2011-2012 Inspiration and opportunity – thanks to you A heartfelt thank you goes to every donor for your generosity and dedication to the institution in which we share pride. During a period of significant change, the University of Bath stands strong. As the Sunday Times University of the Year 2011-12, I want to thank you for the important role philanthropic support plays in maintaining excellence here at Bath. The impact of our research has been formally recognised by the Queen’s Anniversary Prize; our students are officially amongst the happiest in the UK; and bucking the national trend, applications to study here are on the rise. We cannot achieve these things without you – supporting a record number of scholarships, funding valuable academic projects and providing no end of opportunities for our students makes a world of difference. Thanks to our prudent financial management over the last few years, we are now in a position to make a strategic, step-change investment in our campus with plans for developments totalling £100 million over the next three years. These developments will see a transformation of facilities for students and staff and I look forward to working with our alumni, friends and supporters to realise our shared ambitions. Your commitment this year, as in previous years, is remarkable – thank you. Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell DBE DL Vice-Chancellor It gives me great pleasure to offer thanks on behalf of all members of the student body for your kindness in donating to the University of Bath. The scope of the Alumni Fund has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Whilst the continued support of student groups is highly valued, recently we have seen expansion into more campus-wide activities. This has meant that the Fund has had a direct effect on the experience of more students than ever. In particular I would like to highlight two recent grants, the enhancement of the Student Centre and the Freshers’ Week halls t-shirts (see page 24). Not only do both of these improve the student experience, they also create an even stronger bond to the University and, ultimately, to the alumni community. It is this bond that has no doubt led to your generosity and is one which only grows stronger over time. On a personal note, I take great pride in my association with the University. This is mostly due to those of you who have come before me, who have shaped this University and its reputation, both through your time spent studying here and after you have left. Chris Clements (BSc Economics 2011) Students’ Union President 2012-13 Editor: Joanna Sochacka Design: Richard Box Photography: Nic Delves-Broughton, unless otherwise stated, © University of Bath Contents I t has been an outstanding year for the University and I am delighted to be able to report to you – a record number of Bath alumni, friends and current students – on how your contribution has made a real difference. Every gift is an invaluable vote of confidence in Bath, and your commitment inspires our students to achieve all that they can, in spite of the harsh economic climate. The alumni-led Dragons’ Den (see page 18) is a shining example of how Bath is leading the way in this regard; seeing such an opportunity provided for the students of today, by the students of years gone by, entrepreneurs all, is something to behold. As my first year in post draws to a close there is much on the horizon. The media is awash with talk of harnessing the success and enthusiasm surrounding the Olympic and Paralympic Games, yet in Bath’s case the wheels are already in motion. September saw the launch of our legacy to 2012 – a research initiative to improve the lives of those living with disabilities – and we are very excited about the prospect of the results in the years to come. 4.The 2012 legacy Your impact on 2012 and beyond 8.A global conscience Helping to bridge the divide 10.Gift of opportunity Making the University what it is today 16.Maximising the impact of giving Using gifts to their greatest potential 18.The Bath Advantage Giving our students the best possible start 24.Building your community Supporting your alumni network 28.Strength in numbers The power of the Alumni Fund 30.Facts and statistics The year in numbers Your generosity means that we can press onwards, with our heads held high. Thank you. Mr Gavin A. Maggs Director of Development and Alumni Relations Donor Report 2012 The 2012 legacy I n such a momentous year for sport in the UK we are proud that the University has made a valuable contribution both on and off the field. It would not have been possible without your help. Providing for some of the most talented athletes to study and train here; awarding special travel grants to enable students to compete internationally; and ensuring that Bath will maintain its reputation as one of the forerunners in the field – your gifts have meant that the University has put its stamp on 2012 and beyond. The best sporting chance I felt like I arrived home as my professors and colleagues were like my family. I really want to thank the Trendell Family and I am honoured to be one of the recipients of the scholarship.” For some up-and-coming young athletes it can be hard to choose between continuing studies or pursuing their training, yet at Bath – the first UK university to formalise sports scholarships – with your help it is possible for them to do both. We have also been tracking the progress of Trendell Scholar Jack Green (Sports Performance) as he took a break from studies Hadia Hosny El Said last year to train full time – and the extra work The Trendell Family Sports Scholarships resulted in his selection for the Olympics in the men’s 400m were set up thanks to a legacy from alumnus and Football hurdles and 4x400m relay team. He was agonisingly close Blue Jeff Trendell (BSc Economics & Administration to a medal as the 4x400m relay team finished fourth – 1970) and are continued by his family. They are awarded well done, Jack! to students who have demonstrated exceptional talent not only in their sport, but also in their academic studies; and its recipients have not disappointed. Trendell trio become World Last year badminton player Hadia Hosny El Said came to study and train at Bath knowing that she had a tremendous balancing act ahead of her. For a year Hadia combined a packed schedule of training and international fixtures with studying for her full-time Masters, yet she finished at the top of her game. She recently represented Egypt at her second Olympic Games and has maintained consistently high academic standards, due to graduate this winter with an MSc in Medical Biosciences. She said: “I have enjoyed every second, whether studying for my MSc, or practising badminton with the best team and coach I ever had in my life. “It was such a hard time between travelling, tournaments and coursework but whenever I came back to the University 4 University Champions Three University of Bath students ended an unforgettable season as World University Netball Champions, and were helped every step of the way by alumni. Kadeen Corbin, Yasmin Parsons and Mia Ritchie, all sports performance students, made up one quarter of the 12-strong Great Britain squad for the championships, which took place in Cape Town in July. Their achievements are particularly remarkable as the sport has suffered from lack of funding this year, having not been selected for the Olympics. As Yasmin explains: “Expenses were no longer paid to each player as England Netball could not afford the costs. I had to pay for accommodation, travel and food each time there was a training weekend, which was once a month.” Donor Report 2012 Donors “I really want to thank the Trendell Family and I am honoured to be one of the recipients of the scholarship.” This has meant that philanthropic funding has been particularly valuable to the young women. They are all supported by a Trendell Scholarship and have proven to be worthy recipients throughout their time here. They have gone from strength to strength, making a significant impact on domestic netball as part of the team that won the British Universities and Colleges Sport Championships this year for the first time in four years and claiming international success this summer. Yasmin continues, in a letter to the Trendell Family: “Without your award I think the chances of maintaining my netball career would have been slim. I am very grateful for your generosity and willingness to help.” A sports scholarship can open doors to those who are truly deserving, helping those with the greatest potential to go that extra mile – both in their sport and academically. Many thanks go to all those who support sport at Bath and have contributed to our success in an unforgettable year. This October we welcome the first of the Bill Whiteley Sports Scholars, awarded to academically able students with outstanding sports potential; long may our success in the field continue. 