Black History Month Lessons
February is Black History Month. It is a month long celebration to recognize the contributions of African
Americans. During Black History Month, schools teach lessons about famous African Americans like Martin
Luther King, Sojourner Truth, George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, Madame C.J. Walker, Malcolm X, Dr.
Charles Drew, and others. Students also learn about other topics of interest that include: the Civil War, the
Emancipation Proclamation, voting rights, the March on Washington, and the Million Man March.

Black Wings – African American Pioneer Aviators Black Wings tells the story of how one group of Americans overcame enormous obstacles to break into
aviation. African Americans shared the universal dream of flight. But for almost 50 years after the Wright
brothers’ historic flight in 1903, racial discrimination denied black Americans access to this important sphere of
technology.
Create a Biography of an African American Pioneer in Aviation In this activity you will use the Black Wings collection, your own research, and biographical passages from this
