On the calendar above, dates in red indicate that an event is occurring
on a different date than originally published. We thank you for your
patience and flexibility as make adjustments in response to the eleven
snow/ice days that we have had in December and February!
We are an intentionally small, choice school where
, community, leadership, and creativity flourish.
“SNOW DAY”
In the winter it’s every kids dream,
As snowflakes begin to appear,
That suddenly there’ll be a blizzard,
And they’ll cancel school for the year.
Though most kids are willing to settle,
And I am inclined to agree,
They could merely close school for one day –
One day off would be just fine with me.
A day free from all forms of homework,
A day without science or math,
When you leave all your schoolbooks at home –
And run out the door with a laugh.
A day full of sledding and cocoa,
And snowmen who wear dad’s old clothes,
No writing out boring equations
After lunch when you’d rather just doze.
A snow day’s a day meant for lounging,
Where idleness isn’t condemned,
A day where you sleep in till lunchtime,
A day that you don’t want to end.
Monday, February 6
And if you are truly quite lucky,
The snow will continue its flight,
And you’ll spend the afternoon hoping
The next day will be just as white.
--Barbara Vance
Ever wonder what teachers do on snow days?
Well, Mr. Ritchie goes to school anyway so he can take pictures!
Principal’s Message:
A Note From Mrs. Hawes...
Dear Students and Families,
Are the days of snow and ice behind us? We sure hope so. I love snow, and get as excited as
my daughters do when I wake up in the morning to see the ground covered in snow. That
being said, however, I feel satisfied for several years now. Our district leaders are working
this week with representatives from the different unions to determine our new adjusted
schedule for this trimester and the final day of school. As soon as the decision is made, we
will share the information with all of you.
The month of February is very full with assemblies, guests, senior project presentations, and
a holiday...despite there being only 8 days in the month! Our first assembly takes us over to
Ferndale High School to join our peers to learn from the White Hatter. The parent/family
opportunity to learn technology safety tips from him is this evening, February 13. Please
look for more information in our newsletter, as well as the district website. Our guests at
school include Emily and Daniel from the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center. They are
working with students to teach strategies for dealing with conflict. Emily and Daniel will also
host a special community meeting on February 28. Other guests are community members
who are serving as panelists for our senior Community Project presentations. Thank you!
Please remember that this Friday (2/17) is a previously-scheduled early release day and next
Monday (2/20) is a federal holiday, Presidents’ Day. Take care, and enjoy the warmer days
and the return of routines to your week.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kim Hawes

WHS STUDENTS AND “THE WHITE HATTER”
On Monday, February 13, all Windward staff and students will attend a presentation called
“The White Hatter.” “The White Hatter” is about proactive safety education and training.
The presentation provides proactive internet and Social Media safety and digital literacy
training. Over a three-day span, all Ferndale middle and high school staff and students will
attend the presentation. This event will be held in the Ferndale High School Auditorium.
Traveling by school bus, we plan to leave WHS at 7:50 am and return by 9:45 am. Upon
returning to school, we will proceed with a schedule of shortened classes. It is especially
important that all students arrive to campus on time that morning.
Running Start students are reminded to take responsibility for checking
in with their WHS teachers to determine the impact on their schedule
and to make an individual plan. Parents/Guardians may attend the
evening presentation, held from 7:00-9:00 pm at the FHS Auditorium.

The Ferndale School District wants your
feedback as we consider future capital

how to best prioritize our facility needs.
Districts typically rely on taxpayer-provided
capital bonds or levies to construct and
maintain our schools. We know these are
big decisions, and we really appreciate your
feedback and recommendations as we plan
for Ferndale School District’s future.
If you are interested in helping us by serving
on a TASK FORCE, please call 360.383.9203 or

WE ARE LEARNERS
The Oral History Project is an integrated English and Social Studies service learning project in which
Windward students interview community members about their experiences during a specified era or in
connection to a specified theme and publish a book containing narratives, photographs, and reflections.
It is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun! This year’s topic is LOCAL GOVERNMENT. On January 19, we had
a very successful interview day. Thank you to the 15 community members who came in to share their
stories! Students are now busily writing and editing in the hopes of publishing their book in March.