1968 Dr Norman Biddington Mr David Fletcher Dr Ivor Metherell Dr Francis Murphy Mr Melvyn Newbery Mr Brian Nichols Mr Leslie Perrett Ms Patricia Two & Mr Malcolm Two Mr Roger Winchester 1969 Mr Les Baker Mr Mike Collins Mr John Crookes Mrs Janet Jenkins Dr Roderick King Mr Henri Lloyd Davies Dr Keith Melford & Mrs Heather Melford Mrs Rosemary Milward Dr David Phillips & Mrs Heather Waldron Dr Kenneth Symes Dr Stephen Vincent-Davies Mr Richard Whitfield Two Anonymous Donors 1970 Ms June Abbott Professor Douglas Altman Mr Clive Barons Mr Eric Bottomley Mr Michael Boulton Mr Mike Carr Mr Roger Cooke Mr Roy Edgar Mr Roger Elliman Mr Roger Ellmore Ms Evelyn Godley Mr Paul Green Professor Grant E Hearn Mrs Pauline Hempsey Mr James Hillier Mr Lyndon Hughes Dr Alan Legge Mr John May Dr Stephen Moss Mr Alan Pearce Mr Martin Pobjoy Dr Steve Richards Mr Chris Salter Mr Mike Shorten Mr Brian Smith Mr Ivor Spector Mr Barry Stote Mr Ray Weston Three Anonymous Donors 1971 Mr Terence Birmingham Mr John Bone & Mrs Penelope Bone Mr Phil Chambers Mr Jim Dewar Dr Godfrey Draper Dr George Dyer Professor Kevin Edge Mr John Frankel Mr Michael Godwin & Ms Beatrice Godwin Mr Cyril Golding Mrs Thelma Hooper Mr Paul Ketchley Mr Ian Longworth Dr Roland Newman Mr Kenneth Organ Ms Sarah Palmer Mr Ken Riley Mrs Iona Roberts Mr Adrian Schwalb Mr Peter Seaborne Mrs Mary Sykes Mr Peter Williams 10 Anonymous Donors “I was a student in the 60s, housed in a Terrapin on the pre-University CAT site in Bristol… I give back because of warm memories of my years there and of learning a lot more than just through academic studies.” Mike Ross (BSc Applied Physics 1967), Alumni Fund Donor Donor Report 2012 5 The 2012 legacy A Paralympic legacy Bath, a home from home for the ParalympicsGB team, is in an unmatched position to change the lives of the disabled population. Three years ago, the University was selected to host the team’s preparation camps in the lead up to 2012, and in August more than 200 team members from 10 sports attended the camp before transferring to the Games Village. The University is also the permanent training base for many elite disabled sportsmen and women, including athletes Katrina Hart (BSc Sports Performance 2011) and Kate Grey (BA Coach Education & Sports Development 2010), and is proud to count public figures Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE (Honorary LLD 2010), Chris Holmes (Honorary LLD 2012) and Ben Rushgrove (BSc Sports Performance 2009) amongst its alumni. Testament to the quality of facilities, training and elite sport science here, we are proud to have been so well represented at the 2012 Paralympic Games; current students, alumni and TeamBath athletes brought home a host of medals and sincere congratulations are due to all who competed. Our recognised expertise in elite sports science and medicine has provided a foundation from which to launch a new initiative to improve the lives of those living with disabilities, a field which has traditionally lacked research; and Bath is well-placed and prepared to take the lead. Two significant gifts, totalling over £400,000, have kick-started this initiative. The Susan Whorrod Fellow in Disability Health and the Medlock Fellow in Military Veteran Health & Wellbeing will drive research into the health benefits of regular exercise for those living with disabilities. The opportunity to translate the findings from elite athletes to the wider disabled population, including military veterans, is unparalleled. As Susan Whorrod explains: “I am investing in this research because I am interested in seeing if the application of sport science can provide a significant benefit to the well-being of those with physical disabilities. I would also be interested to see if the research can be extended in the future to include those with mental health issues.” This philanthropic funding has been instrumental to the establishment of the new DisAbility Sport & Health (DASH) Research Group, which will facilitate a cross-disciplinary approach “This will cement the University’s position as a leader in this field.” to the wider health and wellbeing issues of the disabled population. Combining pioneering research with student and community engagement, this initiative aims not only to improve the day-to-day lives of those living with disabilities but also shift perceptions of disability, in order to build a legacy to the Paralympics here at Bath that lasts beyond 2012. Dr James Bilzon, Head of the Department for Health, said: “I am extremely grateful to the Whorrods and the Medlock Trust for enabling the establishment of two Research Fellowships in the DisAbility Sport & Health Research Group here at Bath. I am delighted that the Centre has received such support, which will attract excellent scholars, allowing us to build capacity and commence fundamentally important programmes of research. This will cement the University’s position as a leader in this field.” Paralympic medal winners Paul Blake: silver, Men’s 400m T36; bronze, Men’s 800m T36 Katrina Hart (BSc Sport Performance 2011): bronze, Women’s 4 x 100m relay T35/T38 Liz Johnson: bronze, 100m breaststroke SB6 Alexandra Rickham (BSc Natural Sciences 2004): bronze, Sailing – SKUD 18 Ben Rushgrove (BSc Sports Performance 2009): bronze, Men’s 200m T36 David Smith (Sports Performance 2009): gold, Rowing Mixed Coxed Four – LTAMix4+ Ben Rushgrove 6 Donor Report 2012 Today’s students, tomorrow’s leaders Gifts to the Alumni Fund have paired exceptional students with unique sporting opportunities not only on, but also off, the field. Anna Ross (BSc Sport & Exercise Science 2012) spent a year working at the New South Wales Institute of Sport in Sydney, based in the city’s Olympic Park, the site of the 2000 Games. She worked with elite and emerging athletes across a wide range of sports, and undertook testing, technical analysis, psychology and physiotherapy, all with the view to helping athletes to achieve their full potential on an international stage. Anna said: “This placement has confirmed my goal to work with top athletes, coaches and sport scientists. I feel so fortunate to have had this amazing opportunity to experience the elite side to sports science in an amazing country. I would like to take this chance to say thank you to the Alumni Fund for their grant that helped support me during my unpaid placement.” Anna at work “It’s an opportunity to give a little back to the university that gave me so much.” Elton d’Souza (BSc Chemistry 1982), Alumni Fund Donor Charlie with the New Zealand Olympic team Charlie Burn (Coach Education & Sports Development 2009-13) has spent the year working with Athletics New Zealand, allocating funding to talented athletes and assisting with the coordination of performances in the buildup to the 2016 Olympics. He also had the chance to gain first-hand experience of supporting a team during the Games, having extended his placement to help the New Zealand Olympic team this summer. These students are tomorrow’s leaders in sports science, psychology and development. It has provided sound evidence to inform the decisions of policy makers in the UK and abroad, improving the quality of life for families and addressing extreme poverty. © Roy Maconachie Donations help to drive research in this important field forwards by providing funding for academic study, scholarships and student placements. Your support, when combined with the University’s recognised expertise in the field, promotes an international exchange of ideas, bridging the divide between the developed