te, i s eb nly 2008 W by Fax obruary s der and y 1st Fe r O st rida Po pm, F 5 by 2006 Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon Opening Offer A wonderful vintage that combines power, ripe fruit flavours and exquisite charm 2006 is a great Rhône vintage. It’s the most consistent of the last three very successful years producing sleek, sensual syrahs in the northern Rhône; sumptuous Châteauneufs and Gigondas in the south; exquisite whites and excellent wines in the Languedoc-Roussillon. Grapes ripened more evenly and produced softer rounder tannins in 2006 than in any vintage since 2000. The vintage was a success across all appellations and the individual characteristics and nuances are clearly and deliciously defined. For this offer, therefore, I’ve included wines from all areas and more than 70 producers, a selection which encompasses a great variety of styles. It was immediately obvious, even a year ago when tasting the 2005s that the 2006s were going to be something special. Indeed, both vintages share certain conditions: a hot June and July, a cooler August and then a return to hot, fine weather in September. The difference was in rainfall. 2005 was marked by severe drought, 2006 less so as rains fell on or around 14th July, 15th August and in early September – just when the vines needed water. As in 2005, the harvest was picked in ideal conditions and the quality of the fruit was outstanding. Northern Rhône The deeply coloured, sleek, sensual syrahs of the northern Rhône are going to give a huge amount of pleasure and will be ready sooner than the weightier 2005s. All appellations were successful. Michel Chapoutier claims to have made his best ever vintage in Hermitage in 2006. For earlier drinking, Saint-Josephs are on a similar level to 2005. Wines from Crozes-Hermitage, on the other hand, are more attractive in the round tannin frame of 2006. Southern Rhône Great wine from everywhere and because conditions were less marked by drought, successes are evenly spread. This is the vintage to seek out those less heralded appellations like Vinsobres and Valréas, which are excellent in 2006. Châteauneufs are sumptuous; combining the power and strength of 2005 or 2001 with the roundness of 2000 – a winning combination. Gigondas is very special in 2006 and fully deserves its own mixed case. Not surprisingly, Vacqueyras, Beaumes de Venise and Séguret, all next door to Gigondas, are good too. RH0108/1 January 2008 The Whites Those cool August nights were of course entirely beneficial for white grapes and the white Rhônes are again of a very high order and broadly similar in style to 2005. From further south The Languedoc-Roussillon continues to produce outstanding wines and the 2006 vintage followed closely those conditions found in the southern Rhône. The offer includes wines from many top estates including the outstanding Domaine Gauby and Lafite Rothschild’s Château d’Aussières. Marcel Orford-Williams, Rhône and South of France buyer Other wines, too limited in quantity for this main offer, are available on www.thewinesociety.com. This offer will close at 5pm, Friday 1st February, 2008. For information regarding this offer after this date please contact The Society on 01438 740222. A deliciously fruity red for early drinking but with a touch of class nonetheless. Raised for about a year in two-year-old barrels, this is delicately fruity and charming. 2009–2012. £45 RH19681 Crozes-Hermitage, Cuvée Particulière, Domaine des Remizières Delicious, juicy ripe syrah from this well-established family-run estate. This cuvée is made from 35-year-old vines and raised in a mix of cask and barrel. Outstanding value for money. 2009–2014. £45 RH19081 Crozes-Hermitage, Les Meyssoniers, Chapoutier A very direct syrah, fruity and deliberately uncomplicated. Michel Chapoutier likes this to express fruit to the full so he avoids any use of oak during the élévage. 2009–2014. £45 RH19691 Saint-Joseph, Domaine Sainte Epine Founded on some very old syrah vines, some over 100 years old, this estate occupies a prime site on steep slopes above Tournon. The style is full and sinewy, distinctly un-modern and warranting a little bottle age. 2010–2016. £50 RH19711 Saint-Joseph, Le Grand Pompée, Paul Jaboulet Aîné Deliciously round and appetising syrah for relatively early drinking. 2009–2014. £50 RH19701 Crozes-Hermitage, Cuvée Gaby, Domaine du Colombier The Viale family at Domaine du Colombier are fruit farmers so for them the quality of the raw material is always essential. This is their top cuvée of Crozes and it is typically ripe, thick and nicely structured. 