AppleSeed Support
AppleSeed is a regional literary magazine showcasing the creative talents of third, fourth, and fifth grade students from
the 19 elementary schools in the communities served by the CREST Collaborative’s Enrichment Partnership: Lawrence,
Andover, Boxford, Middleton and Methuen, Haverhill, St. Augustine School (Andover), Spofford Pond School (Boxford),
Sacred Hearts School (Haverhill) and Saint Michael School (North Andover). Through its many programs, listed on page
2, the Enrichment program strives to nurture the social and cultural bonds between the communities; challenge, develop,
and showcase students’ skills and talents; provide new opportunities for students to explore, develop and succeed; and
reinforce the educational goals of the participating schools.
AppleSeed is made possible by the wealth of local talented young writers and artists, by the collaboration of the
dedicated teachers who inspire, challenge, and encourage them and by the support of individuals, foundations,
businesses, organizations, PTOs, Friends, and the school districts. We welcome your support. CREST is a 501c3 nonprofit tax-deductible public education organization.
AppleSeed is distributed free throughout the Merrimack Valley: in the schools, libraries, youth centers, seniors centers,
and other public places. Printing each issue is subject to funding. Ideally, we would like to be able to print and distribute
4,000 copies of AppleSeed to meet the demand. If you believe these magazines are valuable and can help us continue
to provide future young authors and artists the opportunity to be published, please consider supporting the
AppleSeed program with a tax-deductible contribution in any amount. Contributions will be acknowledged in the
next AppleSeed publication. Matching gifts from employers are encouraged.
Thank you for your generous support.

Friends of the CREST Apple Magazines
AppleSeed (grades 3-5), AppleSauce (grades
6-8) and ApplePi (grades 9-12) showcase and
nurture creative writing and artistic expression.
In addition, the magazines and the launch
events build connections among students and
communities. The Friends of the CREST Apple
Magazines is a group of parents, teachers,
community leaders, and professionals who have
joined to support these three extraordinary
publications. The Friends of CREST’s Apple
Magazines have five main goals:
• Ensure the magazines become financially
secure.
Friends Committee Members
• Improve and expand the distribution of the
Karen Lunny (North Andover), Krista I. McLeod (Methuen),
magazines in the community.
Gayle Henney (North Andover), Cathy Zembruski (Methuen),
• Expand the resources for teachers to use the
Louise Sandberg (Lawrence), Matthew Kraunelis (Methuen),
magazines in classrooms.
Monica Gallacher (Andover) and Leslie Quinlan (Lawrence).
• Support the growing number of high school
student assistant editors.
• Create new opportunities for students to read, exchange ideas, learn, and be recognized.
We are currently looking for more members. We meet Monday evenings three times a year. If you would like join us or
have ideas about how we can accomplish our goals, please be in touch.
About This Magazine
Welcome to the new issue of AppleSeed. Works are submitted twice a year through the advisors of the participating
schools. Thanks to the help of our community advisory board and Friends Committee, follow-up readings are held at the
public libraries and other organizations in our communities.
In addition to financial support, our areas of need include computer equipment, graphic editing software, help with
distribution, registration at launch nights, videotaping, audiotaping, editing, publicity, and recognizing the people who
make these magazines possible. If you would like to help or join us, please contact a member of our Friends Committee.
Currently, students from four high schools play an active role in our editing and publishing process (“Editorial
Interns” on page 7) of AppleSeed, AppleSauce, and our high school magazine ApplePi.
In order to reach a large readership, AppleSeed, AppleSauce and ApplePi are distributed free throughout the Greater
Lawrence community: in the schools, libraries, youth centers, seniors centers, and other public places. Each published
contributor receives two complimentary copies. A color PDF version of this entire publication (without the students’
last names) is posted online on our website, www.crestcollaborative.org. Through the hard copies (currently 2,500 copies
published, depending on funding) and electronic copies, we estimate that more than 5,000 people read each issue.
For more information please visit www.crestcollaborative.org/enrichment or contact Kristen Hollenbeck,
CREST Enrichment Director, at 978 685-3000 x 121, [email protected]. If interested in submitting to
AppleSeed, please contact your school’s AppleSeed advisor for more information. Our next issue is scheduled for publication
in April 2017.

