R ESEARCH
Research is focused on New Media theory and practice. Particular interests include Interactive Digital
Narrative, Computer Games, Physical/Mobile Computing, and the effects of New Media on Society.
In Interactive Digital Narrative, I follow an iterative and integrated approach in developing theory in
relation with practical experiments. I have recently applied for an “NEH digital startup” grant to
extend ASAPS (Advanced Stories Authoring And Presentation System, http://advancedstories.net), a
standards-based software platform for interactive narrative and other digital experiences. This
software, developed since 2006 by me (partially funded by the NEH grant Foundation Schema for
Narrative Authoring and Presentation Systems, Award IIS-0739497) represents the practical side.
On the theoretical side, I conduct workshops and collaborate with an international team of
researchers to enhance a theoretical framework that positions Interactive Digital Narrative as distinct
from more traditional narrative forms.
In Physical and Mobile Computing I’m interested in the aesthetic and pragmatic aspects of interactive
installation pieces. Also, I’m exploring wide distance connected spaces, for example the integration
of a remote location in an existing exhibition space (eg. underground structures world wide) and to
bring the possibilities of connecting visitors around the world. This research is informed by my work
in Georgia Tech’s 'Future of the Museum' research group, where I developed a prototype for
remote/online curatorship. The group worked closely with the Atlanta High Museum and the Louvre
as part of a High Museum/Louvre partnership and concentrated on tools and methods that would
simplify and extend this and similar worldwide partnerships.
