WELCOME TO WINDWARD, MRS. HAWES!
MRS. KIM HAWES NAMED WINDWARD PRINCIPAL FOR 2016-2017
We are excited to announce that Mrs. Kim Hawes will be our principal
next year!
Mrs. Hawes is currently the principal at Vista Middle School, and is a
former teacher and principal at Eagleridge Elementary School.
Mrs. Hawes received her Master’s of Education and her Principal’s
Certificate from Western Washington University. She received her
Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies, as well as a United States History
specialization, from San Diego State University.
Mrs. Jill Iwasaki will continue in her role as Interim Principal through
the rest of the current school year to help facilitate the transition.
Windward staff and students will have the opportunity to get to know
Mrs. Hawes over the next few months.
GRADES
Q: How do I check my student’s grades?
A: While we make the transition to Canvas, your student’s
current grade percentage (not individual assignments) will
continue to be updated on Skyward every two weeks. If you
want specific information about individual assignments,
login to your student’s Canvas page with your student’s
user name and password. At the current time, the system
is not set up for us to add parents/guardians as observers
separately. We hope to have access to this feature soon.
You are always invited to contact staff by e-mail, phone, or
conference if you have questions/concerns about Canvas or
your student’s grades.
VISITORS
All visitors to the Windward High
School campus must check in at the
Main Office and wear a Visitor Badge
while on campus. Thank you for your

our staff and students!

WE ARE LEARNERS
If you saw the recent article in the Bellingham Herald, you may have already attempted to answer that
very question. The math questions included in the article were written by Windward’s math teacher, Mr.
Eddi Vulic, for the hundreds of students who participated in the Whatcom County Math Championship.
Windward math students have taken the challenge, and now it is your turn!
What is the average of the first
five even numbers?
A. 8
B. 6
C. 2
Check out this link for the rest of the
questions from the 4th grade math
contest exam:
http://www.bellinghamherald.com/
news/local/article69487547.html.
The answer is B. 6.
(2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 30/5 = 6)
Question #1:
PERFECT
ATTENDANCE!
NEW SITE FOR
SCHOLARSHIPS
Congratulations to freshmen Steven Moreau
SENIORS: A new scholarship page
has been added to the Windward
website—under STUDENTS and
PARENTS. Check it out!
and Aidan McKernan, who had perfect
attendance for Winter Trimester! Research
shows a strong correlation between student
attendance and student achievement.
KIWANIS STUDENT OF THE MONTH:
Rhiannon Ayley
Congratulations to senior Rhiannon Ayley, who was
selected as the Ferndale Kiwanis April Student of the
Month. Rhiannon has maintained a 3.9 GPA while
participating in various extracurricular school
(Anime, Creative Writing, Drama) and community
(water quality testing with NSEA, Growing Veterans,
Teen Court) activities. She is also learning natural
horsemanship helped and has earned honors at both
Windward and Whatcom Community College, where
she is enrolled as a Running Start student. Rhiannon
plans to attend the Evergreen State College next fall.
WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU,
RHIANNON!
POWER LUNCHES ARE BACK…
BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Windward is bringing back its old tradition of Power
lunches! Power Lunches are 30 minutes long and
are held once a week. During this time, a member
of the community comes to Windward to sit down
with a small group of students and have lunch with
them. Over lunch, the guest tells students about
his/her career. This is a perfect opportunity for
WHS students to learn about different careers, do
some networking, and make new connections in
the community. In order for these to happen, we
need professionals who will be able to come in and
speak. These lunches will be in May, so if you or
someone you know would be willing to come in and
share a career, please email student Jeremy Knapp
at [email protected] with
contact and career information.
COMMUNITY
WE ARE A COMMUNITY
WE ARE ACTIVE Club
Serves at the
Lighthouse Mission
LEADERSHIP
WE ARE ALL LEADERS
One of the new clubs at Windward this year is the WE ARE ACTIVE club. This club grew out of students’
desire to serve their community above and beyond the service activities that are already part of our
school traditions. Mr. Chris Perkins agreed to be their club advisor. It is so exciting to see Windward
students step up as leaders by pursuing their passions and inviting others to get involved with them!
On Monday, April 11, Mr. Perkins and five students volunteered to serve food at
the Lighthouse Mission. Dinner service volunteers are responsible for setting up
and cleaning up dinner service and serving the meal to the mission’s homeless clients. Students do also have the opportunity to interact with the clients on a limited basis. Windward students in attendance were Aaliyah Arvensis, Gwynneth
Carter, Tori Hughes, Madison Pfeifer, and Aslinn Whitemon.
This service work is the first step in a larger service learning project,
in which We Are Active club members are creating an educational
pamphlet on homelessness in Whatcom County, soliciting donations
and funds for the Lighthouse Mission from the public, preparing a
meal as part of the Culinary Arts class that is part of the upcoming
Spring Interim schedule, and returning to the Lighthouse Mission to
serve that meal on May 5.
There has been a lot of interest by Windward students in serving the homeless this year. This project
was completely planned and executed by students with help from their advisor. Students made arrangements with the Lighthouse Mission, planned our service days, chose our meal menu, and have
done all of the work to produce our educational pamphlet. We look forward to an opportunity to share
it with the public soon! We will also be looking for opportunities to raise money to support our meal
donation to the Lighthouse Mission.
On Wednesday, April 20, the We Are Active club
advisor and students members participated in
WE Day in Seattle. WE Day is a celebration of
youth making a difference in their local and
global communities. Students heard speakers
and musicians who helped students celebrate
their service and reignite their
passion to promote change in
their world. Look for more
details in a future newsletter!

Romeo and Juliet @ Mount Baker Theater
PROLOGUE
Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
And the continuance of their parents' rage,
Which, but their children's end, nought could remove,
Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage;
The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.
CREATIVITY
WE ARE CREATIVE
On Friday, April 22, the entire Windward
staff (including Mr. Rob Slater, who very
much dressed the part!) and student body
did just as William Shakespeare invited us to
do: we saw a live, professional performance
of Romeo and Juliet! Almost all students had
read and studied the play at some point in
their high school English classes and enjoyed
seeing the characters and action come to life
on the stage. We loved giving many of our
students their first experience at the Mount
Baker Theater!

Dear Parent or Guardian,
Starting in school year 2016-2017, all students in 9th through 12th grade are required by law to

vaccines or had chickenpox, then he or she will not need to get the vaccine again.
Please do one of the following:





Get a blood test to check for immunity to the disease, OR
Get a letter or signature on the Certificate of Immunization Status from a licensed
healthcare provider to verify that your student had chickenpox disease in the past, OR
Get a Certificate of Exemption signed by your licensed healthcare provider.
Please note: if you informed the school that your student had chickenpox disease before the
2013-2014 school year, then you are not required to have a licensed healthcare provider

When your student gets the chickenpox vaccine, please bring your shot record to the school
office or fill in the dates below that your student got the vaccination(s) and return this form to