“Reading AppleSeed as an adult, I am delighted to have a window into the psyche of current 3rd, 4th and 5th
graders. It’s a rare conduit into their dreams, hopes, joys and fears. AppleSeed gives students the opportunity to have
their poetic and artistic talents recognized by both adults and their peers in a number of communities. Having
spoken as the keynote speaker at several launch events, I have seen the pride and excitement students radiate as their
talents are recognized. This professional looking magazine gives students a chance to showcase their creativity, build
self esteem, practice public speaking and know they matter.”

Former 2-term Poet Laureate of North Andover

“These literary magazines continue to amaze me! I enjoy reading student pieces, admiring the artwork and photographs
as well as the musical notes and lyrics. The student poems and stories are wonderful examples to share with students. They
inspire the students to practice the traits of good writing and submit their own writing for publication. The competition
is challenging, but worth the effort every semester. I like to use the magazines as a rich source for writing ideas in the
classroom.”
– Marianne Levis, Friends of Apple Magazines
Matt Kraunelis
“I believe that it is important for students to participate in the arts at a young age. Early exposure to poetry, visual art,
and prose fosters an appreciation of art and culture that often proves to be a life-long companion. The Apple Magazines
offer a unique way for children to cultivate their creativity and see it through to the joy of publication. These magazines
are an indispensable asset to the students, the school system, and the entire Merrimack Valley community.”

Robert Frost Foundation & Grey Court Poets.

Honesty
You must be honest in every single way,
Because if you don’t tell the truth your lie will haunt you one day.
Honesty includes being nice and it also includes being kind
So before you lie think about it in your mind.
You should never lie, and that’s a fact,
Especially when you’ve made a pact.
Although lying may get you out of trouble,
It can also get you into trouble
You should be honest, it’s the right thing to do
If you’re honest to others, others will be honest to you
Honesty is always the best
It’s better than all the rest
Honesty is better than lying,
When you tell the truth it feels like flying
Honesty is really great,
It makes me want to celebrate!

Snowflake
Billy exclaimed, “It’s so hot! It’s December
first and it’s 90 degrees out!” His mom was not
listening to a word, because she was in front
of the fan sleeping. Billy didn’t notice she was
sleeping, so he still went in. Five minutes later,
she woke up and he was still talking. She went
along with it and just started nodding her head.
She looked outside and found that a miracle had
happened… it was finally snowing outside! They
all shouted, “It’s snowing! YAY! WOOHOO!”
Billy ran outside. It was still warm but the snow
was cool. Kids were shouting so loudly! After all
of that fun in the snow everyone went to bed. Billy
stayed up late thinking about what he saw when
he was playing.

He had seen a little gold dot; he thought it
was a little leaf. The next day it snowed again,
but this time he caught the gold dot and looked
very closely. It was a gold snowflake! He had
never seen one. He remembered his mom told him
that if you find a gold snowflake you can make
a wish. Billy wished, “I wish it would be cold for
Christmas!” Soon the air turned cold. He was so
happy he never told anyone…he let it stay as his
own secret.

The Room
I am slowly creeping up the stairs, trying not to make a sound. I see something in the
distance, I don’t know what it is. I hear a noise behind me now. I quickly turn back and
forgetting to be quiet, whisper “I know you’re here.” I wake up and find myself in a room.
It is very tiny. It has pink walls and an olive green floor. I manage to get up, but I am more
crammed than before. I am about to lie back down, but the walls start closing in. There is
only enough room for me to squat. I look up, hoping to find an exit, but all I find is a slimy
monster. Its eyes are red with only a little twinkle of silver. His slime is the color of an olive. I
regret sitting on the ground.
I see a shadow the color of ash. I don’t know where it is coming from. Now I see a door
appear. It’s shiny, black and transparent. I try to touch the doorknob, but the door backs
away. I try to go to the door. The walls start closing in. I try to run, but I am too late. I can
feel the heavy pressure of cold, dirty concrete. I am very unhappy. I try to squirm out, but
instead my arm is squeezed and is broken. I am trying to scream loudly. The agony!
The walls start to part. I feel the cold night air breezing by. I am relieved. I see the
person who is making the shadow. I hear someone say, “Time for school, wake up.” I am
awake. What a dream! I go eat my breakfast.