2010–2016. £59 RH19761 Crozes-Hermitage, Alberic Bouvet, Domaine Gilles Robin A more modern style of Crozes from Gilles Robin, a superbly talented grower with vines between Thalabert and Chapoutier’s Meyssoniers. Stylish with plenty of fruit and depth of flavour. The use of oak is exemplary. 2009–2017. £59 RH19781 Crozes-Hermitage, Les Palignons, Les Vins de Vienne We’ve been following this small négoce house since its creation and 2006 is their best vintage to date. Brilliantly judged with just the right level of oak ageing to add complexity without detracting from its wonderful flavours of ripe fruit. 2009–2016. £59 RH19721 Saint-Joseph, Clos de Cuminaille, Domaine Gaillard Pierre Gaillard aims to give pleasure. His wines are always deeply sensual and velvety. His Saint-Joseph from vines close to Côte-Rôtie is no exception. The wines are raised in oak, 40% of which are new barrels. Outstanding. 2010–2016. £63 RH19731 Saint-Joseph, Offerus, Jean-Louis Chave The Chave magic touch extends to this delicious Saint-Joseph. There are essentially three components to Jean-Louis Chave’s selection: one from Saint Jean de Muzols which was soft and deeply attractive; one from Mauves, cherry sweet and exquisite; and, from Tournon, depth and greater density. The blend will clearly be excellent. 2010–2016. £63 Page 2 In-bond price, UK delivered, per six Ref M M RH19751 Saint-Joseph, Le Clos, Domaine Florentin From a magical amphitheatre of old syrah vines which, thanks to a cleft in the rock face, is bathed in afternoon sunlight. This is a wonderfully rich and fullflavoured syrah. 2010–2017. £65 RH19771 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Christophe, Domaine des Remizières Classy, full-flavoured Crozes, made from 85-year-old vines from behind Hermitage and raised in 75% new oak barrels. 2011–2018. £72 RH19791 Saint-Joseph, Domaine du Tunnel Stephanne Robert makes a deliciously round and expressive Saint-Joseph from young vines. There is just a touch of oak that, like a pinch of salt to a dish, gives lift and definition. 2009–2013. £72 RH19801 Saint-Joseph, Les Oliviers, Domaine Gonon This estate has leapt forward and is today in Saint-Joseph’s top five. Only two wines are made, a red and a white. The red is remarkable for its great purity of fruit and balance. 2010–2016. £72 RH19811 Saint-Joseph, l’Olivaie, Domaine Coursodon Jérôme Coursodon is another sure talent in this part of the Rhône, having taken over from his father in 1999. Like the Gonon above, this is flagship Saint-Joseph. The 2006 is voluptuous with the fragrance of dark sweet cherry. 2010–2015. £72 RH19821 Saint-Joseph, Domaine Bernard Gripa Talented Fabrice Gripa is another member of the Mauves set along with Gonon, Chave and Coursodon. The style is decidedly more modern with the accent on soft dark fruit flavours and an attractively round palate. The 2006 is black, ripe and thickly textured. 2009–2014. £75 RH19831 Saint-Joseph, Domaine Bernard Faurie Bernard Faurie has a few vines on steep slopes in Saint-Joseph, almost directly opposite his vines in Hermitage. This is a lovely, ripe-tasting syrah with a touch of blackcurrant and wonderful length. 2009–2015. £75 RH19841 Saint-Joseph Les Royes, Domaine Courbis Most of Saint-Joseph lies on granite but this vineyard called Les Royes is on limestone in a sheltered site in the hills. Very soft with immediate appeal and well judged use of oak. 2009–2015. £78 RH19741 Crozes-Hermitage, Domaine de Thalabert, Paul Jaboulet Aîné Wonderfully rich, thick and plummy with plenty of length. Production of Thalabert has been halved in order to raise the standard. 2010–2020. Magnums available. £85 RH19061 Cornas, Les Arènes, Chapoutier A more modern interpretation of Cornas from Michel Chapoutier, which is surprisingly soft and silky with plenty of length. 2010–2017. £85 RH19871 Cornas Champelrose, Domaine Courbis The 2005 vintage of this wine was rightly given an award by Decanter magazine. The 2006, just as rich, has maybe even greater finesse and delicacy. 2010–2017. £85 indicates magnums available – see Order Form for prices Page 3 In-bond price, UK delivered, per six Ref RH19851 Cornas, Grandes Terraces, Jaboulet Aîné Maison Jaboulet has always enjoyed an enviable reputation as a Cornas producer and this was reinforced with the acquisition of Domaine Saint Pierre. This 2006 is made in part from Saint Pierre grapes which accounts for its richness and full flavour. Great value. 