In Europe, whiskey was made with malted barley, something that did not grow well in Western Pennsylvania. So these inventive farmers substituted rye for barley and the rest is history, as they say. A new type of whiskey was born – a distinctly American Whiskey – Pennsylvania Rye, also known as Monongahela Rye. Whiskey continued to be produced in the region until Prohibition when the distilleries went quiet – until recently. In 2011, Pennsylvania’s distillery regulations were eased and paved the way for a rebirth of the region’s storied whiskey making past. Today, Washington County is home to a number of new craft distillers and for the first time since its founding, the 2016 Whiskey Rebellion Festival, held the second weekend of July, featured whiskey made right here in Washington County. “We scheduled our grand opening on the Saturday of the festival,” shared Ellen Hough, owner of Mingo Creek Craft Distillers, along with her husband Jim. Their distillery is located in downtown Washington and they chose its name in honor of the farmers of the Mingo Creek Settlement, who protested the whiskey excise tax of 1791. Ed Belfoure Red Pump Spirits Mingo Creek uses local grains to produce bourbon, corn whiskey, peated bourbon and rye whiskey in barrels. Their equipment is a modern version of the copper pot stills used back in the post-revolutionary era. One of the more popular spirits during the festival was their own version of Monongahela Rye, called Bassett Town Whiskey. Ellen Hough Mingo Creek Craft Distillers Washington County is once again home to whiskey distilleries that are reclaiming a part of our region’s storied past as part of a growing wine, beer and spirits scene. “We were busy all day during our opening with customers filling the distillery and lines out the door and down the street. The response was great. We even had re-enactors walking through the distillery, posing for pictures and at one point joining with customers in a rousing toast,” said Hough. For Ed Belfoure, owner of Red Pump Spirits, a craft distillery that opened in March and also located in downtown Washington, “the festival was so much more successful for us than we had imagined. We extended our hours during the festival and by the end of Saturday we were sold out of our Rebellion Rye and Farmhouse Whiskeys, as well as our Bradford Blackberry Liqueur.” VISITWASHINGTONCOUNTYPA.COM 9 will find customers enjoying their wines on the picturesque patio that overlooks the vineyard and is home to regularly scheduled wine and music events. services support this growing beer craze and we also host the Washington Homebrew Club, which meets the third Thursday of every month at A&M.” John and Dot Husk own J&D. They are passionate about winemaking and helping customers with supplies, advice and support for their own endeavors. In fact, they recently started the Washington County chapter of the American Wine Society, to help bring further resources and support to local winemakers and enthusiasts. In 2015, A&M moved to its current – and larger – location to offer more classes and inventory to better serve their growing customer base. But it is not just a supply house; A&M offers its own selection of wines and plenty of events, like its popular Paint & Sip and Late Night @ the Winery. “Winemaking in Washington has a good following because of the availability of supplies and produce suppliers,” said John. “During the fall, home winemakers will often help out at the wineries to get in on the bulk pricing the wineries get when purchasing grapes.” These new and established businesses are building a vibrant spirits scene in Washington County. They offer a variety of tastes and choices in settings that are well suited for events, private parties or simply a fun outing with friends. Be sure to check them out and experience our region’s history and present in a delightfully tasteful way. As far as the growth of the craft beverage industry in the region, the local businesses are very supportive of each other. “We have had individuals who were opening distilleries attend our wine club meetings to get recommendations for bottles, supplies and how best to promote their businesses with social media. A number of wineries have recently opened in the region and these owners attended meetings of our winemaking organization. This growth is great for all the wineries, because as I often say, I would not go miles out of my way to visit one winery, but I will to visit five.” Those interested in taking his advice and planning a tour of local wineries to taste a variety of wines and explore the region’s landscape, be sure to add these vineyards to your wine tour itinerary – Ripepi Winery & Vineyard in Monongahela, C&T Miller Vineyards in Avella, Raccoon Creek Winery at Kramer’s Greenhouse in Burgettstown and Plum Run Winery in Brownsville, PA. The local whiskey and spirits scene is dynamic, according to Belfoure. “The distillers here all talk to one another and share ideas on techniques and ways to promote our businesses. The diversity of traditional and new types of spirits is exciting and attracting a lot of interest.” Whiskey is not the only spirit being made in Washington County. Wineries mark the region’s landscape and offer a variety of settings and tastes, including J&D Cellars Winery & Vineyard, located on 16 acres off Route 519 in Eighty Four. ONTHE INSIDE With Matt and Susanne Sager Palazzo 1837 Ristorante The Shoppes at Quail Acres I By Mike Bradwell n Italian, the term “palazzo” means an impressive public building or private residence. At Palazzo 1837 Ristorante, the handsome and spacious 1837 Palladian-style brick farmhouse is an impressive reminder of Washington County’s rural roots. Sited along a rising grade above the intersection of Route 19 and Racetrack Road in North Strabane Township in a historic setting known as The Shoppes at Quail Acres, the fine dining establishment has