The Stormy Night
I was curled up in my warm fuzzy comforter
ready to start a new book. I was perched by the
fire feeling the warm gust of crackling wood.
Then, I felt my body shake. I saw a glimpse of
shocking, deafening white light. The fire flickered
to a stop. One minute it was there, yet the next
minute it wasn’t. A rush of fear came across my
bones. The lights started to flicker. My mind racing
about. I calmed myself saying, “Everything is okay
and it is just a passing storm.”
Right on cue, the blaring sirens went wild!
I leapt up, not a second to spare. My heart felt
as heavy as a whale. I knew exactly what to do
in situations like these. With a tippity-toe and a
thumpety-bump, I fumbled down the stairs. My
body beat with my heart. What would happen to
my house? Where would there be damage? Can
I go get my book? Questions raced through my
head like they were running a marathon.
The audience clapped and hooted! I was a
great actor for my school play!

I was sledding down the path. I was as cold

still wouldn’t stop big old me. I walked down the
sledding path to get my sled. The wind blew me
down and my hand started to bleed. I was as
angry as could be. So I yelled at the wind. “I will
keep on trying, I will never give up!” So I got back
up. The wind blew me down again, but I got back
up. I reached my sled. I had finally beaten the
wind.

What Is Now?
A rock in the stream of endless time,
A word on a page of cool, sweet rhyme,
A single stitch in a fabric gold,
A flicker of warmth in forever cold,
That’s now.
A star like a flame in forever dark,
A piece of peace while a choir harks,
A tiny flake in a blizzard white,
An opened eye after losing sight,
That’s now.
A whisper in the ear of a lonesome girl,
A speck of a raindrop in a wide blue world,
An arrow whisked at a flighty deer,
A hug that steals away your fear,
That is now.

Crispy Campfires
“Crunch,” my hot and fluffy vanilla
marshmallow, lightly coated with yummy milk
chocolate and topped with golden graham
crackers said in my mouth. It gave a sweet flavor
and exploded with delicious and crispy taste.
Heavily packed with wood, the fire sizzled and
crackled as its red hair angrily waved through the
air with violence. Rising smoke made its way into
my nose, giving a harsh smell. “Shh!” the night
sky whispered as silent as possible. Sparkling
stars in the night sky beamed brightly down at the
world like diamonds. Trees danced and swayed
as if they were saying goodbye. Stories were
told about the majestic tribes that had once lived
before us. Making this moment last forever would

Reveals itself and opens
The colors take their place in the sky
The sun starts to say goodbye
And lowers itself into the curtain of shadows
Speechless I watch
As the next page appears
The ocean reflects off of the sun
And the clouds slowly turn pink
My heart starts to open up it’s shell
I feel the miseries fly away
I am captured into a big ball of light
And my imagination starts to flow
I am wrapped in a blanket of colors
And I feel the heat on me
I’m a glowing ball of happiness
Ready to take flight and soar
I am lowered to the ground
The colors face away
I can’t see the sun anymore
I search for it
But it’s nowhere to be found

and looked around at the trees and then I saw something strange deep in the forest. The bear prints led
straight to it. Half way to it, I saw her, the momma bear fishing in the stream. She lifted her head and looked
me straight in the eye, then continued to fish. She stopped fishing and led me to the strange thing I saw
earlier and it turned out to be a cave with a papa bear and five cubs. I jumped off my horse to get a closer
look. As my horse grazed by the small stream, I sat and watched the family of bears. After a short while, I
decided it was time to go home. I got back on my horse and followed the bear prints back to the edge of the
forest. Then I rode home to tell everyone what had happened.

A Long Time Ago
Aztecs and Mayans set sail in the sea
Vikings and Greeks bow down on their knees
Seeing the emperors rise into the sky,
They feel their gods are sky high!
Indian Americans slaughtering their enemies,
Then they simply become frenemies!
Vikings sailing long ships to their docks,
Aztecs making sun clocks,
Indian Americans riding horses,
And Aztecs making guacamole with lots of avocados,
And all of that is in motion
I wonder back then if they had lotion?
A long time ago...