2011–2019. £88 RH19861 Cornas, Domaine Durand Brothers Eric and Joël Durand make very sound wines in both Cornas and Saint Joseph. They own several plots including one on granite that had been abandoned during the first world war. The thickly textured 2006 tastes of sweet, ripe berry fruit. A good buy for the medium term. 2010–2016. £88 RH19881 Cornas, Domaine Alain Verset Alain Verset works four acres of land and also needs to work in a factory to feed his five children. His Cornas is somewhat old fashioned and full of rustic charm. The 2006 is less tannic and rounder than the 2005. 2010–2017. £88 RH19901 Cornas, Domaine Pierre Gaillard This is a first vintage for Pierre Gaillard’s new venture in Cornas. His vines are all to the south of the appellation and used to be farmed by Marcel Juge, one of Cornas’s earlier sages. Silky, rich and savoury. 2010–2018. £88 RH19961 Côte-Rôtie La Viallière, Domaine Champet Getting to Champet’s cellars is no easy matter as his perilously steep driveway seems to hairpin into a void. The wines are worth the terror: very soft and natural, totally without artifice, silky and concentrated. Good value too. 2009–2019. £90 RH19891 Cornas Patou, Domaine Dumien Serrette Gilbert Serrette’s mother used to run the épicerie in Cornas, so the family is well known. He farms some four acres, mostly to the warmer south of the appellation, and makes a delicious forward style that nonetheless ages very well. The 2006, tasting of sweet blackcurrants, is particularly successful. 2010–2020. £93 RH19911 Cornas, Domaine Balthazar Franck Balthazar’s production is limited to just a few casks of deeply scented, dark and solidly built Cornas of excellent value and quality. 2011–2020. £93 RH19941 Cornas, Les Barcillands, Vins de Vienne This new small négoce house continues to impress with its fine hand-crafted wines. Their Cornas, a blend of barrels bought from two top growers, has great definition and lovely ripe fruit flavours. 2010–2018. £98 RH19951 Cornas, Granit 60, Domaine Vincent Paris Very black and juicy syrah from this up-and-coming new talent and nephew of the great Robert Michel. Granit 60 is the cuvée of old vines from the best part of the slope. 2011–2020. £98 Page 4 In-bond price, UK delivered, per six Ref RH19971 Sotanum, Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes, Vins de Vienne A magical story of a great vineyard abandoned after phylloxera and over looked by all except by Pierre Gaillard, François Villard and Yves Cuilleron, who identified the soils as the same as those found a mile or so down the river in Côte-Rôtie. The oldest vines are now over ten years old and yielding syrah grapes of very high quality. The 2006, more than half raised in new oak, has great purity of fruit and lovely minerality. 2011–2018. £98 RH19921 Cornas, Domaine du Tunnel Stéphanne Robert is one of several young growers who are changing the fortunes of Cornas. His 2006s are finely judged, expressive and raised with little new oak. Lovely in the medium term. 2010–2018. £105 RH19981 Côte-Rôtie, Domaine Burgaud Big Bernard has made a brilliant 2006 that is rich, full flavoured and sensual. It will come round a little sooner than the more tannic 2005. 2010–2020. £105 RH19991 Côte-Rôtie, Les Triotes, Domaine Garon A well-knit family with younger sons joining the business and making an immediate and positive impact on the quality of the vines. The 2006 has depth and Burgundian finesse. Details for their outstanding single vineyard wine, Les Rochains, can be found in the restricted list online. 2010–2018. £105 RH20001 Côte-Rôtie, Domaine Niéro Robert Niéro, better known for his Condrieu, used to sell his syrah to Guigal, but for ten years has released his small production of Côte-Rôtie under his name. It is a delicious, gentle, softly centred Côte-Rôtie that can be enjoyed early. 2009–2015. £105 RH20011 Côte-Rôtie, Côte Brune, Domaine Gilles Barge Gilles Barge is on song these days and is making some of the loveliest wines in Côte-Rôtie. The 2006 is no exception and dark, brooding and deeply sensual. Outstanding. 2012–2022. £113 RH20021 Côte-Rôtie, Domaine Gaillard Pierre Gaillard makes a deliciously fragrant, soft and sensual wine that includes a proportion of viognier in the blend. 2010–2017. £113 RH20031 Côte-Rôtie Cordeloux, Domaine Bénetière This micro-estate produces beautifully polished, attractive syrah in a style that is soft and appealing and clearly influenced by Pierre’s major holdings in the lighter southern end of the appellation. 