MACH 2016 x Dayeon Park ADIDAS FUTURECRAFT Adidas released 'BOOST' made with 3D printer with a slogan 'FUTURE CRAFT' in Ocober 2015. And with a new technique, they have upgraded a leather named 'SUPER STAR' in 2015. It's just a prototype, but the most important thing is that they are trying to make new shoes with a new technique and many people's eyes are on this. RUNNING TECHNOLOGY In running shoes, Adidas has leading techniques. They keep developing essential techniques about lightweightness, ventilation and cushioning. But if they want to differentiate themselves against other companies, it's obvious that they should release a product with good-look and new technique. With this opportunity, I'd like to propose a new concept which commensurates to 'FUTURECRAFT' about running shoes. ADIDAS MACH 2016 Mach, a measure for the speed of materials running in fluids, is written as M. Usually, it's used to mark the speed when bullets, airplanes, missiles which run fast in the air. I'd like to propose a concept of strong, rapid, jet-like running shoes and also a 'FUTURE CRAFT' combined with techniques and story. 1. Scientific ground A : Bernoulli’s Principle Bernoulli's principle states that an increase in the speed of a fluid occurs simultaneously with a decrease in pressure or a decrease in the fluid's potential energy. The principle is named after Daniel Bernoulli who published it in his book in 1738. <Bernoulli’s principle and Plane’s wing> If the air flowing past the top surface of an aircraft wing is moving faster than the air flowing past the bottom surface, then Bernoulli's principle implies that the pressure on the surfaces of the wing will be lower above than below. This pressure difference results in an upwards lifting force. 2. Scientific ground B : Whole Body Suits In 2000, Speedo launched the Fastskin suit series that mimicked shark skin. <Shark Skin Closeup> Their surface contained bumps and ridges that channeled the water over the swimmer's body approximately 3% more efficiently than traditional materials. Those suits covered most of the body, from neck to ankles and wrists, and their shape was optimized for specific swimming strokes, compressing some body parts while allowing more freedom to the others. Those suits were approved for the 2000 Olympics, where they helped win 83% of the medals. 3. Design concept : Riding the air When we think about running shoes, we usually think about lightweghtness, cushioning and repellency. But, MACH 2016 is a little bit different from it. Inspired by the principle of airplane's wing and swimsuit, I'd like to focus on something that can help us when we exercise. Using efficiently a pressure from the air when we run, I want to propose fast runinng shoes than any others. Just like riding a wind. "PUT UP A WING ON YOUR SHOES” 3. Design Concept : Riding Wind 4. Design motive: Wing frame Basic frame and the line of airplane which makes efficient flight. I want to adopt it on shoes with athletic concept. 5. Concept Sketch 6. Developed Sketch 7. Final Design : MACH 2016 Design point 1. Lightweight outsole To make it as light as possible designed an outsole with thin plastic frame, not with a rubber Design point 4. The “MACH WING” midsole Design point 3. Lightweigt upper material Designed with thin mesh to expel a sweat efficiently and for lightweightness of the shoes. Design point 2. Wing frame pattern Inspired by airplane's basic straight line frame. Designed with a thin line to make a runner can feel comfortable when he or she runs, and also to strengthen the ventilation. Upside of a midsole is designed with a tight curve, bottom is designed with gradual curve. When you run, the air moves from a front side of the shoe to back. When the air goes through "MACH WING", the part of midsole, you get pushing-up-energy in a moment by a gap between different pressure. And it makes you run much faster than ever. 8. Prototype : MACH 2016 1) Key color range The “MACH WING” which are trying to minimalize the air friction and use the flow through the pressure. To make a runner feel like he or she is flying in the air, Used blue line as a key color. 2) Think more 1. Have to make a decision on the size of WING, thickness and how many WINGs will be needed. 2. Have to discuss and test on what material can be put in reality. 3. Have to discuss a profile of midsole to make it as light as possible. To avoid discomfort when you run, put “MACH WING” only on the outside of the shoes.
