the shape of a snowman, using sweetie laces for a scarf
and raisins or sweets for eyes, nose and mouth.
Make Snowmen - Cover toilet roll tubes with cotton wool or wadding, use
felt for scarf and buttons, googly eyes and cut noses and
hats from card. You could also use a screw top jar and
put sweets inside.

the floor for islands. When music stops, Beavers must
get inside hoop. Remove hoops one at a time.

New Zealand
Opposites –
Explain to the Beavers that in New Zealand, summer is in
December and January when we are having our winter, and
their winter is in June, July and August when it is our
summer. And when it is day time here, it is night time in
New Zealand.
To play this game, call out the month of the year or the
time of day here and the Beavers show what is happening
in New Zealand e.g. July and the Beavers must pretend to
be cold.
Grass Skirts -
Maoris traditionally wear grass skirts. Make these from
crepe paper. Join together, cut to make the grass and
wrap round the waist.
Face Painting -
Maoris traditionally paint their faces with intricate line
patterns. Let the Beavers paint each other’s faces.
Dance -
Traditional dance is the Haka, where the Maoris stamp
their feet, make faces and jump in the air, to ward off
evil spirits. Show the Beavers this on video or laptop, and
let them copy the dance.
Woolly dolls -
Card 17 cm x 13 cm (or empty DVD box)
Wool
Wrap the wool around the card lengthwise several times. Remove
from the card and tie a short length of wool around the hank 2cm
from the top, this will make the head.
Wrap more wool around the card width wise to make arms. Remove
from the card and tie with short lengths 1.5 cm from the ends to
make hands. Put the arms through the body and tie round the waist
to hold in place.
Mrs Woolly is now complete.
To make Mr Woolly divide the ‘skirt’ into two and tie each leg 1.5 cm
from the ends to make feet.
Sheep Dog Trials - In lodges, pick one member to be the sheep dog, the rest
are sheep. Make up one pen for each lodge, using suitable
furniture or by chalking the floor. The sheepdogs are
told which pen they must get their sheep into, but not the
sheep. The sheep dog must guide his sheep to their pen
using signals, gestures and touch, without saying a word.
Allow all Beavers to have a turn at being sheep dogs,
varying the pens each time.
As New Zealand is at the other end of the earth, can the Beavers stand on
their heads?
Italy

ingredients.
3. The ingredients are set out on ‘Market Stalls’.
4. The eldest Beaver (in each Group) tells each Beaver an ingredient
to ‘buy’.

Emergency Services
Explain to the Beavers what they must do in an emergency.
First, they must get adult help.
Then act out what happens when making a 999 call using an unconnected
phone.
Act out some scenarios with Beavers making the calls and adults acting as
the operator.
Remind Beavers that they must never make hoax 999 calls.
Emergency Services – Put pictures of emergency service vehicles round the
room – fire engine, ambulance, police car.
Call out an emergency e.g. gran has fallen and can’t get up, and
Beavers must run to the correct emergency vehicle.
Make a fire engine (see template)
Fireman, Policeman, Paramedic – In a circle each Beaver is named
Policeman, Fireman or Paramedic. The leader calls out one of these
names and Beavers with that name round the outside of the circle
and back to their place. When ‘emergency’ is called, everyone runs!
Have a fire drill!
This fun fire engine is from the 1995 Beaver Publication - ‘Something Old, Something New’