2010–2018. £113 RH20041 Hermitage, Marquise de la Tourette, Delas Finely wrought syrah from the Hermitage slope. With a high percentage of Bessard fruit in the final blend, this will have concentration and staying power. 2012–2020. £113 RH19931 Crozes-Hermitage, Domaine Roure, Paul Jaboulet Aîné The Roure vines are higher up than Thalabert and the wines are livelier and fresher tasting with more minerality and hints of raspberry. Lovely delicacy in this finely etched 2006. 2011–2018. £115 RH20061 Cornas Les Eygats, Domaine Courbis Dark, full-flavoured Cornas from vines that ripen particularly late. Lots of fresh bramble-like fruit here. A Cornas to go with game. 2012–2020. £120 RH20051 Cornas, Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Voge Alain Voge’s old-vine cuvée is reserved, tightly wrought and exquisitely fine with nothing out of kilter. A Cornas that will be delicious after four or five years but repay keeping for much longer. 2011–2022. £125 RH19071 Côte-Rôtie, les Bécasses, Chapoutier Chapoutier’s 2006s are of a very high order. The Côte-Rôtie is fragrant, stylish with great length of flavour. 2011–2019. £129 Page 5 In-bond price, UK delivered, per six Ref M M RH20071 Côte-Rôtie, Domaine Ogier Stéphanne Ogier is a young, ambitious and well-travelled wine grower with two vintages at Stellenbosch under his belt and enough ideas to fill two lifetimes. He makes a modern style of Côte-Rôtie where the accent is on elegance and refinement. The 2006 is wonderfully scented and seductive. 2011–2018. £129 RH20081 Côte-Rôtie, Les Jumelles, Paul Jaboulet Aîné Maison Jaboulet now owns vines on Côte-Rôtie, all in the warmer southern part of the appellation which for many is the best part of the “roasted slope”. The 2006, voluptuous and packed with sweet tasting ripe fruit, is delicious. 2010–2021. £140 RH20091 Côte-Rôtie, Domaine René Rostaing There is less tannin and raw power than in 2005, but what elegance. This is a Côte-Rôtie to charm and delight. 2011–2017. £140 RH19091 Hermitage, Monier de Sizeranne, Chapoutier Michel Chapoutier reckons that 2006 is his best Hermitage vintage in years and starts promisingly with this wonderfully expressive and complex cuvée. Their outstanding single-vineyard cuvées can be found online. 2012–2022. Magnums available. £140 RH20101 Hermitage, Les Chirats de Saint Christophe, Vins de Vienne Big, fat Bessard-Méal blend from the enterprising Gaillard, Cuilleron and Villard trio. The 2006 has the accent on finesse rather than tannic weight. 2011–2019. £148 RH20111 Hermitage, Domaine Bernard Faurie Bernard Faurie still hasn’t moved from his garage, which is just as well as this is where he is making the best wines of his life. The 2006 is balanced to perfection. 2013–2025. £155 RH20121 Hermitage, Cuvée Emilie, Domaine des Remizières Philippe Desmeure and his daughter Emilie have made a concentrated, rich and full-flavoured Hermitage in 2006, full of sweet tasting, ripe fruit and in a style that will be influenced by the use of new oak in the élévage. This will need time. 2013–2024. £175 RH20131 Cornas, Domaine Saint Pierre, Paul Jaboulet Aîné Jaboulet is alone among the big houses to make a top cuvée in Cornas and it is always one of the best wines in the appellation. The 2006 is ripe tasting with refreshing minerality. 2010–2018. £74 RH19371 Gigondas, Ventabren, Moulin de la Gardette In 2006, we preferred Jean-Baptiste Meunier’s top cuvée which he makes out of very old vines of grenache and cinsault. The tannins are wonderfully fine and there is a wealth of rich fruit on the palate. 2011–2021. £78 RH20191 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Tradition, Domaine Giraud This is from a new contact in Châteauneuf that used to sell mostly in bulk. This is a lovely 2006 Châteauneuf made from half grenache. Full bodied and ripe tasting, rather like rich fruit cake. 2009–2019. £80 indicates magnums available – see Order Form for prices Page 9 In-bond price, UK delivered, per six Ref M M RH19651 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cuvée Réserve, Domaine Roger Sabon Jean-Jacques Sabon’s Châteauneuf is for those who like their wines extra smooth. This reserve wine from old vines is rich and concentrated with dark brambly fruit. 