"If members of a society get together, they can achieve harmony". See how this idea is
elaborated in the following paragraph.
It is very important that members of a society always get together in
day - to - day activities of that society. In my view, when members of a
society work together they develop good relationships. Through relationships they develop love and affection. I also feel that good relationships
promote mutual understanding. If people have good relationships they learn
to be cooperative. They also learn to tolerate others. As I see it, working
together is the foundation for peace.
Now prepare a speech for the morning assembly on "Unity in the family is the
path to peace and harmony." The ideas in the diagram may be useful to you. You

Listening Text
The scouts were engaged in various activities during the day time. In the evening
they pitched camp to spend the night. After dinner they gathered round the fire
and presented various items including songs and dramas. The following is the
speech made by a senior scout to
inspire the juniors.
My dear friends,
As you all know we
are a worldwide organization. As
scouts we learn to be good citizens
and prepare ourselves for the
responsibilities of adulthood. Our
motto is “Be Prepared.”
Scouting began in England in
1907. Today, there are Boy Scout
programmes in more than 140
countries. In the United States alone,
there are over 4 million scouts.
As scouts we learn useful skills
while having fun. We swim, play, do
sports, go camping and hiking and
learn how to survive outdoors. We learn how to protect the environment and conserve
resources. We also learn arts and crafts, first aids and learn to do various community
services and volunteer work.

A Strange Meeting
The following text describes an experience undergone by
Nilantha and Kalpa when they were camping. Kalpa is
narrating the incident.
Read it and write suitable short dialogues between Kalpa and Nilantha in the
spaces given in between. Write them in your writing book.
It was the third day of our camping. Kalpa and I were returning from the forest. The
moon was shining very brightly in the clear sky. Suddenly I heard a sound similar to
that of an aeroplane, but it was louder.
Dialogue 1
We looked up. We were amazed to see something very bright in the sky. It was
moving very fast from the East to the West. When it came right over my head I saw it
stopping. A sharp bright beam of light fell on us and turned around us. I was blind with
the flash. We were so frightened that we screamed together but no one came to help
us. The next moment I felt that I was being lifted up fast and I saw Nilantha was also
moving up. In a split second we were inside a flying saucer. It was a huge hall with lots
of machines.
Dialogue 2
At once a strange figure appeared before us. It was not a human being but an alien. He
had a big head, two big eyes and a large mouth. His body was very small and he had
two hands and two short legs to balance his body. Two antennae like projections
could be seen on his large head. He was coming towards me.
Dialogue 3

38
We were so frightened that we screamed. We started running about and he began to
chase us. We were looking for a place to get out.
“Stop! Don’t run”, he shouted.
“ Oh! Help us! Somebody help us!” we shouted.
“Stop! We’ll not harm you. We are taking you to our planet, Mars”, he said.
Suddenly I saw a door. I opened it and ran out. Terrible! We were out of the
flying saucer in the sky, we were falling down. We were screaming. I saw mountains,
forests, rivers, huge buildings and oceans below me and the Mars being above me.
What would have happened next?
Imagine you were Kalpa and write what happened next in your writing book.

A Speech
The following is a speech made by a student at the morning assembly to mark
the United Nations Day on 24th October.
United Nations
United Nation’s Security Council
Food Aid Distribution in Afghanistan
The Principal, dear teachers and my dear
friends, I’m going to speak a few words about
the United Nations Organization.
The idea of an organization of countries
was first proposed by the German philosopher
Immanuel Kant. His idea came to life after
World War I (1914-1918). The war caused
great destruction. Countries realized how
horrible war was. They were inspired to come
together and work towards peace. They
formed a new organization, the League of
Nations, to achieve that goal. Although it lasted
for several years some of the world’s most
powerful countries did not become members.
There were often disagreements among
member countries, too. As a result, the
organization failed; World War II broke out in
1939.
41

Although the League of Nations failed, the idea
of such an organization did not die. After successful
attempts by several powerful countries of the world,
the UN officially came into existence on October 24,
1945, with 51 member countries.
United Nations is an international organization of
countries. It was created to promote world peace and
cooperation. Its mission is to maintain world peace,
develop good relations between countries, promote
cooperation in solving the world’s problems and
encourage respect for human rights. It brings together
countries that are rich and poor.
As the UN is one of the foremost international
organizations, it is important for us, as students, to learn
more about this organization. You can refer to the
encyclopaedia in the library and gather a lot of information about the UN.
Thank you very much.

Reading
(C / L 5.6 - Reads and responds to simple poems / stories)
a) Read the following story. What do you think is the message conveyed
through this story. Select from the following options.
1. Even animals can achieve something if they get together.
2. Even the most useless people can achieve something if they get together.
3. People should not neglect animals when they are no longer useful.
The Musicians of Bremen
There were a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster who were very old and were
no longer useful to their masters. They were ill-treated by their masters. When the
four met together, they decided to go to Bremen - a place famous for its freedom
where animals could live without owners. May be
they could become musicians since they could not
work.
They could not reach Bremen in one day. They
decided to spend the night under a big tree in the
forest. Both the cat and the rooster could climb trees,
so they decided to sleep on the tree. Neither the
donkey nor the dog could climb trees, so they decided
to sleep under the tree. The rooster flew to the top of
the tree where he was safer and looked around before
he went to sleep. In the distance, he saw a little spark
burning. When he told his friends what he had seen,
the four decided to go there in the hope of finding
some food and shelter.
When they reached the place, they saw a house. They saw through a window
that there were some men sitting at a table eating and drinking. There was both food
and gold on the table. The animals planned to perform for the men in the hope of
getting some food. The donkey placed himself with his forefeet upon the window
ledge. The dog jumped on the donkey’s back. The cat climbed upon the dog, and the
rooster flew up and perched on the cat’s head.
At a given signal they began to perform together. The donkey brayed, the dog
barked, the cat mewed, and the rooster crowed. The men who were robbers thought
that it was a ghost. They were extremely frightened and ran away. The four companions
found both food and shelter and were very happy.
b) Discuss and write a story similar to the one given above on animals