and the developing world. Launching a decade of research into poverty International exchange of ideas The University has received a substantial anonymous donation to establish an International Development Postdoctoral Fellowship Fund. The Fund will support international development researchers at the University’s Centre for Development Studies for the next 10 years. We are delighted that Dr Shahid Perwez has been appointed as the first International Development Postdoctoral Fellow. His research focuses on understanding gender inequality and child survival in India, including female infanticide. Philanthropic support has created opportunities for outstanding students from some of the world’s poorest areas to receive a first-class education here at the University. Last year the International Development Postgraduate Scholarships, funded by an anonymous donor, and the Windle Trust Scholarship, funded by Windle Trust International, provided for three such students to study here and graduate with an MSc in International Development. This gift will expand the Centre’s internationally-renowned work and attract the brightest early-career academics in this field to Bath, allowing us to drive international development research forward to effect real change in the world’s poorest areas. 8 The Windle Trust Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit, the leadership potential of the recipient and development impact it will have. Windle Scholar Doreen Abalo plans to use her degree to work in conflict and poverty-stricken countries. She said: “I now have a better view of what I can contribute Donor Report 2012 to making this world a better place to live in. My appreciation goes out to those who willingly pooled their resources together despite the economic hardships to help people like me gain an internationally recognised education. I am so grateful.” Douglas Akaligaung and George Muruka were awarded International Development Postgraduate Scholarships, and will return to Africa better equipped for a career in the field. George said: “Attending my course at the University of Bath will significantly influence my future professional work back in Kenya and across Africa. The opportunity has broadened my world view and I feel I now have a much wider horizon than before.” Douglas Akaligaung and George Muruka Planting the seeds The nature of a career in international development can often prevent those with enormous potential and the desire to help from choosing this path; long-distance travel is essential and volunteering is often the only way to gain necessary hands-on experience. Collective gifts to the Alumni Fund help such students to overcome this barrier, setting them on the way to fulfil their ambition to break down the inequality divide. Lewis Brimblecombe (BSc Politics with Economics 2012), an Alumni Fund Scholar, has now left the University to work at the company where he completed his placement year while at Bath, GRM International. He will work implementing British Government International Development programmes in some of the poorest and most conflictaffected parts of the world. He said: “A scholarship from the University of Bath has been vital in giving me the confidence to pursue my ambition to work in international development. Being recognised for excellence at the age of 18 has pushed me to achieve as much as I possibly could.” Alumni Fund placement grants have also enabled students to gain invaluable experience on the ground. Amy Boardman (Economics 2009-13) spent a year in Malawi working on the expansion of the macadamia industry, a profitable business that creates opportunities for the country’s poor and disadvantaged. Toby Lewis-Donaldson (Economics 2009-13) also went to Malawi to work for a consultancy firm, analysing the impact of a social cash transfer scheme amongst other projects, and Charlie Young (Sociology & Social Policy 2010-14) spent time in Ghana working on an HIV/AIDS project with a women’s refuge. University welcomes latest signatory to the Chancellor’s Roll of Honour The Enid Linder Foundation’s loyal support of the University was recognised and celebrated at the Chancellor’s Dinner on 4 July 2012. The University’s Chancellor Lord Tugendhat welcomed the Foundation’s Trustees, Mr Jack and Mrs Audrey Ladeveze, into the Chancellor’s Roll of Honour, which honours outstanding levels of philanthropy and commitment to the University. The Enid Linder Foundation gives grants to promote medical education, research and the arts, and has a long history of support for the University’s Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics. The Centre specialises in bringing together research linking engineering and clinical orthopaedics in fields such as joint replacements, bone graft materials and methods, and fracture healing. The Foundation has supported a range of activities at the Centre. PhD Scholarships have attracted outstanding postgraduate research students and funding has allowed for the recruitment of part-time research officers. The Foundation has also supported a ‘patient functional evaluation facility’, which aims to improve patient diagnosis. The Enid Linder Foundation began to support the Centre following a grant application. Jack Ladeveze said: “We were so very impressed with the programme and the enthusiasm of the whole team that we had little difficulty in persuading the other three Trustees to offer the funding requested. That was in 2005 and we hope to continue for some years.” Professor Tony Miles, Head of the Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics, said: “The research students are the life blood of the Centre, helping us to sustain leading research activities in orthopaedics. The part-time research officers are integral to the Centre, supporting our research students and also our visiting orthopaedic surgeons. “This funding has been of immense value to help us to both sustain and grow our research activities in the Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics and we are extremely indebted to the very generous support from the Enid Linder Foundation.” Jack and Audrey Ladeveze sign the Chancellor’s Roll of Honour 10 Donor Report 2012 Rolls of Honour The Rolls of Honour recognise exceptional continuing philanthropic support to the University. The importance of scholarships in this current economic climate is reflected in the number of donors who last year gave the gift of a scholarship, a gift of opportunity, to those who have financial barriers to overcome but show exceptional academic promise. Yet here at the University of Bath a scholarship means more than financial support. Throughout their time here scholars are invited to meet their donors, fellow scholars and other members of the alumni community. Our annual Charter Day is one such opportunity, enabling scholarship recipients to thank their donors, and donors to meet the students whose lives they have changed. And for many, this is just the beginning; in a donor, the individual scholarship holder can gain a mentor, contact and friend. Present at last year’s Charter Day were local philanthropists Brian and Margaret Roper, who have a unique way of staying in contact with the students. “My own sense of ability was fundamentally bolstered by the recognition at 18 that an institution as prestigious as the University of Bath thought I was worth backing.” Lewis Brimblecombe, BSc Politics with Economics 2012, Alumni Fund Scholar Brian (Honorary DBA 2009) explains: “We keep in touch with our scholars at annual dinners in groups of eight. We get a feel about their progress and development, both of which are very obvious. We enjoy and are refreshed by these increasingly relaxed dinners and delighted that they all continue to attend. Responses suggest we have something to offer them, other than the food, after all!” Edward Goldsmith and Richard Admiraal Edward Goldsmith (Business Administration 2010-14), who receives the Suzanne Admiraal Scholarship funded by Richard Admiraal (BSc Business Administration 1982), said: “I want to thank Richard for his continued support and advice. Not only has he given me great financial support and confidence in my abilities in awarding me this scholarship, I feel I have met someone I can look up to and who will be a great mentor to me as I continue through university and beyond.” Brian and Margaret Roper funded an undergraduate scheme in 2010 which will see 100 students supported throughout their academic studies. 