games such as Super Smash

Sports. Although the night was
first postponed due to a snow
day and then unexpectedly cut
short by a power outage caused
by an accident on Northwest, a
good time was had by all!
As part of their Community Project, Windward seniors spend 30+ hours planning and carrying out a project
that serves or benefits the community in some way. In addition to completing the actual project, students
give a formal presentation and write a reflective essay in which they consider what they learned and how they
overcame challenges. Many students have recently experienced their ideas turning into reality!
Celine Cailteaux organized a food drive to benefit
the Ferndale Food Bank. The Windward staff and
Vulic Navigation donated the most food, so they
enjoyed their reward in late January: a delicious
lunch from StrEAT Food. Thank you to Celine for
seeing a community need , and thank you to the
staff and students who helped to meet that need!

MR. VULIC HONORED BY THE EVERGREEN STATE COLLEGE
Mr. Eddi Vulic, Windward math teacher, has received a Teacher Excellence
Award from The Evergreen State College. This award is designed to honor
teachers who have had a significant impact on their students. Incoming
students are asked to nominate the teacher who they feel had the most
impact on their education. Evergreen Provost Dr. Kenneth Tabbutt, shared
that Mr. Vulic was nominated by Rhiannon Ayley, WHS Class of 2016. The
phrases listed below are excerpts from Rhiannon’s letter:
“...one of those teachers who is always there for you…”
“...pleasant and enjoyable…”
“...very good at relating to his students…”
“...organized and oversaw all of our game nights…”
“...friendly, helpful, and willing to bend over backwards so students could
not only succeed but truly enjoy their learning experiences…”
We agree! Congratulations, Mr. Vulic! We are so proud of you!
All Windward students participate in Poetry Out
Loud, a contest that encourages the nation’s youth
to learn about great poetry through memorization
and recitation. This program is designed to help
students master public speaking skills, build selfconfidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
A big thank you to Mrs.
Diana Austin and her
Navigation class for
organizing this event!
Congratulations to senior EMMA VERTI, winner of
our school-wide competition! She recited “I Felt a
Funeral in My Brain” by Emily Dickinson and
“Carnival” by Rebecca Lindenberg. Sophomore

regional competition.
LEBITZ-BRADEN PLAYS AT SOLO AND ENSEMBLE
On January 28, freshman Thomas LebitzBraden participated in the San Juan Music
Educators Association’s Senior Solo and
Ensemble Contest, held at Bellingham
High School. Thomas, who has played the
viola for nine years, performed the 1st
movement of Beethoven’s “Concerto No.
3 in C minor.” He says, “I think I did pretty
good, but I haven't gotten my feedback
from them yet. I had to get up really early
in the morning because I played at 8:10
am.” Great job, Thomas!

SHE STARTED IT
A note from WHS Boosters:
This is a free event, and it would be wonderful for students of all ages to see
the film! The director of the film is also planning on attending.
Join The Foundry - Bellingham’s Makerspace and the Pickford Film Center for a film screening of SHE STARTED IT, a
new documentary film that follows five trailblazing young female entrepreneurs through their journeys of entrepreneurship. SHE STARTED IT gives a new face to the popular image of the tech entrepreneur: a female face. Following
five women over two years as they pitch VCs, build teams, bring products to market, fail and start again, SHE STARTED IT takes viewers on a global roller coaster ride from San Francisco to Mississippi, France, and Vietnam. Along
the way, it weaves in big-picture perspectives from women like investor Joanne Wilson; White House CTO Megan
Smith; GoldieBlox CEO Debbie Sterling; and Ruchi Sanghvi, the first female engineer at Facebook. Through intimate,
action-driven storytelling, SHE STARTED IT explores the cultural roots of female underrepresentation in entrepreneurship—including pervasive self-doubt, fear of failure, and risk aversion among young women. It exposes, too, the
structural realities women face as they become entrepreneurs, including lack of female role models and investors,
and the persistent dearth of venture capital funding made available to women -led companies.
