Reading
AKS: 48
AKS : 8,9,21,37,39,40,42,43,48
Spelling will focus on words that will
help students with their grammar and writing
skills. This nine weeks word study will include
learning to correctly spell words that can be
classified as homophones, antonyms, and
synonyms. Students will also learn to spell
words with special endings and spelling
patterns.
During the first nine weeks we will be
covering a variety of reading skills. These skills
include drawing conclusions, foreshadowing, and
identifying similarities and differences between
characters, events and themes in a story or
article. Students will also be encouraged to
clarify, illustrate and expand their responses to
literature. All of these skills will not only help with
students’ reading ability, but also their writing as
well. Please continue to read with your students
daily!
Grammar
AKS: 55, 56, 57, 61, 62
Students will focus on a variety of
grammar skills that will encourage them to
become better writers. This quarter will include
skills on understanding the relationship between
the subjects and verbs in sentences. As well as
how the verb in a sentence blends with the
predicate. Students will also be expected to
explain and distinguish between declarative,
imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory
sentences. Students will also gain lots of
experience with writing a variety of sentences
using conjunctions, commas, and other
punctuation marks.
Writing
AKS: 79. 80. 81. 82, 83
Writing during the first nine weeks will
emphasize students’ ability to engage readers
through narrative writing. Students will work to
complete personal and creative narrative writing
pieces. Students will be expected to use
engaging language that will capture a reader’s
attention through sensory details and
sophisticated vocabulary. They will also work to
establish a sequence, main idea and supporting
details to explain and describe setting, plot, and
conflict that may arise among characters in their
writing. Personal narrative writings will be
influenced by the students’ lives and experiences
that are significant to them. Creative narrative
writings will force students to step into the
imaginative realm, to show their creativity.

British colonial America. Through the study of
the early colonies, students will be able to
describe daily life and culture of people that
lived in all three colonial regions.
