New Store Expands Opportunities for Artisans
Celebrate with us
Join us for the grand
opening of our new
Ten Thousand Villages
store located at
#101- 323 17 Ave SW.
Saturday, May 31
10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
One of the best things about shopping at a Ten Thousand Villages store is that your
purchases can actually make a difference in the world. That’s why we’re so pleased to
announce the opening of our new store in the 17 Avenue shopping district, giving Calgarians
more places to shop fair trade.
This new store will also expand opportunities for global artisans, which is the core mission of
Ten Thousand Villages. “To fulfill this mission, all Ten Thousand Villages stores' staff and
volunteers work to increase sales and provide even more opportunities for employment for
these artisans,” says Charlene Baker, Board Chair of the Crowchild store.
Temporary store highlighted business potential
From October 2009 to January 2010, Ten Thousand Villages Crowchild opened a temporary
store on 17 Avenue SW for the fall and Christmas shopping season. Charlene Baker says
the experiment was such a success that the board decided to open a permanent store in the
area. Since then, it has been waiting for the right location that would offer walk-by traffic and
provide an opportunity to bring fair trade to a new area of the city.
“We’ve found the perfect space at #101-323 17th Ave SW,” says Charlene.

Artisan Story – Union of Peasants for Self-Development (UPAP)
UPAP represents about 160 skilled Tuareg artisans who make silver jewellery and
leatherworks. The artisans use income from craft production to supplement their
subsistence farming and other livelihoods. This additional income has helped them
build and equip schools, build wells, pay for medicine and make childbirth safer.
In 1993, young Tuareg craftspeople joined together to make and sell traditional
leather handicrafts and silver jewellery. For several years, some of the artisans
travelled to France, selling their wares from backpacks. As the group expanded, it
became a formal organization called UPAP in 1999. The group now has a store in
the Nigerian capital of Niamey, participates in local African fairs, and sells
handicrafts to fair trade organizations in France and North America.
Sharing the Tuareg culture
Ten Thousand Villages has purchased products from UPAP since 2002. Visit our
stores to see a full selection of beautiful silver Tuareg jewellery, including earrings,
bracelets and necklaces.

New Store Expands Opportunities for Artisans
The new 17 Avenue store is on one floor and has designated parking in the
front. The space has been renovated and painted and will be open for
business on May 15. The grand opening takes place on Saturday, May 31.
“The Crowchild store is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year,” says
Charlene Baker. “What better way to honour the volunteers who opened that
store than by opening another location and introducing a new group of
customers to the unique world of Ten Thousand Villages.”
Store manager Joyce Doran is passionate about the Ten Thousand Villages
mission and is excited about launching the new store. There are wonderful
volunteer opportunities available. If you’re interested, please contact Joyce
by phone at 403-719-9005, by email at [email protected] or drop by
the store.
