graduated from in 1651. He became a
puritan minister and a poet. He was married three times and had eight children
total, six with his second wife. One of Wigglesworth’s son, Samuel, had twelve
children. He wrote many literary works, including “The Day of Doom”, “God's
Controversy with New England”, and “Meat out of the Eater”. He died June 10,
1705. The writing on his grave has been credited to Cotton Mather.
Michael Wigglesworth Excerpt:
Day of Doom
Stanza 2
Stanza 4
Wallowing in all kind of sin,
vile wretches lay secure:
The best of men had scarcely then
their Lamps kept in good ure.
Virgins unwise, who through disguise
amongst the best were number'd,
Had clos'd their eyes; yea, and the wise
through sloth and frailty slumber'd.
They put away the evil day,
And drown'd their care and fears,
Till drown'd were they, and swept away
by vengeance unawares:
So at the last, whilst Men sleep fast
in their security,
Surpriz'd they are in such a snare
as cometh suddenly.
Comparing Wigglesworth
Based on the excerpt I chose, I would say Michael Wigglesworth is more like
Jonathan Edwards. He thinks that sinners are terrible people and hated more
than people already living in Hell. In the last four lines of stanza 4, he says “So
at the last, whilst Men sleep fast in their security, Surpriz'd they are in such a
snare as cometh suddenly.” He’s saying that while men think they are safe,
they’re really caught in a snare which he is comparing to an angry God. He also
writes “Wallowing in all kind of sin, vile wretches lay secure”. He’s saying that
the people that should be punished for their sins are actually safe from any kind
of punishment, though they shouldn’t be.