2010–2018. £80 RH19591 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de la Roquette Not dissimilar to the very successful 2004 Roquette and just as likely to be delicious after a couple of years in bottle. Though Roquette is part of the same estate as Vieux Télégraphe there is a conscious effort to maintain the different styles. This is very soft, sweet flavoured and satisfyingly rich. 2010–2018. £80 RH20201 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, La Crau de Ma Mère The Mayard family, a brother and two sisters, make wine when not engaged in running marathons in New York or Paris. Part of their production is sold as The Society’s Exhibition Châteauneuf. This though is what they select for themselves. It is a blend of 64% grenache and 18% each of syrah and mourvèdre and has depth and a wealth of fig-like fruit. 2009–2018. £80 RH20211 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Les Sinards, Perrin A third of this comes from Beaucastel, including all the mourvèdre. There is also a sizeable part from near Clos des Papes. A lot of finesse here with some delicious roasted fruit. 2011–2018. £80 RH20221 Gigondas, Valbelle, Château Saint Cosme The strength of the vintage is such that it seemed foolish not to buy one of Louis Barruol’s top wines. Not for lunch time drinking! 2011–2021. £98 RH19151 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe A lovely vintage for Vieux Télégraphe: all is balance, finesse and length of flavour. The tannins are ripe and rounded and there is an abundance of deep cherry-like fruit. 2012–2026. £115 RH19661 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Chante le Merle, Le Bosquet des Papes Very thick, heady, packed with rich liquorice-like fruit and, at over 15% alcohol, not for the faint hearted. 2012–2024. £125 RH19601 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Font de Michelle, Cuvée Etienne Gonnet Jean and Mickey Gonnet use some of their 100-year-old grenache to make this very full and concentrated cuvée of Châteauneuf. This is thickly textured and very rich. 2012–2024. £125 RH19641 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cuvée Chaupin, Domaine de la Janasse Made from nearly 100% grenache from a north-facing sandy slope near Beaucastel, this combines heady black fruit and gentle spice to perfection. 2012–2025. £148 RH19381 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Bargeton, Patrick Lesec Négociant Patrick Lesec produced an exciting range of Châteauneufs in 2006. This cuvée includes 20% mourvèdre and is exceptionally rich and full flavoured. A keeper! 2010–2023. £148 RH19141 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos des Papes A glorious Châteauneuf: a heady and sublime mix of kirsche and wild herbs. A contender for wine of the vintage. 2014–2030. Magnums available. £148 RH20231 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Pégaü Laurence Feraud is a defender of old-school Châteauneuf and she does it rather well. Her wines are generously proportioned, very rich and ripe tasting. 2011–2022. £175 RH19241 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel Beaucastel produces one of the longest lived wines in Châteauneuf. The 2006 is a classic Beaucastel blend including 30% mourvèdre and has everything in place. 2014–2028. £188 indicates magnums available – see Order Form for prices H 50cl bottles. Page 10 In-bond price, UK delivered, per six Ref 2006 LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON REDS IN-BOND H FC15701 Maury, Cuvée Aurélie, Préceptorie de Centernach Maury enjoys high temperatures during the summer and the wines are therefore sweeter and fuller. Made from grenache with a touch of carignan, this is full bodied with Port-like sweetness. Try with blue cheese when young and eventually with chocolate. 17.5% alcohol. 2009–2017. £38 FC15751 Corbières, Château d’Aussières Aussières is the talking point of the Languedoc these days. It is a large property in the Corbières which was bought and transformed by Baron Eric de Rothschild. The vines, mostly syrah, are still young but the results are hugely impressive. The 2005 was sensational; the 2006 is almost as concentrated and even finer. 2010–2018. £45 FC15761 Faugères Maison Jaune, Domaine Jean-Michel Alquier Maison Jaune is the middle cuvée and has a large proportion of grenache. It is raised in oak for about a year and can be enjoyed young. The 2006 vintage has perfect balance in a style that looks towards the northern Rhône. 2010–2018. £49 FC15691 Collioure Côté Mer, Domaine de la Réctorie Made from equal amounts of grenache, syrah and carignan, this cuvée expresses what the Parcés like to call “côté mer” – all softness with sweet round tannins. 2009–2017. £53 FC15781 Collioure Magenca, Domaine Madeloc Pierre Gaillard does not lack ambition. His vinous empire extends from the northern Rhône to Faugères and eventually Banyuls where over a short period of time he has acquired a sizeable estate and is making delicious wines. For me this is his best red Collioure. It is a blend of grenache, syrah, mourvèdre, and, crucially, 20% carignan which brings a welcome note of freshness. 