Week #1:
Monday, August 22nd:
1.
Vacation spots introduction.
2.
Hand out intro folders with:
a. Class rules and procedures and AP contract.
b. Give binder divider titles: notes, vocabulary, journals, grammar, AP
information, activities for the nine-week period.
c. LCD projector for acceptable use policy for electronics and for Remind
101.
d. SSR guidelines - 1st SSR novel will be Grendel – students need to have
this novel purchased by September 2nd at the latest; if they can have it by
this Friday, that is fine, if not, they will be reading from my copies.
e. Due dates for the summer reading assignments.
f. Semester project – memory book
3.Get into groups to discuss Poisonwood Bible.
HW: Analysis of sections of Poisonwood Bible is due tomorrow (assignment #1)
Tuesday, August 23rd:
1.
Vocabulary set #1: use the following from my vocabulary strategies
workshop:
a. Explain and describe the term but do not define.
b. Students use their own words to define each term.
c. Students draw a picture(s) to represent the term.
2.
Collect – analysis of sections in Poisonwood Bible.
3.
Get back onto groups and finish the questions and discussion for
Poisonwood Bible.
HW: Poisonwood Bible – 15 quotes/explanations are due tomorrow (assignment
#2)
Wednesday, August 24th:
1.
Collect Poisonwood Bible quotes/explanations (reading journal).
2.
Journal entry: When you think about our world today, are there any
similarities between it and the world written about in Brave New World.
3.
Get back into groups to discuss Brave New World.
HW: Assignment #1 for Brave New World is due tomorrow
Thursday, August 25th:
1.
Vocabulary review using: free association.
2.
Hand in assignment #1 for Brave New World.
3.
Finish discussion of Brave New World
HW: Bring Grendel with you if you have it; if not, we will read out loud
Friday, August 26th:
1.
Hand out take home exams for the two summer reading novels – due on
Monday of next week.
2.
Assignment #2 – due on Tuesday of next week.
1.
Introduction to Grendel with intro notes, terms and definitions to know, and
study questions to fill out while reading. The reading schedule will be: Chapters
1-4 due by September 2nd; Chapters 5-8 due by Friday September 9th; Chapters 912 due by Friday, September 16th.

Read Grendel for SSR.
Week #2:
Monday, August 29th:
1.
Get second ten literary terms and follow these steps:
a. Explain and describe the term but do not define.
b. Students use their own words to define each term.
c. Students draw a picture(s) to represent the term.

Hand in take home exams for the summer reading novels.
3.
Introduction to British Literature: Anglo-Saxon Period

b. Textbook – pages 23-27
4.
Definition of archetype and types – pinpoint those that will be used in
Beowulf.
HW: Assignment #2 for Brave New World is due tomorrow
Tuesday, August 30th:
1.
Finish British Literature: Anglo-Saxon Period Introduction.
1.
Hand in assignment #2 for Brave New World.
2.
Hand out “What is a Hero?” worksheet and “How to Identify a hero”
worksheet and fill out and discuss each.
3.
Discuss Epic Hero – handout and look on pages 38-39 in text; students need
to look at the vocabulary on page 39.
4.
Hand out study questions for Beowulf.
5.
Begin listening to and discussing Beowulf. (pages 42-70)
Wednesday, August 31st:
1.
Complete the activities from yesterday.
2.
Journal
3.
Hand out AP packet #1: Annotating text and multiple choice questions. We
will go over annotating a text together and do the first practice passage together
as a class.
4.
Continue with Beowulf
a. listening and discussing the epic poem
b. Practice multiple-choice
HW: Grendel must be brought by tomorrow
Thursday, September 1st:
1.
Vocabulary review over all twenty terms from first two weeks. Use the
vocabulary pyramid to do this.
2.
Continue with packet #1 over annotating text and multiple-choice.
Friday, September 2nd:
1.
Vocabulary Test over the first twenty literary devices.
2.
Topic B: College Essay #1 – due on Wednesday typed double-spaced.
3.
Hand out Grendel novels to those that didn’t bring their own and study
questions.
4.
SSR: Check novels, read silently and work on study questions.
Week #3
Monday, September 5th:

Hand in college essay number one.

Finish assignments from yesterday – finish Beowulf if necessary.

Finish packet #1 of AP practice.
4.
Begin packet #2 – prose passage with satire, the three C’s
Thursday, September 8th:

Continue with Packet #2 AP Practice.
2.
Finish Beowulf.
Friday, September 9th:
1.
SSR: Grendel – discuss chapters 4-7; read chapters 8-12
HW: Test over Beowulf on Monday

