Mitosis- Internet Lesson
Objective: Review the steps of mitosis and view video simulations of cell division. View an onion root tip
and calculate the percentage of cells at each of the stages of cell division.
To find the Mitosis Tutorial:
1) Go to the Blair Community Schools Website:
http://www.blairschools.org/
2) Click on Schools in the purple bar toward the top of the page
3) Click on High School
4) On the left side click Staff Directory
5) Click on Mrs. Eckel or Mrs. Gross
6) Click on your class
7) Click on Cells Alive under the Section Links
8) On the left side of the screen, is a Navigation Bar, click on the link to Mitosis. Read the text on
this page and view the animation, you can slow down the video by clicking step by step through
the phases.
Questions:
1) Which stage does the following occur:
Chromatin condenses into chromosomes.
______________________________
Chromosomes align in center of the cell
______________________________
Longest part of the cell cycle.
_____________________________
Nuclear envelope breaks down
_____________________________
Cell is cleaved into two new daughter cells
_____________________________
Daughter chromosomes arrive at the poles
_____________________________
Chromatids are pulled apart
_____________________________
Watch the video carefully.
2) The colored chromosomes represent chromatids. There are two of each color
because one is an exact duplicate of the other.
How many chromosomes are visible at the beginning of mitosis? ____________
How many are in each daughter cell at the end of mitosis?
____________
The little green T shaped things on the cell are:
____________
What happens to the centrioles during meiosis?
____________

2) See # 2-6 above.
3) Click on Onion Root Tip Mitosis under the Section Links
Read the Introduction then click on the “next” button.
You will have 36 cells to classify. When you are finished, record your data in the chart below.
Round to the nearest whole number.
Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase Anaphase
Telophase
Total
Number of cells
Percent of cells
To calculate the percent of cells: Number of cells divided by total X 100
