SECOND GRADE NEWS!!
From the Desk of the School Social
Worker…
Reconnecting with your Children
Sometimes parenthood can feel very stressful or
overwhelming. During these times, it may help to
“reconnect” with your children, which can be
beneficial in changing your perspective about child
-rearing. Here are some tips to assist:
- Spend quality time with your children doing
some sort of interactive activity or just have conversation with them
- Ponder your children’s positive attributes and tell
them what those attributes are and how proud
you are to be their parent
- Look at your child when they are not looking at
you, such as when they are watching television or
sleeping, and let your heart feel the love and care
you have for them
Please monitor your child’s reading and math homework and sign
the planner nightly to check for notes from the teacher. You should see
your child bringing home a 100 Book Challenge reading record sheet.
All students need to read fifteen minutes nightly and you can sign a line
on the log for every fifteen minutes read. We will be going on a field
trip to the Sanford Zoo on April 4.
Children’s author Barbara Park is our April Author of the month. She
has written the Junie B. Jones series and The Kid in the Red Jacket.

SAFETY FIRST
Share the Road
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is
kicking off a public awareness campaign, called Share the Road, to
remind motorists to use courtesy when driving and to watch out
for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists
NEWS FROM MEDIA
To celebrate Read Across America Day, Dr.
Seuss’s Birthday; students at Champion Elementary held their Young Author’s Day. Media Specialist, Jacqueline Ouellette, invited
author Stephanie Szerdy to explain the steps
she took to write her book Nelly The Ponce
Inlet Lighthouse Cat. Mrs. Szerdy held two
assemblies, inspiring students to consider the
writing process for their works, while sharing
a few pages of her book. Following the assemblies the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse sent out
volunteers to read Nelly The Ponce Inlet
Lighthouse Cat to classes. Dr. Mann, from
the Ponce De Leon Lighthouse Preservation
Association, came to illuminate the history of
the lighthouse and the lighthouse keepers’
role. The lighthouse left a library box for students to enjoy; the way lighthouse keepers
would have benefited from them in the past.
The day concluded with the author Stephanie Szerdy congratulating the students who
won the Young Author Awards at a reception in the Media Center. Students who won
the award shared their writings with each
other and the author.
Cut Out Cutting In
Cutting in front of another vehicle may create an emergency braking situation for the vehicles around you, especially in heavy traffic.
If you force a larger vehicle to stop quickly this could cause a serious, even fatal accident.
Check Your Blind Spot and Avoid the No-Zone
Large trucks have blind spots known as “No-Zones,” which are
around the front, back and sides of the truck. Don't linger in the
No-Zone, and remember that if you can't see the truck driver in the
truck's mirror, the truck driver can't see you.
Chill Out
Aggressive drivers put themselves and others at risk. Speeding,
running red lights and stop signs, pulling in front of trucks too
quickly when passing and making frequent lane changes, especially in the blind spots of trucks, can create dangerous and potentially fatal situations on the road.
Give Large Trucks Room to Maneuver at Traffic Lights
Truck drivers sometimes need to swing wide to the left in order to
safely negotiate a right turn especially in urban areas. They can't
see cars directly behind or beside them, so give them plenty of
room to maneuver.