12 Donor Report 2012 “Mr and Mrs Roper genuinely care about us and our development. I am amazed at how much they remember about us.” Chelsea Lau, Roper Scholar A scholarship at Bath means that the holder has been formally recognised for their outstanding commitment to academic studies. The confidence instilled in them upon the receipt of a scholarship to study here stays with them throughout their lives. Whilst we cannot predict what the future will bring, we can guarantee that the University of Bath will be at the forefront of new discoveries, having a global impact. Our thanks go to our legacy pledgers who help ensure that whatever the future holds, the University will continue to inspire future leaders and respond to the world’s most pressing challenges. Anthony Smith (BPharm Pharmacy 1983, PhD Pharmacy & Pharmacology 1987) explains why he has chosen to leave a gift in his Will: “As a former student, and former member of staff of the University, I believe in its fundamental ethos and values; its passion for support of students and world-class research is compelling. I know that by leaving a gift in my Will I am able to ensure that future generations benefit from Bath’s excellence and that they will be as inspired as I was.” The 1966 Society The 1966 Society was established in recognition of those who pledge a legacy, taking its name from the year in which the University received its Royal Charter. It can unlock funding from other sources, provide a platform upon which to build, or give an invaluable boost to a burgeoning research project. It is a key priority to make sure that your gift makes the biggest impact possible, regardless of its size. A sustainable gift from its outset and throughout his professional career; it is fitting that his legacy is helping to ensure its future success. Two years ago Roger Whorrod (BSc Electrical Engineering 1965, MSc Electrical Engineering 1970) and his wife Sue donated a gift worth £1 million to the University’s Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies. This gift has acted as a springboard for the Centre’s expansion and development. The University is part of a £5 million collaborative project to boost solar power research and central to Bath’s efforts is Dr Aron Walsh, the first Whorrod Fellow. It has also been announced that Bath is part of a £3.5 million SUPERGEN research hub to accelerate the deployment of sustainable bioenergy. An eye to the future The Vice-Chancellor’s Strategic Endowment Fund was established thanks to a generous legacy from James Nisbet (Honorary DSc 1985), and will provide income for special projects around the University for years to come. Last year the Fund was used to champion a successful exchange programme with Shandong University (SDU), one of China’s most prestigious 16 Unlocking potential institutions. The Endowment Fund was once again used to support the partnership this year, providing research scholarships for four exceptional SDU pharmacy students to come to study here. Two Bath students, Guy Barkley (Aerospace Engineering 2010-15) and Joe Peissel (Economics 2011-15), were also awarded an Alumni Fund grant to take part in a summer school at SDU. A £5,000 grant from the Alumni Fund to the University of Bath Boat Club has unlocked over £22,000 from other external sources, allowing them to build upon recent successes and go ahead with an exciting new University Rowing Programme. The programme will mean updating the fleet and employing a part-time coach, putting the Club on an equal footing with its competitors. It will also allow for an increase in the number of members that can be catered for – the club has doubled in size to almost 200 within five years, and the additional funding will allow the club to continue this trend. This final grant plugged the gap, The provision of philanthropic funds to support the partnership acts as a show of commitment, cementing our existing links with Shandong and opening doors for further collaboration. With China’s growing presence on the global stage, supporting projects like this can reap benefits for the University in the future. James Nisbet was involved in the construction of the University Bath’s Boat Club in training Professor Xu Xianming, SDU President, visited the University last year to discuss the partnership, which includes collaborative research, teaching and student exchanges. Donor Report 2012 delivering the vital financial commitment required to ensure that this programme will go ahead. Driving research forward The ground-breaking research carried out into intelligent burns dressings in the Department of Chemistry will be given a new lease of life following two generous donations to the cause. A gift from the Annett Charitable Trust will allow for the recruitment of a new PhD student to the team, and the James Tudor Foundation has provided funds to help employ a Research Nurse. The project, led by Dr Toby Jenkins in conjunction with the Children’s Burns Centre at Frenchay Hospital, aims to develop a ‘smart’ dressing enabling doctors to both detect and treat infection without removing expensive and healing dressings, reducing scarring and potentially saving the lives of young burns victims. The additional personnel will undoubtedly make an enormous contribution to this revolution in burns care. The Annett Charitable Trust has also funded a PhD research student to carry out work within the Department of Biology & Biochemistry, in conjunction with the Royal United Hospital, making advances in the treatment of prostate cancer. Extra funding to these established research projects, linking our excellence in scientific research with local hospitals, allows us to play our part in addressing many of the complex health challenges facing us today. The Alumni Fund is also taking a role. Your gifts are providing a boost for health research projects across the University, supporting equipment for artificial knee testing at the Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics, imaging technology for cancer research projects, and pioneering studies in stem cell research. Donor news Two important developments have had a positive effect on your donations to Bath, no matter how large or small they may be. A wider variety of initiatives are now eligible for support from the Alumni Fund, broadening the impact of your gifts to help more students, more departments and more projects. Find out more about the Alumni Fund on page 28. After a successful campaign, we celebrated the decision by Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne to abandon his plans to cap income tax relief on charitable donations. A particular mention is due to two couples who have made an outstanding contribution to the University over the years, the Ropers and the Whorrods, who spoke out to the local and national press to explain how the cap would present barriers to philanthropy. Opportunities to broaden horizons, gain invaluable skills for a professional career and take part in wideranging extracurricular activities are all part and parcel of studying here, and are what makes a Bath graduate stand out from the crowd in an increasingly competitive job market – thank you for giving our students the Bath Advantage. Enter the Dragons’ Den up some money to make it a reality was what really made the difference.” Bath’s most talented student entrepreneurs have had an extraordinary opportunity this year. Dr Richard Palmer (BSc Applied Biology 1973) and Hubert Velge (MSc Business Administration 1984) have donated a start-up fund, allocated to the best up-and-coming businesses following a series of BBC One Dragons’ Den-inspired competitions here on campus. Students first produced a minute-long video explaining their business idea. The best then went through to pitch for a start-up fund live in front of the alumni Dragons. Andy Brown (MEng Aerospace Engineering 2012) stole the show in the first round of the competition, securing a £2,000 investment to develop his free publication, The Underground Book Club, and is now working full-time on the