2009–2016. £53 FC15711 Banyuls, Cuvée Léon Parcé, Domaine de La Réctorie The Parcés select their best plots of grenache for this glorious, densely packed Banyuls. A chocolate wine in the making. 2010–2020. 50cl. £55 FC15681 Banyuls, Cirera, Domaine Madeloc This seems thicker and sweeter than the Léon Parcé but with the same fresh fruit flavours. A stunning dessert wine of growing complexity. 2009–2016. £58 FC15771 Faugères Les Bastides, Domaine Alquier Made from 60% syrah and 40% grenache and raised for 18 months in new oak barrels, this is one of the flagship wines of the Languedoc. The 2006, very pure and ripe tasting, is on a grand scale. 2012–2021. £63 FC15721 Collioure Côté Montagne, Domaine de la Réctorie The mountain wine is made from grenache and carignan with a little counoise. The vines are grown inland in conditions that are hotter and more arid. The wine is subsequently more dramatic and concentrated with bolder tannins. 2011–2020. £70 Page 11 In-bond price, UK delivered, per six Ref FC15611 Coteaux du Languedoc, Prieuré Saint Jean de Bébian Bébian is unquestionably one of the great wines of the Languedoc. The blend is a little less than half syrah with grenache and mourvèdre in support. The syrah is raised in new oak, the grenache in older barrels so as not to compromise the fruit. A slow burner, Bébian needs four or five years or so in bottle and then keeps remarkably well ageing like Châteauneuf. The 2006 combines power with a clean refreshing palate. 2010–2022. £73 FC15581 Le Soula, Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes, Domaine Gauby Loire-like freshness and elegance from Gérard Gauby’s high-altitude wines from the Roussillon. The blend includes cabernet sauvignon, carignan and grenache: The 2006 is a bright deep ruby and long with wildly seductive fruit. 2009–2018. £80 FC15391 Mas de Daumas Gassac, Vin de Pays de l’Herault Daumas Gassac is an unusual wine, more comfortable in the company of a Graves or a Saint-Estèphe than the Midi. It’s mostly made from cabernet but includes a wealth of other varieties brought in from as far away as Georgia. The 2006 is exquisite. 2011–2019. £83 FC15731 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Gauby Made from carignan, grenache, syrah and mourvèdre, this is a refined red that tastes of wonderfully ripe fruit without a hint of heaviness. 2010–2019. £90 FC15601 Roc d’Anglade, Vin de Pays du Gard, Domaine Pedremo Remy Pedremo, friend and disciple of Gerard Gauby, shares the same biodynamic farming methods and buys barrels from the same cooper in Austria. By farming biodynamically, he is able to pick earlier and avoid the early September rains that are common around Nîmes. Carignan dominates the blend which for all the world tastes like a Côte-Rôtie. Remy reckons the 2006 is his best vintage to date. 2011–2020. £90 FC15741 Côtes du Roussillon Villages, Muntada, Domaine Gauby There are many secrets behind the phenomenal wines of Domaine Gauby such as being able to call upon some remarkable pre-phylloxera carignan. Powerful and concentrated for sure but also elegant and timeless. 2012–2028. £205 2006 RHÔNE AND LANGUEDOC - ROUSSILLON WHITES IN - BOND FC15791 Collioure Blanc, Tremadoc, Domaine Madeloc Deliciously full and fruity white made from roussanne, vermentino and a high proportion of grenache gris, all raised in oak for about six months. 2008–2012. £42 FC15801 Côtes du Roussillon Blanc Terres Nouvelles, Préceptorie de Centernach Also from grenache gris but this time from the heights above Maury. Elegant with just a touch of oak, balanced and refreshing. Cool August nights helped preserve good fruity acidity. 2008–2014. £42 RH20241 Saint-Peray, Les Bialères, Vins de Vienne Impressive, full-flavoured dry white made from 60% marsanne and 40% roussanne, part fermented and raised in barrels of new oak. The 2006 has a refreshing seam of fruit driven acidity which cuts through the oak. 2008–2012. £50 RH20271 Saint-Joseph Grand Pompée, Paul Jaboulet Aîné A lovely cuvée of refreshing marsanne to be enjoyed from next summer. There is just enough oak to add a little complexity. 2008–2013. £50 RH19301 Crozes-Hermitage, Domaine Marc Sorrel Marc Sorrel’s vines in Crozes, half each of 60-year-old marsanne and roussanne, are grown in the oldest part of the appellation just behind Hermitage. It is a wine he does exceptionally well. The 2006 is close to the 2005 with its layers of oily lemon and honey flavours. A must for lovers of white Rhône. 