DMU Square Mile The Concept - Academic led ideas that respond to community need. - Students deliver activities, putting their knowledge & skills to the test. - Communities become stakeholders in activities, helping them grow and evolve over time. Why this format? - Accountability: Gives us consistent buy in with the community. - Supports academics in promoting research & employability agendas. - Gives students a chance to put their skills to the test & challenge themselves. Schools engagement - Focus on support schools that require improvement or are in special measures. - Tailored support activities built around schools requirements. - Also includes campus based activities. Tailored activities - 300 students currently providing 1-1 support for children this year. - SALT students & staff helping up-skill NQT's in phonics. - 400 children will have learnt how to code by June 2016. - Translation support for 27 different languages. Health & Well-Being - Broad theme, covering everything from diabetes support, to basic IT training. - Supporting the community to develop their skills & improve their health. - Also involves creating "pop up" themed shops in the City Centre. Follow on support - Multiple audiology clinics to support in diagnosis. - Student led activities supporting community members to access their GP's. - Increasing the impact of activities and also creating more opportunities for students. Student engagement - 630 individual students registered with one or more Square Mile activities in the first 2 weeks of term. - Course related volunteering & placements, with achievements recorded & rewarded.- - Target of 2,000 students for this year. Staff opportunities - Every staff member has a chance to take part in activities. - From app ideas to benefit society, to filling School Governor vacancies across the City. - Comprehensive programme of activity designed to help Leicester's refugees & refugee support agencies. Sustainability - Ideas evolve with the community. - Part of De Montfort's strategic plan. - Continue to support a range of areas (public good, academic promotion, student experience). - Continue to raise the profile of the institution.