Cars are zooming one by one,
So get up.
You might be bumped.
Get off the road, and find your way.
Hope it doesn’t snow when we go on our way,
But there it snowed
And I’m so c-cold.
Let’s go inside
And call our parents
Or are we stuck?
Let’s get out of this mess.
Look at that small cat
She looks cold too!
Let’s go save her
Yes indeed.
Yay… the snow is starting to clear up.
Oh no the cars are still zooming one by one
What do I do?
I can’t even think!
The cars are so loud,
Someone is coming towards me
Oh…
It’s my MOM!
Yay… Let’s go home and have a nice day!

Prairie Poem
Inspired by Sarah, Plain and Tall
The sun is a beautiful fireball in the sky
Making beautiful orange lines across the field, like lasers
Yellow, orange layers circle the sun like the yolk of an egg
A lonely prairie house surrounded by endless fields of grass
Giant trees hovering over the open field
Lonely trees waving and dancing in the wind
The field wears a beautiful coat of fuzzy grass
The trees look like sandy grass behind the open prairie
Clouds are like orange snakes slithering through the sky
The clouds look like an old man’s puffy grey beard in the sky
Dark clouds over the prairie
Gray clouds are like galloping sheep

The snow was falling all through the night.
As you wake up you will see the daylight,
When you look out your window the sun’s
shining bright.
And when you look down all you will see is white.
When you get downstairs and have your
snow stuff on,
Go outside and play all day long.

If I Made A Million Dollars
With a million dollars my life would change
like crazy, and I mean crazy! The first thing I
would do is buy a modest house with magnificent
furniture. That way I would have enough money
for food and I could travel to different places like
Florida, Maryland, or Connecticut. Then I would
still have money left over to save with the interest I
earned. If I saved, I could also have money for all
my taxes and bills. The most expensive thing is a
mansion and that is exactly why I’m not buying a
mansion. I know they’re wonderful and all but no!
Now the last thing I would buy is a pug. If I had
a million dollars that is what I would do. But if I
didn’t have a million dollars I would simply cry a
lot….and dream.

Once there was a boy named Danny and he
loved making snowmen. He once made 12 in one
day! One winter day he was making snowmen
and he went inside to get some hot chocolate. But
when he came back out he got hit by a snowball.
At first he thought it was his sister but his sister
was inside! Then he noticed one of his snowmen
was walking. Then he noticed all of them were
moving and throwing snowballs at him. He tried
to run into them and stop them but it didn’t work.
Then they started walking into town. He tried
to warn the people in the town, but they didn’t
listen. He only got one person to listen and that
was his best friend Tyler. They finally got an idea.
They were going to throw the snowballs back at
them. But they needed to be big. They got a lot
of big snowballs and started throwing them at
the snowmen. The snowmen started falling on the
ground when they got hit. Finally they got all of
them. They were the heroes of the town.

When You Become An Adult
At first life was all fun and games
But when you become an adult,
It feels like you need to burst into flames.
Bills, rent, and money debts,
Don’t forget everyday train wrecks.
Frauds, hackers, and identity thefts,
You need to get good insurance,
To get away from those threats.
Make them stop, make them pay,
They need to be sorry for what they do every day.
You need to be ready,
For all of the bumps in life.
You’ll always be happy,
With the decisions you make.
It will all come through,
With the risks you take.

Sad Snowman
There was a snowman who was outside all
day and night. No child wanted to play with him;
All of the kids laughed at him. The kids thought
he looked funny. His nose was out of shape. His
hat was ripped. He always wanted a friend. He
wished for a nice friend who played with him all
the time.
Then one day the snowman went around and
around for some friends and he could not find any
people or kids to be his friend. So the snowman
walked home. On the way home, the tears fell
down his face. The next day some kids came to his
snow house and said, “Do you want to play?” The
snowman said, “Really?”
So they went outside and they played together.
They had so much fun. The next day the snowman
said, “I am so glad I made a new friend that
likes me and plays with me.” Then, when the boy
came back the next day, he was so sick of the
snowman that he started to cry. Then the snowman
said to himself, “Now how am I going to find a
new friend?” Then the snowman went to the boy’s
house. He looked in the boy’s window to see if
the boy was okay. The snowman was too small so
he jumped. Then the snowman saw a little of the
boy’s house. The snowman thought that he looked
okay. The next day, when the snowman was
outside, he heard a small voice.
It was the boy! The snowman was happy that
the boy was okay. The snowman asked the boy,
“Do you want to play?” The boy was so happy that
the snowman wanted to play, he said yes. Then
they rolled down the snowy hill. When they were
done playing, they went in the little boy’s house
and they all drank hot cocoa with marshmallows.
The snowman and the boy had a really good time.
Then the snowman said, “Do you want to play
tomorrow?” the boy happily said, “Yes.”

