Riddle me This:
Paul's height is six feet, he's
an assistant at a butcher's
shop, and wears size 9
shoes. What does he weigh?

Health...
Did You Know?
Worldwide, right-handed
people live, on average, nine
years longer than left-handed
people do. This doesn't have
a genetic basis, but is largely
due to the fact that a
majority of the machines and
tools we use on a daily basis
are designed for those who
are right handed, making
them somewhat dangerous
for lefties to use and
resulting in thousands of
accidents and deaths each
year.
Riddle Answer:
wonder how some of you people do it with 3, 4, 5 kids at
home and involved in school activities, and you still
manage to keep your sanity. Truly amazing stuff!
At this time of year, Easter always reminds me how very
blessed I am to have a job I enjoy, a very supportive
family, and such wonderful kids at home. The busier
schedule also reminds me how lucky I am to get to spend
time with Edwin and Estelle almost every day.
I'm also very blessed to have the opportunity to work with
all of you. The vast majority of the patients I see are
referred by other patients. There is no greater compliment
than that. Thank you so much.
Finally, I want to ask for help in other ways. Do you have a
topic you'd like to know more about in this newsletter? Do
you have concerns about medications you're on, or how to
get started with some exercising (the snow WILL be gone
at some point!), or if chiropractic can help a problem
you've been dealing with? Please, just ask! Also, if you are
a member of a group and are looking for a guest speaker,
please consider me. From the Girl Scouts to a Prayer
Group at Trinity Lutheran, to a class at a local school, I
cherish every opportunity I have to talk about health. Just
ask!
Health Link of the Month:
Farm Salmon vs Fresh Salmon:
Check out the facts! The attached
link and infographic will show you
the benefits of the Fresh Stuff. Pay
particular attention to the
ANTIBIOTICS part...it's kind of
scary! Also included in the
infographic is the following: "Unlike omega 3 fatty acids,
you can go overboard on omega 6. A lower ration of
omega6/omega 3 fatty acids is more desirable." We need
more Omega 3's in our lives!
Meat.

What are "Flat Feet"?
Flat feet (sometimes referred
to as "fallen arches") are not
difficult to spot. It is a
condition in which there is
either no arch or a very low
arch in one or both feet.
Whereas the inside of the foot
is lifted off the ground in
people with normal arches,
someone with flat feet will
have their entire foot flat on
the ground.
2
This can sometimes lead to over-pronation, in which the
foot rolls over towards the inside. You can often see the
effects of over-pronation if you look at your shoes from the
back. The insides of the heels will show greater wear than
the outsides.
Flat feet are somewhat common, with approximately 20%
of the population having them. They can occur at any age,
and are sometimes due to a congenital problem. In adults,
it is often caused by a lack of physical activity or can be a
result of obesity. If the foot is subjected to repetitive
micro-trauma, such as regularly walking or running on
hard surfaces, this can cause damage to the posterior tibial
tendon (PTT). This tendon is responsible for keeping the
arch in position. Other conditions that can weaken this
tendon are pregnancy, arthritis, and trauma or foot
fractures.
Some people experience no pain from having flat feet.
However, flat feet can cause misalignment elsewhere,
leading to other musculoskeletal problems. These
problems may include plantar fasciitis (pain in the heel),
Achilles tendonitis, knee pain, shin pain, low back pain,
bunions, corns, and calluses. The feet may also tire easily.

What is "Referred" Pain?
A couple weeks ago, Eric came
in with some bad pain in his
ribs. It wasn't unusual for him to
have rib and midback pain, but
this time it seemed different.
So, after talking to him a bit
more, I decided to check out his
back and ribs with some
additional testing. What I found
was that his pain wasn't coming
from his back or his ribs. It was actually his gallbladder.
The pain of his gallbladder inflammation was causing pain
to go to other areas in his body.
"Referred pain" can be a perplexing phenomenon for
anyone who experiences it. Referred pain is what happens
when you feel pain in an area of your body that is not
actually the original source of the pain signals. One of the
most common examples of referred pain is when pain is
felt in the left arm, neck or jaw of a person suffering a
heart attack, while they often have no feelings of pain in
the chest area itself.
It's important to note that referred pain is different from
radiating pain, in which the pain felt in one area travels
3
down a nerve, causing pain along the length of the nerve.
This is often the case with sciatica, where pain originates
in the lower back and radiates down the leg.
Researchers are still not exactly sure what causes referred
pain. Some experts believe that it is due to a mix-up in
nerve messaging. The central nervous system (CNS) is
constantly receiving a barrage of different messages from
different parts of the body. These messages may get
mixed up somewhere along the path between the place
where the irritated nerve is signaling and the spinal cord or
brain where pain signals are processed. With an extensive
network of interconnected sensory nerves that serve the
same region of the body, such as the nerves of the lower
back, thighs and hips, it may be more common for signals
to get mixed up than you might imagine.