business. He has since appeared on Sky 1’s television series The Angel, gaining a further £100,000 business investment from John Caudwell, founder of Phones 4u – an astonishing achievement for the young entrepreneur. The publication, which showcases upcoming books to London commuters, is becoming an increasingly familiar sight at train stations – look out for issue four coming soon. Andy said: “The money awarded to me was invaluable. Without it my idea would have been consigned to the pile of fantastic ideas had by students across the country all the time, but abandoned usually for financial reasons. And it wasn’t just the money; that someone else believed in me enough to put 18 On offer in the Den is more than financial support. Both Richard and Hubert impart valuable advice and encouragement to the burgeoning entrepreneurs, and have been instrumental in developing the new businesses. Ollie Marshall (Computer Information Systems 2010-14) and Amy Hunter (Business Administration 2011-15) first entered the Den in December 2011 to pitch for funding to develop GoTag, a social events platform which allows people to discover and recommend events, and purchase tickets. Whilst the idea had potential, it was in need of refinement; the duo were awarded a grant of £500 to be used to test the feasibility of their idea. After researching their target market and redefining their product, the team were awarded £4,000 to develop the mobile app; and put them a step ahead of their competitors. Amy said: “Pitching for the Dragons was extremely helpful as it is good to hear the opinion of an independent outsider and get some honest feedback. It is great for us to receive funding not only for our product growth but also as practice for when we have to raise more money from investors.” Hubert said: “I am glad to be part of the University’s effort in promoting entrepreneurship among its students. I believe that in the increasingly challenging job environment these skills will be invaluable.” Amy and Ollie received investment for their business, GoTag Donor Report 2012 “The Den is a truly remarkable, innovative event and I am very grateful to our Dragons who have made it possible.” Sincere thanks are due to both Richard and Hubert for pioneering this distinctive competition. Siobáin Hone, Enterprise Education Manager, said: “What distinguishes this event from other student entrepreneurship activities is that the participants not only have the opportunity to gain a financial boost for their fledgling enterprises, but also benefit from invaluable real-world business advice from some of our most successful alumni on how to take their ideas forward. “The Den is a truly remarkable, innovative event and I am very grateful to our Dragons who have made it possible. I have every hope that it will be a regular feature in the student calendar here at Bath.” Thanks to an Alumni Fund grant, an intern will be recruited to support the organisation and implementation of the Dragons’ Den and other entrepreneurship activities for the coming year. The skills gained through participating in such activities are invaluable to students. We are delighted that alumni gifts are affording our students every opportunity to succeed here at Bath. Key resources Bath’s research-led teaching is constantly advancing. Our wealth of library resources must reflect its fastpaced nature, and must continually evolve to keep up with modern developments. This year, for the first time electronic downloads of library resources have exceeded use of book and paper reference resources. Contributions to the Parents and Friends Library Enhancement Fund of more than £12,000 in the last year will enable us to exceed these needs, maximising our students’ potential to reach the highest academic standards. 1992 Miss Nicola Bellingham Mr Steven Bird Dr Yvonne Brown Mr Chris Campkin Dr Paul Crook Mr Jonathan Crowe Dr Nic Doye Mr Jeremy Fonseca Mr Ian Gallagher Mr Donald Haddock Jr Dr Elizabeth Harper Mr Siôn Lutley Mrs Joanne Minion Mr David Nottingham Dr Robin Oakley Dr Robert Oddy Mr Dave Smith Mr David Westcott Mr Robert Wise Mr Michael Wrigley An Anonymous Donor Mr William Lycett Mr Louis MacDonald Mr James Macfarlane Mr Robin Middleton Mr Simon Muderack Miss Anne O’Brien Mr Alan Odeku Mr Piaw Wah Ong Mr Rajender Raval Miss Caroline Rawson Mr Richard Rutter Mrs Heidi Trencher Mr Garth Way Six Anonymous Donors 1993 Dr Abdul Basit Mr Paul Brown Mrs Julie Codling Mr Morten Damm & Mrs Mette Damm Miss Ali Harris Dr Paul Hayden Mr Andy Howard Mr Tony James Mr John Kinson Dr Dethard Lampe Mr Andrew Lawley & Dr Wendy Lawley Mr Colin le Duc Mr Peter Lord Mr Lloyd Mitchell Mr Zoltan Rikker Mrs Rachael Roberts Mr Shane Sullivan Mr Mark Tomblin Mr John Warman Mr Andy Watkins & Mrs Sarah Watkins Mr Richard West Mrs Libby Whitethread Mr Iain Wilson An Anonymous Donor 1995 Mr Mark Acres Dr Mehdi Asghari Mr Michael Bailey Mr Jason Blight Mrs Victoria Bowes Mr Jonathan Carpanini & Miss Amanda Shepherd Miss Kim Chow Mr Garrett Cotter Mr Timothy Cranfield Mr Ian Crowe Ms Tamara Daly Miss Vicky Edwards Mrs Claire Fitzgerald Mr Trevor Ford Mrs Vicky Gibson Mrs Elizabeth Hall Mrs Suzanne Hart Mr Stephen Hinley Mr Richard Lander Mr Philip McComish & Mrs Vicki McComish Dr Brian Nicholson Mrs Pam Pennefather Mr Jason Pitchford-Todd Miss Sue Ryan Mrs Karen Sheppard Mr Jonathan Sleightholme Mr Matthew Smith Mr Tim Spicer Mr David Trice Mr Kritsda Udyanin Mr Richard Watson & Mrs Emma Watson Two Anonymous Donors 1994 Mr David Atterbury & Mrs Jane Atterbury Mr Lee Boyton Ms Jo Bridger Mr Quentin Brook Mr Steve Cast Mr John Cotton Mr Robert Dickson Mr Emmanuel Dray Mrs Milica Gay & Mr Daniel Gay Miss Jennifer Harvey Dr Neil Havard Mr Alan Holliman Mr Carlos Ibañez de Motta Mr Trevor Jefferies 1996 The Reverend Marcus Bagg Mr Matthew Box Miss Karen Hancock Mr Henrik Harmer Mrs Jill Hay Mr John Jeffries Mrs Anna Lawler Mr Kwok-Fai Lo Dr Owen Lyne Ms Heather Mason Dr Richard Pannett Mrs Caroline Pope Mr Mike Powis Mrs Victoria Price Miss Karin Ridgers Mr Bruce Rochester “I give as a way of saying thank you to the University for the education and opportunities it provided me with, and to enable the students of the future to have similar or even better experiences.” Terry Astridge (BSc Mathematics 2007), Alumni Fund Donor The Bath Advantage Philanthropic support has made a wealth of opportunities for personal and professional development available to students – both on campus and beyond. students had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to mix with peers and academics from universities all over the world, share experiences and discuss research interests. Bridging the gap Two-thirds of Bath students undertake a professional placement, and it is this hands-on experience that sets them apart from the crowd. For those who have highly-specialised research interests, it is possible for them to spend time at a distant university or in a faraway country in order to gain a unique perspective on their chosen subject. The Alumni Fund helps to overcome financial barriers to enable them to accept these opportunities, bridging the gap to make the most remarkable placements a reality. Richard Bieda (Wellbeing & Human Development 2011-12) worked with The Craig Bellamy Foundation, which runs Sierra Leone’s only non-profit professional football academy, offering underprivileged children the chance to reach their true potential through sport Mr Christophe Roesner Mr James Simpson Mr Dave Williams Mr Wilson Wong Five Anonymous Donors and education. Richard played a key role as a wellbeing researcher and health advisor, taking the lead in redesigning procedures for managing injuries and illnesses – essential in a country where local health care provision is poor. Matt Taylor and Daniel Eagles (both Coach Education & Sports Development 2009-13) undertook year-long placements working as researchers in the field of sports psychology at Victoria University, Melbourne. They had a unique opportunity to work alongside the psychologist for Collingwood Football Club, analysing and helping to select young AFL players. Matt and Daniel said: “Unless we were in Melbourne, we would not have had the opportunity to be so heavily involved in this sport, as well as broaden our understanding