The Bunny and the Wolf
Not too long ago in an evergreen forest, there
was a bunny and a wolf. The bunny was hopping
around trying to get some grapes that were
growing on the vine of an evergreen tree. Then
came the wolf. “Those are my grapes,” snarled the
wolf. “Pluck! Haha simple!” And he brought them
back to his den. “Oh well, I better go look for more
food,” said the bunny with a tone of sadness in his
voice. “Wha- what was that?” said someone from
the distance. “Huh?” grunted the wolf, shutting off
his television. He put on his winter coat and when
he turned around there were hunters surrounding
his door. Thud! the bunny tackled the wolf and
then attacked the hunters. “Take that-hyyyah!” He
scared the hunters away. “Bunny, how could I ever
thank you?” And from that day on, the bunny and
the wolf were friends. The moral of the story is
to be nice to everyone, because you never know
when you might need them.

Up The Mountain
A fresh autumn zephyr quickly blew in the car, like a cheetah at full speed. I’m dumbfounded as I’m
looking at the colorful, crisp, and dry autumn leaves. It was a clear day and the blue magnificent sky
stretched over the horizon. High flying birds were singing a song so beautifully that my ears were doing a
happy dance. As the cool gentle breeze loudly blew in the car, it gave me a chill down my spine. The road
was filled with dead, curled up leaves that had slowly fallen from the towering, gracefully swaying trees. All
the air tasted like the fresh pine from the massive, green pine trees. On the mountain below, the stunning red,
orange, and yellow vibrant leaves were glorious. In the vast autumn woods to my right, some rotting dead
trees had fallen to the ground like a wounded deer. Finally, we’re at the top of the brilliantly colored autumn
mountain, and I’m slowly looking down at the landscape full of gorgeous autumn leaves, and it is by far the
most amazing sight of my life.

“Next up, we have Mikayla DeFrank, Chloe Barns, and Callie Roberts swimming the 50 breaststroke,”
the loud speaker booms over all the swimmers and parents. Shaking, I climbed up on the diving block and
stood up. I looked to my left and saw Chloe put on her neon goggles as bright as the sun. An evil grin
spread across her face. To my right, Callie. Checking her nails, she glanced up and gave me a look that
seemed like she saw a flying tomato! “Take your mark, GO!” I dove in and burst into kicking like there was
no tomorrow, “Come on, come on!” I thought. My goggles started to slip but I couldn’t put them on now.
“3…2…1” YES! YES! I WON! “Mikayla! Mikayla!” I hear a muffled voice in my head. “Mikayla, it’s time

The Wackiest Sandals
I thought it was going to be an ordinary day, but boy was I wrong. I bought sandals with clouds and rain
drops at Payless. The straps were rainbow color. Unusual. I liked them.
I put them on in the store. I walked outside, I got ready to turn right, towards home... but my feet turned
left! It was as if the wacky sandals were in control. I tried to stop to take them off, but my feet wouldn’t let me.
Next, I quickly realized that the sandals were going to take me wherever they wanted. The sandals walked
me up Andover Street, slowly. After a few miles the sandals turned left up Lawrence Street. They started
picking up speed. I passed my two friends and they shouted, “I’ve seen those sandals. You should outsmart
them before you get hurt.” Then the wacky sandals moved me to the right to the Public Pool. They were in
a line to jump off the diving board into the pool. It was my turn and I asked the lifeguard, “Is this shallow
water?” Then someone pushed me into the pool and I yelled, “I don’t know how to swim in the deep water!”
The wacky sandals were pulling me down underwater! The lifeguard jumped in and tried to pull me out of
the sandals. The lifeguard screamed, “Get a rope and throw it into the pool so she can hold it and I can take
off the sandals underwater.” It was like a group of sharks underwater. Then finally the wacky sandals came
off my feet.
I swam up to the top of the pool and I looked down and saw my sandals were still there. I sure hope
those wacky sandals know how to swim.
