United Nations was created as an alternative to the previously failing League of Nations and still exists today. Alliances were created for and against communism. Europe tried to rebuild its economy by creating the EEC. The Soviet Union dominated Eastern Europe, imposing its communist beliefs. The Berlin Wall was symbolic of the Iron Curtain. The economic and political competition (communism) influenced the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The United States was threatened by communist Soviets through the Cuban Missile Crisis. Competition grew between the superpowers that resulted in new military weapons, space technology, and the threat of nuclear annihilation. Events in World War II led to independence movements in Africa and Asia. There is still tension between North and South Korea, as well as North Korea and the United States.