2008–2018. £55 RH20281 Crozes-Hermitage, Mule Blanche, Paul Jaboulet Aîné A 50:50 marsanne-roussanne blend in a revamped style that sees less oak than in the past and has much more fruit. Delicious. 2008–2012. £55 Page 12 In-bond price, UK delivered, per six Ref RH20291 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Christophe, Domaine des Remizières An impressive white Crozes-Hermitage made from 15% roussanne and 85% marsanne with an average age of 60 years. Raised in oak for a year with 40% in new oak, this is already quite complex. Drink from autumn 2009. 2009–2017. £55 RH20301 Saint-Peray, Prestige, Domaine du Tunnel Made from 20% roussanne and 80% marsanne, half fermented and raised in wood, this is a generously flavoured, dry, fruity white Rhône with some elegance and length. Best drunk young. 2008–2012. £65 RH20311 Saint-Joseph, Le Clos Domaine Florentin Highly individual, not to say eccentric, dry white that stays in wood for two winters. It is made from slightly more roussanne than marsanne and so will go progressively nutty and honeyed with age. 2008–2017. £68 RH20331 Saint-Joseph, Les Royes, Domaine Courbis Les Royes blanc is one of the leading white Saint-Josephs and is made from 100% marsanne grown on limestone rather than the usual granite. Aged in new oak it is a deeply expressive wine, fine and rounded with an aroma of hazelnut and lemon. 2009–2015. £78 RH20341 Saint-Joseph Paradis de Saint Pierre, Domaine Coursodon A full-flavoured, barrel-raised marsanne by one of the rising stars in the northern Rhône. Jerôme Cousodon is making lovely reds but the whites are catching up. This is deliciously full and fine. 2008–2014. £78 FC15591 £80 Le Soula Blanc, Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes Amazingly fresh, Burgundian-style white of striking originality from vines grown at high altitude in the Roussillon. The wine is made by Gérard Gauby using a thoroughly eclectic mix of sauvignon blanc and grenache supported by roussanne, marsanne and chenin blanc. The 2006 is rapier clean and very long. 2009–2018. RH20421 Hermitage, Marquise de Tourette, Delas Delas make an excellent white Hermitage at a modest price. It is often one of the best wines at Delas and 2006 is no exception. Made from 100% marsanne, it has a good fruit base and plenty of length. 2009–2020. £80 RH20351 Saint-Peray, Fleur de Crussol, Domaine Voge Better known for its Cornas, Domaine Voge has important holdings of marsanne in Saint-Peray. Much of this comes from 40-year-old vines grown on limestone below the imposing Château de Crussol. Fermented and raised in oak, this is a full-flavoured dry white with a touch of minerality and a long finish. 2009–2017. £85 RH20321 Crozes-Hermitage, Domaine Roure, Jaboulet Aîné Very different in style to Mule Blanche, this is made from 100% marsanne grown on steep limestone terraces. The style is more minerally, drier and finer. 2009–2017. £88 FC15811 £88 Domaine Gauby, Vieilles Vignes, Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes Sort of Savennières-like in its mineral intensity, this is all the more remarkable because it comes from the Roussillon and is made from 40% macabeu, 30% grenache blanc, 5% carignan blanc, 10% grenache gris and 15% chardonnay. Quite fat, complex and very long. 2009–2020. RH20361 Saint-Joseph, Lieu-dit Saint-Joseph, Guigal From the heart of the appellation and from the slope that actually bears the name Saint-Joseph, this is a glorious white, mostly marsanne, already waxy, honeyed and luscious. 2009–2017. £95 RH20391 Condrieu Coteau de Chéry, Perret Exquisitely rich, golden viognier that is very ripe and fat. 2008–2014. £95 RH20401 Seyssuel Taburnum, Vins de Vienne Condrieu-like viognier from the other side of Vienne. This is more taut with more minerality but also very rich and long. 2008–2013. Page 13 £100 In-bond price, UK delivered, per six Ref M M RH20371 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Very splendid white Châteauneuf that is richly fruity, impressive and long. Made from 40% clairette and 15% bourboulenc which gives structure and 30% grenache and 15% marsanne for body. 2009–2017. £105 RH20381 Condrieu, Domaine Pichon Exceptional value Condrieu from an estate that is growing in confidence. The 2006 is a brilliant success and dangerously moreish with over 15% alcohol. 2008–2013. £105 RH20701 Condrieu, Domaine Benetière Fabulously rich and fruity viognier with just a hint of sweetness. Perfect for early drinking. 