of psychology. For us, this was ‘real’ practice, and is what we enjoyed the most! We would like to thank the Alumni Fund very much for helping us have an amazing year abroad.” Carie Martin (MPharm Pharmacy 2012) spent four months at Curtin University, Perth, conducting practical pharmacy research into the cost of wastage which, if applied to the UK, could provide substantial savings for the NHS. Beyond significant gains in professional experience, Carie developed personally during her placement. She said: “This placement has shown me that I have received more than just a degree from Bath. I have received life experience that puts me further ahead in the world of success.” Charlie Brazil (Psychology 2009-13) secured a placement within the Child Development House at Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand. There she studied the impact of using methadone during pregnancy and the effects of premature birth, research that is close to her heart and invaluable for her dissertation, which focuses on the developmental effects of babies born early. She said: “I have learned that leaving your comfort zone and starting a new life in a different country is a wonderful experience. It taught me that I can survive and be happy regardless of where I am or who I am with. “This experience has been life-changing, and I would like to say a big thank you to all the individuals who have helped to fund it.” Alumni Fund placements help connect exceptionally committed students to unique chances for development, both professional and personal. It is an ambition of the University, as part of a strategic £100 million investment in our campus, to give space for this talent to grow. We hope that significant philanthropic support will help us to see this ambition realised; and that in 2014 we will see a new arrival on campus – a Centre for the Arts. Run by the Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts (ICIA), the Centre will give students the resources they need. Playing in a band, dancing in a group or singing in a choir demands good discipline, communication skills and collaboration. Our aim is to make as much of our artistic credentials as our sporting, to ‘square the circle’, and create the rounded graduate that today’s employers prize. The Centre will not only cater for the needs of students, but also staff and the community, providing a public programme of classes, workshops, performances and exhibitions. Our ambition cannot be achieved without the support of alumni and friends, and opportunities will be available for you to become a part of it, to share our pride in what will be a valuable addition to life on campus. The Alumni Fund has long supported the arts at Bath. Relatively little funding goes a long way to making a big difference to the quality and professionalism of productions and creations. In May 2010, BUSMS, the Student Musicals Society, received £1,000 from the Alumni Fund to buy an electric drum kit – it has been used in every single performance since. Cara Ballingall (BSc Natural Sciences 2012) and Brian Murray (Physics 2010-14), BUSMS, said: “We really appreciate the huge help the Alumni Fund has given us, and our performers and audiences really benefit from it… and will do for many years to come.” This year has been no different, with grants awarded to support artistic activity across campus. Visual art will become a much more familiar sight with pieces popping up in the new Students’ Union and around the University following funding for frames, canvasses and display materials. Grants have been made to student groups that will have a ripple effect across campus. The Student Media group will now be able to purchase a live events package, and Backstage Technical Services will have the kit to manage video projection and effects during events, making the production and broadcasting of shows and performances even better. It is thanks to our alumni donors that arts on campus are so well provided for, giving students the chance to constantly develop their skills. We look forward to watching, listening to and looking at the impression these grants have made as we gear up for the arrival of the new Centre for the Arts. We will be seeking gifts to support the Centre – look out for reports on its progress next year. © Tim Harris 22 Donor Report 2012 “We really appreciate the huge help the Alumni Fund has given us, and our performers and audiences really benefit from it… and will do for many years to come.” Equipped to perform Much research has been conducted into the positive effects of exercise on academic performance – but above all sports are to be enjoyed and can be a welcome relief from intensive studying! Donations to the Alumni Fund have meant that yet more sports societies have been given grants to purchase essential equipment and resources. Gifts mean that many sports societies can renew and repair equipment, yet in some instances they allow Bath teams to really raise the bar. In previous years the women’s basketball team have had to compete wearing incomplete, mismatched kits, but this year they began the season with a brand new set, thanks to your donations. Could it have been more than a coincidence that the team had an outstanding season, winning eight out of 10 matches, which resulted in the team’s promotion? The team now look as professional as they play, and will proudly represent the University for years to come. skill and control, and is used at higher level competitions. The availability of this equipment within the club will not only be of great benefit to those who compete at that level, but will raise the standard of the club’s members as a whole. Our students dominate the region when it comes to sport, triumphing at the inaugural ‘Varsity – Best of the South West’, the largest student sporting event in the history of the University. After graduating, they remain a part of this community. While many miles may separate our alumni they will always have Bath in common. This year your gifts, teamed with the commitment of individuals, have worked hard to entrench this sense of community, fostering links from day one and enabling students to help each other during their time here. Gifts of time are fundamental, helping set recent graduates on the right path, keeping the community alive thousands of miles away from Bath – and ensuring that this network will only strengthen for the thousands of graduates of the future. From day one Starting university can be a daunting experience for many, yet this year a grant from the Alumni Fund enabled the Students’ Union to provide Freshers’ Week t-shirts to newcomers to welcome them to life on campus. The t-shirts, coloured differently according to the different halls of residence, were given to all new undergraduate students, ensuring that newcomers straight away felt both part of their residence and part of the University. Throughout the year the shirts have encouraged engagement in campus activities, intramural competitions and events – and have helped make campus a home. 24 It’s the small things… They have tight budgets but grand ideas – match a student’s time and enthusiasm with a small amount of funding and they can go a long way to impact upon, and improve, campus life. Thanks to the Alumni Fund, this year tickets sales to student-run events and performances, and participation in surveys and campaigns, are on the up. The Fund provided an iPad for the Students’ Union allowing for instant and direct engagement with campus goingson, as students can purchase tickets, fill in questionnaires and record feedback on the spot. This has been a huge benefit to students and sabbatical officers, and the iPad will continue to be a valuable resource. The Alumni Fund has provided a new bed for Nightline, the confidential listening and information telephone service run for students by students. This has allowed the service to run seven nights a week during exams and has enabled more volunteers to be trained. “The grant has made an enormous difference to Nightline’s operations. Without grants like this one, and others in the past from the Alumni Fund, it would be difficult for Nightline to keep operating at all.” Nightline volunteer As part of the Alumni Relations AlumNite programme, recent graduates have been invited to attend informal networking evenings in the city where Alumni Volunteers give up their evening to check CVs, give advice and point fellow alumni in the right direction. Their support has undoubtedly had a great impact. URB at the bus stop Campus’ award-winning radio station URB now brings a smile to even more faces thanks to wireless broadcasting at the University Bus Stop. An Alumni Fund grant allowed the station to purchase and install the technology and it has proven to be a big hit – queuing for the bus into town has been transformed and it has been great to see students miming along. The station holds many accolades including bronze at the National Student Radio Awards; the extra venue on its playlist gives the dedicated presenters a well-deserved boost and a wider audience. As recently overheard at the bus stop, ‘how nice is it to hear your favourite song after a bit of a rubbish day to cheer you up?’ – it’s the small things that make a difference! Moving up the ladder Many recently-graduated alumni take the plunge and head to London, yet in an increasingly competitive job market, getting that initial interview or moving up the career ladder can be tough. But within the alumni community, help is at hand. Daniaal Awais-Dean (BSc Economics 2010) said: “I went along to the AlumNite expecting to get a few tips on my CV, but I didn’t expect that it would provide me with such a great opportunity to get valuable advice from those in my industry who are higher up the career ladder than me. It was a fantastic chance to network, and I made some great contacts who I have since kept in touch with and who have given me some invaluable guidance on getting to where I want to be.” We are very grateful to alumni who have offered one-to-one mentoring to students or recent graduates. Sue Ryan (BSc Sociology 1972), former managing editor of the Daily Telegraph, was put in touch with Andy Brown and helped get his publication off the ground – see page 18 for details. Forums for HR and Marketing professionals are also in place and meetings, often combining senior practitioners, more recent graduates and current students, provide a great platform to share best practice and impart expertise. Many thanks are due to our Alumni Volunteers and mentors for their dedication to the community, helping others in true Bath spirit. The University is still a part of me, and I want to continue, in a small way, to be part of it!” Peter Arnold (BSc Business Administration 1979), Alumni Fund Donor Donor Report 2012 Building your community Wherever your degree takes you Support from around the world Our international volunteers are the University’s ambassadors overseas. For current students returning home, placement students abroad or alumni relocating for work, they are your welcome party. For the University, they make sure that Bath’s interests abroad are promoted and keep the community alive from hundreds, or even thousands, of miles away. Our international volunteers are also key to spreading the word about the impact of making a philanthropic donation to the University, and are helping to make it even easier for our supporters to make gifts to the University. One such volunteer is Rosanna Lau (MBA 2002), who gives up her time to provide one-to-one careers advice to current students and recent graduates. She is well placed to help, drawing on her expertise as President and CEO of China Minds Ltd, a consultancy that bridges opportunities between UK and Chinese markets and businesses. She is also instrumental in fostering educational, business and cultural links between Bath and the Jiangxi Province of China, having played an important role in a delegation from Bath and North East Somerset Council’s visit to China and the subsequent return visit to develop a long-term and mutually beneficial relationship. Rosanna said: “Getting a Bath MBA was one of the best decisions I have made so far. To show my appreciation for what the University of Bath has done for me, I will always be prepared to support my School, alumni, or anyone who is considering studying at Bath, in any way I can, at any time.” 26 The University of Bath Foundation Ltd, with the help of the New York Chapter, helps foster connections between Bath and the 1,600 alumni in the USA. It also provides a tax-efficient vehicle for donations, which ensures that gifts, both small and large, can be used to their fullest. The Foundation has been providing scholarships, created by collective donations, for outstanding students from the USA to further their studies here at Bath for several years, and this year has been no exception – Amanda Goehring (Interpreting & Translating 2011-13) and Jill Lewis (Engineering Design 2011-13) were this year’s scholarship recipients. Part of the Lions of Bath 2010, a public art event, the Porcelion celebrates links between Bath and the Jiangxi Province Donor Report 2012 “Studying here has given me a head-start towards leadership in industry and I cannot wait to see where life takes me upon completing my studies.” Jill Lewis, University of Bath Foundation Ltd Scholar We are lucky to have such outstanding individuals representing the University, making sure that in spite of physical distance, Bath is never far away. For building and widening the alumni community, for making a considerable impact, thank you to all of our international volunteers and donors. Engaging the wider community in research Our international alumni are helping us to foster links with the local community through support for our research. One such research project working with local children was made possible by New York based alumnus Mike Ashworth (BSc Economics with Computing & Statistics 1986). His support has enabled Laura Benton, a current Computer Science PhD student and Ashworth Scholar, to carry out pioneering research into using technology to engage and inspire children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). She has developed software to help children with autism learn maths and science. This project is special as the software has been created using participatory design; children with autism made decisions on the design and functionality of the software throughout all stages of development. “I will always be prepared to support alumni, or anyone who is considering studying at Bath, in any way I can, at any time.” Rosanna Lau, Alumni Volunteer Beyond the limit: Alumni Fund in space Beyond campus, beyond the UK and beyond even our international network, your gifts will help the University of Bath make an impression in space. The Alumni Fund has enabled a Cube Satellite chassis and other equipment to be purchased, allowing third year undergraduates in the Faculty of Engineering to complete a business design project. The students have designed spaceborne GPS jamming detectors, giving them valuable hands-on experience of satellite design and development and a direct advantage when they seek jobs in the space industry, a major growth sector for the UK economy. The equipment will also be used for PhD student Talini Pinto Jayawardena’s project, a system to measure the Earth’s plasmasphere, which will be launched into space; an indication that the opportunities created by the Alumni Fund are truly limitless! Julian Rose, from the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, said: “A big thank you from all of us involved in the project goes to the Alumni Fund, without which this exciting CubeSat project would not have been possible.” 