given owners Matt and Susanne Sager the opportunity to envision an expanding list of possibilities for Palazzo and its surrounding property. After renting the restaurant space for four years, the Sagers had the opportunity to invest in an ownership group that purchased the entire Quail Acres site, assuming the responsibility as property managers. In addition to the restaurant, the site includes The Shoppes at Quail Acres specialty retail complex – including a pre-Civil War-era barn – that has been a favored shopping venue for a few decades. “Maintaining the property is crucial because of its historic aspect,” Matt said, noting that the barn recently received a new coat of red paint, as well as a 100-square-foot stencil reading “Quail Acres” that can be seen by passing motorists. The fine dining and specialty retail shops in a historic site make for a unique combination within Washington County’s many tourism offerings. VISITWASHINGTONCOUNTYPA.COM 17 other area companies seeking a place for an offsite lunch or dinner, Susanne said. In addition to the option of dining al fresco or indoors, there are many other reasons for customers’ return visits to Palazzo 1837. Susanne noted that the restaurant adds new dishes frequently and uses seasonal ingredients, making every effort to source locally. “It never lets us stop being creative,” she said. Besides the food, the Sagers also believe that the ability to turn first-time customers into regulars comes from their staff. The Sagers established the restaurant in Quail Acres in 2009, specializing in Northern and Southern Italian dishes featuring steaks, seafood, pasta and veal entrees. Today, Palazzo 1837 and The Shoppes at Quail Acres receive guests from across the tri-state region and beyond. “We see Canadians all of the time,” Susanne said, noting the proximity of Interstates 70 and 79 that provide travelers from all directions due to the nexus of the two highways in Washington County. Those intersecting highways are just one of several location advantages that the Quail Acres site enjoys. With The Meadows • Casino • Racetrack • Hotel and Tanger Outlets as well as several hotels less than a mile away on Racetrack Road, the venue receives many of the visitors from one of the county’s most vibrant commercial corridors. But the well-preserved 19th century farm site also offers diners and shoppers a respite from their more fast-paced activities. One of the changes the Sagers made for their diners was the addition of a large deck and awning that accommodates outdoor dining for up to 70 people at a time. It was a move, Matt said, that greatly increased customer traffic, particularly during warm weather months. That is not to say that Palazzo does not offer more intimate dining inside. The farmhouse is divided into a main dining area, as well as a number of smaller private rooms on the first and second floors, a feature that particularly appeals to business clientele from Southpointe, as well as those from When they are not planning the next event or menu update, the Sagers enjoy some downtime at their East Washington home, working in their garden. When they do go out to dinner, a favorite stop is The Back Porch in Speers. With a site that encompasses both the restaurant and the retail property, the Sagers believe they have found a place from which they can continue to expand their business vision. Matt explained that many restaurant operators lease their space, which could limit their commitment to a particular place. “We promote from within,” Matt said, noting that Margaret Stout was recently promoted to executive chef. He added that Stout and Chef Mary O’Leary are both originally from the area. WASHCOCHAMBER.COM Sitting on Palazzo’s deck on a pleasant summer morning with a view of the Quail Acres property, Susanne sees the possibilities of constant renewal by staying in a place that defines Washington County’s heritage so well. “We have a lot of respect for this Western Pennsylvania landmark,” she said. “We plan to be here a long time.” Palazzo 1837 Ristorante is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. For reservations, call 724-223-1837. For additional information, access palazzo1837.com. The Shoppes at Quail Acres Another attraction that keeps customers coming back is the made-from-scratch cocktails from bartender Will Lenz, a seven year employee at Palazzo. A Place to Savor While the location has an immediate draw from the two busy highways that border it, Quail Acres is a place that lets guests slow down and enjoy quiet, historic surroundings. With the adjacent retail property, the restaurant offers diners the opportunity to stroll among a variety of specialty shops after a satisfying meal. With stores offering tea and coffee to specialty gifts, as well as beauty and pet-related services, the venue offers something for everyone. On the Right TRACK New Developments Drive Racetrack Road By Brian Conway When longtime restaurant executive Mustafa Dakroub decided to open his first standalone venture, Markook Authentic Mediterranean Eats, he had one thing in mind: “Location, location, location.” The Street at The Meadows Mike Swisher, Principal at Horizon Properties, says that the seeds for The Street were sown three to four years ago, after conversations with owners of The Meadows and a mutual realization that the area, despite attracting millions of visitors a year, was underserved in both restaurants and smaller studio and one-bedroom apartments. already at more than 60 percent capacity, before peak move-in season has even begun. Young professionals, emptynesters and oil and gas industry workers call it home. One new resident is Ashley Madia, age 23, who moved into The Residences in Ashley Madia May. Madia works in Morgantown as a nurse and appreciates the apartment's central location and proximity to both Route 19 and I-79. She says she values the brand-new appliances and building