2008–2010. £105 RH19111 Hermitage Chante Alouette, Chapoutier The standard bearer for white Hermitage, the 2006 is full flavoured, fabulously rich and long. 2012–2020. Magnums available. £105 RH20411 Condrieu, Guigal From viognier, one third fermented and raised in oak and the rest in tank, this is a deliciously full and sensual Condrieu to be enjoyed in its youth. 2008–2010. £115 RH20431 Condrieu, Clos Boucher, Delas Extravagant, weighty viognier from Delas family holdings just north of Château Grillet; mouth-filling and luscious. 2009–2014. £115 RH20441 Condrieu Cuvée de Chéry, Domaine Niéro Made from old vines, this has great concentration of flavour and some lovely peachy fruit. But there is plenty of grip too so that everything is kept in balance. 2009–2014. £115 RH20451 Condrieu Le Grand Vallon, Domaine François Villard Full-bodied, dry, peachy Condrieu with added complexity coming from noble rot-affected viognier. 2008–2012. £115 RH19161 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Clos des Papes White Clos des Papes is made from equal parts of six grape varieties and fermented without the use of oak. It ages extremely well and eventually goes riesling like. The 2006 is ripe tasting yet very elegant. Either drink on release or keep to 2011–2020. £125 RH20471 Condrieu de Poncins, Domaine François Villard The vines come from the heart of the appellation on mica-rich granite close to Grillet. Opulent, concentrated and complete. 2010–2016. £130 RH20461 Hermitage Chevalier de Stérimberg, Jaboulet Aîné The Stérimberg style has changed with the 2006 vintage. There is more marsanne and less wood so today’s Stérimberg is fruitier, paler and has more grip. 2011–2020. £145 RH19261 Hermitage, Marc Sorrel 100% marsanne from the Greffieux vineyard lower down the hill of Hermitage. The 2006 has a lovely seam of freshness cutting through the richness. 2012–2021. £145 RH20481 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Château de Beaucastel Gentle, honeyed roussanne-dominated Châteauneuf that repays long keeping. Either drink on release or hold back as long as you dare. 2013–2021. £188 indicates magnums available – see Order Form for prices Page 14 MIXED CASES Southern Rhône Village Case Crozes and Saint-Joseph Case ref OC1966 at £61 A 12-bottle case containing two bottles of each of the following: Laudun, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, Château Courac Cairanne, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, Domaine de l’Ameillaud Beaumes de Venise, ‘Le Paradou’, Paul Jaboulet Aîné Vacqueyras, Saint Roch, Clos des Cazaux Vinsobres, Référence, Domaine Jaume Rasteau, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, l’Andéol, Perrin ref OC1976 at £112 A 12-bottle case containing two bottles of each of the following: Crozes Les Meyssoniers, Chapoutier Saint-Joseph, Offerus, Chave Saint-Joseph, Grand Pompée, Jaboulet Crozes-Hermitage, Cuvée Particulière, Remizières Crozes-Hermitage, Cuvée Gaby, Domaine Colombier Saint-Joseph, Cuminaille, Gaillard The 2006 Gigondas Case Languedoc First Growth Case ref OC1996 at £118 A 12-bottle case containing two bottles of each of the following: Gigondas, Sarazzine, Clos des Cazaux Gigondas la Gille, Perrin Gigondas, Domaine du Cayron Gigondas, Pierre Aiguille, Jaboulet Gigondas, Domaine les Pallières Gigondas, Moulin de la Gardette ref OC2006 at £138 A 12-bottle case containing two bottles of each of the following: Collioure Magenca, Domaine Madeloc Prieuré St Jean de Bébian Château D’Aussières Mas de Daumas Gassac Faugères Bastides, Domaine Alquier Côtes du Roussillon Villages Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Gauby Châteauneuf-du-Pape Case Northern Heights Case ref OC1986 at £149 A 12-bottle case containing two bottles of each of the following: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Crau de Ma Mère Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Font de Michelle Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de la Roquette Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Bosquet Des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Les Sinards, Perrin ref OC2016 at £185 A 12-bottle case containing two bottles of each of the following: Saint-Joseph, Domaine Sainte Epine Cornas, Grandes Terraces, Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage, Marquise de la Tourette, Delas Côte-Rôtie, Domaine Niéro Crozes-Hermitage, Alberic Bouvet, Domaine Gilles Robin Côte-Rôtie, les Bécasses, Chapoutier Page 15 When demand exceeds supply Demand for these wines will be high.