2010 Mr Philip Aldwinckle Mr Andrew Bellingham Mr Saagar Bhavsar Mr David Burge Miss Monica Cheng Mr Paul Clarke Mr Elliot Davis Mr Benjamin Deavin Ms Isabelle Dunnett Mr Alex Franks Miss Kate Gray Miss Daria Gromyko Mr Iain Hodgson Mrs Sobia Iqbal Miss Renata Kashiwaya Mendes Pinheiro Mr Qamar Khan Mr Dominic Lacey Mr James Lam Miss Elizabeth Lancashire Mr Andrew MacPherson Miss Laura Orme Mr Mark Parkinson Mr Thomas Parsons Mr Tapesh Patel Ms Heather Pavlou Mr Martin Phillips Miss Charli Reynolds Mr Steve Russell Mr Joseph Samuel Miss Hollie Sands Mr Peter Scull Mr Matthew Sprague Mr Hugo Staton Mr Ed Traore Mr Nicholas Tyrrell Mr George Watkinson-Yull Miss Natasha Watson & Mr Matthew Canning Mr Cho Yip Six Anonymous Donors 2011 Miss Grace Ayre Miss Amy Bowden Mr Simon Bristow Miss Fiona Burgess Mr Iain Carson Miss Victoria Cole Miss Charlotte Cornforth Mr Alexander Devonald Mr Paul Ghosh Mr Rory Hawkins Mr Oliver Horncastle Miss Lydia Jones Mr Matthew Judge Miss Katherine Marland Miss Laura McCracken Mr Simon Murgatroyd Miss Tess Newman Mr Max Veglio Mr Paul Wallace Two Anonymous Donors Nine Other Donors✢ 2012 Miss Ameera Ali Miss Aisaaca Annor Miss Kate Harper Mr Zahir Kasmani Mr Samuel Lawes Miss Regina Medeiros Arnold Miss Geraldine Munn-Mace Miss Lucy Nelson Mr Howard Nicholson Mr Craig Perl Miss Corinne Shaw Miss Rebecca Steer Miss Hannah Wright An Anonymous Donor 35 Other Donors✢ 2013 Miss Susan Liu Mr William Pike 42 Other Donors✢ 2014 Miss Kirsten Cherry Mr Martin Crowe Miss Olivia Harris Mr Benjamin Hooper Miss Abigail Irvin Miss Chelsea Lau Miss Rachael Moulton Mr Jack Rhodes 391 Other Donors✢ 2015 Mr Thomas Alderton Mr James Benson-King Miss Emily Mceachern Mr Benjamin Paine Mr Joseph Peissel 1,003 Other Donors✢ 2016 Mr Alexander Joseph 117 Other Donors✢ Parents Colonel Svein Andersen Mr I V Anirudhan Mr Edward C N Archer Ms Jan Barker Mrs Julie Bawn & Mr Paul Bawn Mr Roger Birkett & Mrs Joy Birkett Miss Julia Carter Mrs Andrea Carter & Mr Matthew Carter Mrs Jane Castle Mr Panayiotis Christoforou Mr Gilbert Csécs & Mrs Alison Csécs Mr John Darrell & Mrs Stacey Darrell Mr Niels De Coninck-Smith Mr Graham De Zille “I am now living and working in the US and see the significant help that schools get from former students. It is more than a financial commitment; as an alumni donor you raise your hand to be counted amongst those who believe in the importance of scholarships for the most talented young people, grants for special projects and exceptional opportunities for committed students. This show of hands is equally important to those who benefit from your support, and is fundamental to what can be achieved today and in the years to come. The collective power of gifts made to the Alumni Fund makes special projects and grants for placements possible – you can find examples on previous pages. Yet importantly, it also provides scholarships, enabling gifted students who face financial or other barriers to make the most of their university experience. They are themselves the bestplaced to explain what a difference this has made. It’s your call Many of you will have been contacted by one of our telethon callers who, twice a year, get in touch with thousands of alumni. For the students – often donors themselves – this is not only an opportunity to help in the efforts to improve the University but also a rewarding experience, talking to those who have studied here in previous years. Joe Peissel (Economics 2011-15), Alumni Fund Scholar and telethon caller said: “After being lucky enough to receive a scholarship, the telethon provided me with an opportunity to give something back to the Alumni Fund. We also get to speak to a huge variety of interesting people from all different backgrounds, and it’s this, as well as being part of a team, that makes the telethon so enjoyable.” On behalf of the telethon team – thank you. “I would like to thank all the donors who contribute to the Alumni Fund. I hope that you realise just how much of a positive impact your support, both financially and mentally, has on students.” Hayley Davies (BSc Physics 2012, Management 2012-13), Alumni Fund Scholar “I feel like I owe it to my sponsors to really try my hardest, even when the work can be frustrating and feel overwhelming. I’d like to thank the alumni donors very much for their excellent contribution, and let them know that they are making a real difference to those at Bath who really need it.” Jules Farrow (Computer Science 2011-15), Alumni Fund Scholar from the 2011-12 telethon callers 28 Donor Report 2012 For making sure that your interests are represented, thank you to alumni Mary Cutbill (BSc Business Administration 1988), Joy Fraser (BSc Horticulture 1973), David Wing (BSc Economics 1983) and Steve Wood (BSc Mathematics 1972), who served on the Alumni Fund decision-making panel last year – your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. Token of appreciation Even the most modest of gifts, especially when made regularly over a long period, can make a huge impact. We are celebrating those generous donors who have supported the University regularly over the last 10 years, and will be presenting them with a limited edition watercolour print of the campus as a way of expressing our immense gratitude. The exclusive artwork has been commissioned from recent graduate Philip Buckingham (BSc Architecture 2012), an exciting young artist who has exhibited his pieces in Bath and London. Philip was an Alumni Fund Scholar, and his success is in part testament to what our promising students are able to achieve with the support of the University’s alumni community. Philip said: “I have really enjoyed this commission, partly because it is a way for me to offer something back to the University that has given me so much over the past four years. I am very grateful to the alumni too – without their generosity I would not have been able to study here, and enjoy so many opportunities during my degree.” We cannot emphasise enough how important this long-term generosity is to us, so thank you. “The phone calls from the telethon team take me back to my happy days in Bath, and I am glad to be able to help another student cope better with their time at University.” Bob Simpson (BSc Physics with Physical Electronics 1979) Mr David Donner Ms Rachel Downing Mr Matassim Duraman Mr Dale Durrans Mr Philip Edwards & Mrs Karen Edwards Mr Keith Evans & Mrs Clare Evans Mrs Deborah Fiveash Mr H M Fletcher Mr & Mrs Flight Mr J Fry & Mrs B Fry Mrs Susan Gaw & Mr Nick Gaw Mrs Caroline Godfrey Mr Peter Green & Mrs Sue Green Mr L B Grover & Mrs K V Grover Mr Ian Hamilton-Shaw Mrs M C Harding & Mr S Harding Mr Joseph Hegarty & Mrs Helen Hegarty Mr J G Hickey Mr David Hodges Mr Roger Hornby Mr Martyn Isaac & Mrs Sue Isaac Mrs Janet Isbell Mr Robert Jansen Mr R N Jobanputra & Mrs M D Jobanputra Mrs Alyson Jones Mr & Mrs S C Joyce Mr Simon Kidner Mr Ricardo Laiseca Mr & Mrs C I Lambert Mr Robert Law The Lay Family The Lekkas Family Mr Philip Lines & Mrs Linda Lines Mr Francis H C Lo Mrs Cynthia Lunson Dr R Majer & Mrs A Majer Mrs M Malatesta Mr & Mrs McGlasson Mrs Linda McLundie & Mr Hugh McLundie Mr Ken Newell & Mrs Lynne Newell Mr David Nunn Mrs Lynda Nutting Mrs Clare Oakley Mr Miguel Paredes & Ms Lola Cimadevilla Mr Avinash Patole Mrs Sarah Perry Mrs Jackie Philpott Mrs Lorrae Playdon Mrs Myroulla Podina Mr Richard Pollard Mrs Trish Pollok & Mr Martin Pollok Mr Peter Portman & Mrs Elaine Portman Ms Jennifer Pottinger Mrs Anne Power Mrs Christina Pratt Mr Satish Rama Mr Patrick Ravillard Mr Tony Renton Mr & Mrs G Rhodes Ms Louise Robinson Mr John Salter Mr & Mrs P J Saxby Mr Bruce Shepherd Mr & Mrs Siganporia Mr Shaun Simpson Mr Sunden-Cullberg Mrs D Upshon Mr Laxman Varsani Mrs Julie Vickers & Mr Mark Vickers Mr Niels Vig & Ms Helen Ryan Mrs Vandana Vithlani & Mr J Vithlani Mrs Susan Wallis & Mr David Wallis Mr & Mrs W Watt Mr Joachim Weber & Mrs Anja Weber Mrs Asa Wersäll Mrs Elizabeth Whincop Mr David Wiggins Mrs Susan Willis & Mr Michael Willis Mr & Mrs N G Winchcombe Mr Eugene Witcombe Mr Siu For Wong Mr Christopher Wood & Mrs Carolyn Wood Mr M Woodfield & Mrs P Woodfield Mr James Woodrow & Mrs Zony Woodrow Mr George Wrigley Mrs Wung Mr Jonathan Yonge & Mrs Janet Yonge Mrs Eszter Zaborszky Ms Zhang Xiao Yu 28 Anonymous Donors Other Friends Mrs Linda Alldridge Mrs Chris Andrews Mrs Pamela Batterham Mrs Kim Bliss Mrs Naomi Box Dr Graham Brown Ms Kirsten Buckley Professor Peter Clegg Mr Thom Crawley Dr Michael Froggatt Mr H Hammouda Professor Helen Haste Mr Graham Hill & Mrs Sheila Hill Mrs Stephanie Lear Mr Gavin Maggs Mrs Marian McNeir Mr Andrew Monk Miss Philippa Neaverson Dr Beatrice Purser-Hallard Mrs Yvonne Quayle Mr Ron Reynolds Mrs Hiroko Sherwin & Mr Jim Sherwin “To this day I am still overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the contributors to the Alumni Fund.” Charlotte Cook (Mechanical Engineering 2009-14), Alumni Fund Scholar Donor Report 2012 Facts and statistics The year in numbers Where is the money coming from?
