Meal Prices: Colorado Harvest of the month for May… Strawberries Physical Activity Topic for May… Explore the National Parks A bright spring day calls for some bright red strawberries! Wild strawberries go back to the times of the Greeks and Romans. Today California grows around 83% of the strawberries grown in the United States. There are over 70 varieties of strawberries, usually growing year round with peak season from April to July. Strawberries are also fun and easy to plant in your own backyard. Strawberries are the only fruit with seeds on the outside, averaging 200 seeds per strawberry. Explore the national parks in Colorado. National parks are beautiful in the spring and make for great family trips. There are so many ways to enjoy your own breathing space at national parks. Here are some ideas: Walking- a popular activity in all national parks. Take in the scenery and get some fresh air into your lungs. Bicycling- a great activity to get out and about in the national parks. Check with the park to see if bike trails are available. Horseback riding- a fun activity to travel through the national parks. Some parks in Colorado provide horseback riding trails. Water sports- a cool activity to discover the rivers of Colorado, including fishing, canoeing, rafting and more. Climbing- an exciting activity to view the scenery. Some of the best climbing areas are located in Colorado national parks. Wildlife watching- an adventurous activity to learn about native animals of Colorado. Besides eating strawberries raw and whole, they are good toppers for ice cream, pancakes or waffles. They also add a great taste to fruit salads, smoothies or cereals. Strawberry shortcake is another popular food item. Who knew strawberries could even be good in a salad? Try the recipe this month to make a refreshing strawberry chef salad. At the same time you’re enjoying these strawberries, you’re getting a great source of vitamin C and folate, both playing roles in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Eight strawberries will provide 140% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C for kids. Strawberries are also fat free, sodium free, cholesterol free. Approximately one cup of strawberries is only 55 calories. Store strawberries in refrigerator for one to three days and wait to wash until they are ready to eat.
