They are now going through to the final alongside the winner of the other group and the 2 winning teams who played in the same competition held on another day. CHALLENGE WORDS Friday 21st October Challenge Words anxious whizzing, bursting, crackling although, reflect, neolithic, courage hesitant , ecstatic, powerless On Wednesday our children were visited by Harriet Goodwin, a local author. Throughout the day, which was funded by the Parent and Teacher Association, Harriet worked with all Y6 pupils during two creative writing sessions and signed copies of her books for them. She also met with all children in Y1/2 to share a story and held an assembly with all Key Stage 2 pupils, in which she shared with them how she became a writer and about her ‘dream’ which inspired her to write her first novel ‘The Boy Who Fell Down Exit 43’. Harriet was extremely impressed by our school, its ethos and our pupils. We were very proud of all of our pupils and the way they conducted themselves throughout the day. We received this email from her following the visit – “I really couldn't have asked for a better day: wonderfully receptive students; a calm environment in which to work; a great sense of purpose in the school as a whole: a rare find these days. You looked after me so well, too! It was great to see the staff engage with the sessions, rather than use the time as an opportunity to get on with their marking at the back. The students saw that they were involved, and this makes SUCH a difference.” We hope to invite Harriet back soon to work with other year groups. This is what some of our Y6 pupils thought of the day… Thank you for visiting us, I mostly enjoyed you signing my book The Boy Who Fell Down Exit 43 – so far it is amazing! I enjoyed your visit and loved all of it. I love the Boy Who Fell Down Exit 43 and I’ve already finished reading it. You’ve inspired me to write a book. I loved getting my book signed. I really enjoyed your visit, especially the bit where you taught us how to open a story well and grab the reader in. Thank you for coming into our school. I enjoyed writing our openings best. Your visit was inspirational, fun and you have inspired me to write. Your books sound amazing so I’m going to get them for Christmas. I really enjoyed your visit and I love The Hex Factor book. I loved doing the opening stories and hearing about your lifetime. I thought the day was very exciting and I enjoyed spending time with Harriet Goodwin – a real author. I enjoyed the writing session with her when she explained how to make a good story beginning and how it must create atmosphere. I have had the best morning with Harriet Goodwin. I loved how she had a dream and decided to write a book about it. I liked it when she acted during our writing session with her – it was funny. Your writing inspired me to finish my story off.