amenities – her boyfriend likes being a stone's throw from The Meadows – but mostly she appreciates what she calls the “bang for your buck.” Mustafa Dakroub Markook's, dubbed by many as “Chipotle for Mediterranean cuisine,” is located within The Street at The Meadows, a booming mixed-use development situated right off Racetrack Road and minutes from The Meadows Casino • Racetrack • Hotel and Tanger Outlets. “When we ventured to build our first unit, we wanted to position the brand for future expansion,” says Dakroub. “As we set sail, choosing The Street was based on a strategic dec26 WASHCOCHAMBER.COM ision that encompasses that idea. We encounter a lot of people coming through the area, from Ohio, New Jersey, and West Virginia, and that allows for exposure of the brand when and where we decide to build other locations.” Markook's is just one of dozens of businesses that have set up shop in and around the Racetrack Road corridor in recent months, cognizant of the millions of potential customers who pass through the area on an annual basis. Primanti Brothers “There was really no place to eat in the area on Racetrack Road,” says Swisher. “We saw an opportunity to bring some new restaurants to the market that did not exist. And in doing that, we created a gateway to the casino, we created amenities that the area needed, and we filled a void in the housing market for smaller apartments.” The Residences at The Street welcomed their first tenants in January of this year, and as of mid-July they were The Residences boast all-inclusive pricing, meaning that tenants like Madia are able to budget well in advance without having to worry about saving for unforeseen utility costs. In addition to Markook's, The Street is home to the everpopular Primanti Brothers, Creole-inspired Buford's Kitchen and a Great Clips Salon. Swisher says that a Dunkin’ Donuts will be next on The Street, and they are in discussions with both a Vietnamese restaurant and a fast casual pizza chain to open up in this growing corridor. The same plaza boasts homemade Italian cuisine at Napoli, a Red Wings Shoes store, Tender Care Learning Center, Burgerz N' Dogz and Relax Organic Salon. And that is just the tip of the iceberg; much more is on the way. There will be 116 apartment units slated to open to tenants beginning this September, while 90 townhouses are on track for a late 2016 or early 2017 opening. Biafora says that the apartments will have a pool on the The idea, says Biafora, premises as well as a fitness center, and that the properties will cost 30-40 is to create “smaller percent less than market value. The concert program will present an in-depth look at this landmark recording in the greater context of the music that preceded and followed, a time many consider to be the last great evolutionary period of jazz. General Admission: $12; Seniors (60+), Alumni & Non-W&J Students: $10; Children (12 and under): $7 Directed by Dan Shaw. By the author of other classic romantic romps, Schnitzler's roundelay of love is told in 10 interwoven scenes: two characters appear in each scene and one of those moves into the next. Some drive multiple days and thousands of miles. One die-hard fan flew in from Korea. The reason? The All-Clad Factory Outlet Sale. “The passion for the product never stops surprising us,” said Bill Groll, vice-president of product development and technology for All-Clad Metalcrafters, and for those with their eye on a particular item, Groll suggests arriving early on the sale’s first day. Quick-to-sell items include bake ware, waffle irons and slow-cookers. The Factory Outlet Sale features both new and old products, with an emphasis on offering items that are often sold-out at retail stores, like Williams-Sonoma and Macy’s, as well as older, discontinued products. Discounts on products range from 40-75 percent, Groll said. In addition to Groll being on hand, so is Wendy Dyer, director of strategic marketing for All-Clad, to help customers find the right pieces. She said often people talk about their first All-Clad purchase. All-Clad Factory Outlet Sale December 2 – 3, 2016 June 2 – 3, 2017 Friday 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Washington County Fairgrounds This year, All-Clad will be offering its new d3 Armor line, which outside of the Factory Sale can only be found at Williams-Sonoma. “These pans have a different construction, but are the same materials as our other pans. The different way of putting them together increases the evenness and gentleness of delivery of the heat,” Groll said. The sale itself takes place in a 17,500 square-foot room, but due to popularity, there is a second 5,290 square-foot room that serves as a waiting room. Customers will be 38 WASHCOCHAMBER.COM issued an entry ticket and given an estimated waiting time. They can then leave and visit other local businesses or restaurants without losing their spot, or stay in the waiting area and observe cooking demonstrations, check out a map of the sale to organize their shopping and talk with All-Clad representatives about finding the right pieces for their kitchen. “I always hear that they love how the product lasts. They will say ‘It still performs how it did 20 or 30 years ago’ or ‘I still love my first pan.’ The other thing people love is that it is made locally,” Dyer said. Throughout the sale, participants can expect AllClad to offer “flash sales” – certain items will go on a deeper discount until they are sold out. For those who anticipate a large shopping list, All-Clad will have a UPS station set up near the checkout. There are also All-Clad factory workers on hand to help customers load their cars. “One of the really great things about the sale is that many of the people working are the people who make the product in the factory. It is really gratifying for them to see how much people love what they make,” Groll said. VISITWASHINGTONCOUNTYPA.COM 39