Week #5
Monday, September 19th:
1.
Review for test over Grendel.
2.
Finish anything to do with Packet #2.
3.
Introduction to Medieval Time Period: (pages 28-33)
a. Students will get into groups (three groups – one for historical content, cultural
content, and literary content).
b. Students will read their given section.
c. Then, each group will create a time-line for their section and present.
4.
Background on Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales including terms: irony,
personification, allusion, characterization, and pilgrimage.
a. in textbook (pages 140-180)
b. packet – put in binder: genre, chronology, purpose, list of characters,
description character bone structure sheets, etc... Explain and introduce
assignments.
Tuesday, September 20th:
1.
Test over Grendel.
2.
Finish introduction to Medieval time period, Chaucer, and The Canterbury
Tales.
3.
Hand out characterization handouts; students will fill out one for each
pilgrim (30).
4.
Listen to tales in the book/fill out character description sheets.
Wednesday, September 21st:
1.
Journal: What characteristics does a person of good character possess?
Discuss differences between men and women.
2.
Continue listening to and reading tales from text – finish character sheets
Thursday, September 22nd:
1.
Packet #3 – poetry analysis free response
2.
Continue reading and discussing tales.
HW: SSR will be a Canterbury Tale we did not cover in class.
Friday, September 23rd:
1.
Read your chosen Canterbury Tale.
Week #6
Monday, September 26th:
1.
Vocabulary set #5:
a. Explain and describe the term but do not define.
b. Students use their own words to define each term.
c. Students draw a picture(s) to represent the term.

Continue with the tales and the character sheets. Finish “The Knight’s Tale,”
and finish the character sheet.
Tuesday, September 27th:
1.
Finish “The Knight’s Tale” if we didn’t yesterday.
2.
Finish character analysis as well.
3.
“The Wife of Bath Tale.”
Wednesday, September 28th:
1.
Continue with “The Wife of Bath Tale” and character profile sheets for the
tales.
2.
Assign the creative writing of your own Canterbury Tale.
Thursday, September 29th:
1.
Vocabulary review for set 5; Word association.
2.
Finish all the tales and character profile sheets.
3.
Hand in the profile sheets.
4.
Finish reading your own tale.
5.
Begin a round table discussion on your chosen tale.
Friday, September 30th:
*Round table discussion of your own tale.
Week #7
Monday, October 2nd:
1. Vocabulary set #6:
a. Explain and describe the term but do not define.
b. Students use their own words to define each term.

2. AP Packet #3 – poetry
Tuesday, October 3rd:
*Packet Three Continued – finish looking at scored samples and write your own
response. Finally score and discuss together.
Wednesday, October 4th:
1.
Packet #1 to do multiple choice over “Advice to a Prophet” and “The Eolian
Harp”.
2.
Introduction to “What you Need to Know About Poetry” packet - “A Poison
Tree”; “A Solitary Reaper”; and “The Cambridge Ladies”.
3. Put all in the poetry section of your binder.
Thursday, October 5th:
1.
New list of literary devices – test next Friday.
2.
Introduction to poetry notebook assignment.
3.
Do Pastoral poetry TP-CAST with partner.
4.
Journal: What has the power to corrupt?
5.
Paradox Poetry introduction (482) - “Ecclesiastes”; “23rd Psalm” - analyze
imagery and inspiration; put in poetry section of binder.
6.
Inspirational poetry and John Milton introduction – analyze “How Soon Hath
Time” and “When I Consider How My Light”; TP-CAST with a partner; put in poetry
section.
Friday, October 6th:
1.
Vocabulary review for sets 5 and 6 using Odd one out.

Finish activities from yesterday on poetry.

Introduction to Ballads:
a. TPCAST Analysis Chart and explanation
b. page 217 in textbook: “Barbara Allen”; “Get up and Bar the Door”; do

WEEK#8
Monday, October 10th: Half-day staff development
1.
Test over AP Terms

Finish inspirational poetry analysis.
3.
Metaphysical poetry introduction (514-515)/John Donne (516) “Validation”; “Sonnet 10”; “Meditation” - Ben Jonson (525) - “My First Son”;
“Song to Celia”. Analyze the poetry with a partner using TP-CAST.
Tuesday, October 11th:
1.
Finish metaphysical poetry analysis.
2.
Cavalier Poets/Carpe Diem (530) - “Coy Mistress”; “To the Virgins”; “To
Athea”; analyze for notebook with a partner.
Wednesday, October 12th:
1.
Introduction to Sonnet form (310) – read and discuss.
2.
Identify Petrarchan and Spenserian Sonnets (310-324) – Spencer and Sir
Thomas Wyatt - “Sonnet 30” and “Sonnet 75”
3.
Analyze for poetry section of binder.
Thursday, October 13th:
1.
Second set of literary devices – test on Friday.
2.
Finish AP Practice and score.
3.
Introduction Shakespearean Sonnets (pages 324-329).
a. With “Sonnet 18”, “Sonnet 29” and Sonnet 116”, students will read each,
choose one, and the “Sonnet Analysis” assignment to hand in on Monday.
b. With the two not chosen, students will do TP-CAST analysis for their
poetry section.
HW: Finish above by Monday
Friday, October 14th:
1.
Share some “Sonnet Analysis” and hand those in for a grade.
2.
Petrarchan Sonnets (334-337); Francesco Petrarch - “Sonnet 90”; “Sonnet
292” - analyze for poetry section of binder.
HW: Finish above for homework
WEEK #9
Monday, October 17th:
1.
Computer lab
2.
Introduction to The Renaissance Period and William Shakespeare using:
a. Tramline Virtual Field Trips
b. www.virtualblackboard.com/trips.htm
c. Click on Shakespeare and students take the tour while filling out the
blank worksheets.
Tuesday, October 18th:

*Continue with the virtual tour over The Renaissance and William
Shakespeare.
